Osa Kaksikymmentäyhdeksän – Part Twenty-Nine: Outback Experience part 2

Priscilla the Queen of the Desert spot!

On the last day of the tour we visited King’s Canyon. Once again we had to get up before sunrise so that we can do the hike before the hottest time of the day (so pretty much from 9am onwards). Adam told us beforehand that the hike starts with a “heart attack hill” that apparently is pretty tough especially for older tourists who start the hike too late when it’s already 40C. However our group was mainly young fit people and we started at around 6am so we didn’t have any problems. I didn’t know much about King’s Canyon beforehand but it turned out to be maybe even more impressive than Uluru or Kata Tjuta (not that it’s necessary to compare them to each other). The landscape was just incredible. The hike took about 4 hours during which hundreds of pics were taken. Adam also showed us the exact point where they filmed some scenes for the Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (one of our favourite movies!). We took a rest stop at Eden’s Waterhole that was like an oasis in the middle of the desert. It’s one of the few places around with permanent water supply so it was also a sacred site for the local Aboriginals.
All good things must come to an end, after King’s Canyon we just had the long drive to Alice Springs ahead of us. We had a couch arranged there and as agreed, our host Derren picked us up from the tour bus.

Not. Scared. At. All.
Derren lives with his colleague Brad and two great big dogs. At the moment a German guy Michael is also temporarily living there and working in Derren’s company. We chilled out, Brad cooked us dinner and Derren gave us tips on what to do in Alice for the next couple of days. We wanted to really just take it easy as the Rock tour had been pretty intensive and it was nice to get a bit of rest. So we decided to just visit the Reptile Centre and then spend the rest of the day by a pool.
In the morning Derren gave us a ride to the Reptile Centre which was quite a small and humble place but still very interesting. There were lots of different snakes and lizards and even a saltwater crocodile – those are the larger and scarier ones. We learned a lot about the dangerous snakes (of the 20 most dangerous snakes in the world, 18 live in Australia) and what to do in case you get a bite (fingers crossed it’s not going to happen though!). The best part was that we got to handle different lizards and also hold a massive python (more accurately the python was holding me, pretty tightly actually). It was a great visit but as it’s not a big place, a couple of hours was well enough and then we were happy to head to the pool for the rest of the day. It was really hot so we wouldn’t have had much energy for anything more active than that.
Couchsurfing dinner party at Derren's

Wallabi near the telegraph station
In the afternoon Derren took us to the old Telegraph Station outside town. This station was actually the reason why the settlement was originally established here in the middle of nowhere; it was where the telegraph lines crossed from North to South and from West to East. To our surprise we were joined by another couchsurfer, a Chilean girl called Lorena who also came to stay at Derren’s, as well as a British girl called Jess who didn’t stay at the house but came along for the outing and a few drinks. No problem, of course some people host many surfers at the time and the girls were lovely. We took a little walk to the top of a little hill from where we could see the view of the town as well as the surrounding mountain range, the MacDonnel Range. We could also see the original Telegraph Station but we didn’t go in there. Derren had said that at this time just before sunset you can often see wallabies and sure enough, we saw at least three or four hopping along, some with little joeys in their pouches.
Then we went back to Derren’s place where we cooked dinner (Gina’s special Hungarian style chicken, with mushroom version for the vegetarians). While chatting over dinner it turned out that Michael is a musician and he was going to a bar later for a jam session so we naturally decided to join him as his entourage. It was a great night with many good performances, we really enjoyed it.

The next day was another chill-out day, all we did was a quick visit to the Botanical Gardens (in the middle of the desert, not exactly as lush a place as you might expect) and the rest of the day was spent by the pool once again. As the following day was Saturday, Derren and Michael were heading to the nearby mountains where they often take surfers in West MacDonnel Range. As our bus to the next destination left in the evening at around 7, luckily we had time to join them as it was a beautiful place and a great way to spend our last day in Alice. A bunch of Derren’s friends were there as well as Lorena so it was quite a gathering. We also met a couple there who were raising an orphan baby kangaroo – it was quite possibly the sweetest thing I had ever seen! In the evening we hopped on the Greyhound bus that took us 1200km north to the town of Katherine.
