Osa Kaksikymmentäseitsemän – Part Twenty-seven: Sydney

Lento Dubaista Sydneyhin kesti noin 14 tuntia, yksi pisimmistä lentomatkoista mitä olen kokenut. Siinä ehti katsoa kolme leffaa sekä muutaman jakson komediasarjoja, yrittää nukkua monta kertaa tuloksetta sekä syödä pari ateriaa ja muutaman välipalan. Lähdimme Dubaista maanantaiaamuna ja laskeuduimme Sydneyhin tiistaina aamuseitsemän tienoilla – kokonainen päivä katosi siinä välillä.
Matka kentältä sohvasurffailijan luo meni yllättävän helposti junan, bussin ja reilun kilometrin kävelyn kautta rinkat selässä, vaikka olimmekin melko sekaisin aikaeroväsymyksen takia. Sohva sijaitsi Lane Cove-nimisellä alueella noin 15 minuutin bussimatkan päässä keskustasta. Alue vaikutti todella mukavalta, rauhalliselta paikalta jossa olisi hyvä asua.

The flight from Dubai to Sydney took about 14 hours, one of the longest flights we have ever taken. We had time to watch three movies, a couple of episodes of sit-coms, eat a couple of meals and snacks and try to sleep on several occasions (without much success). We left Dubai Monday morning and landed in Sydney Tuesday morning around 7am – we lost a whole day in the process.
Getting from the airport to our host’s place was surprisingly easy by train, bus and about a kilometre’s walk, even though we were not feeling very smart with the jet lag. The host lived in a lovely area called Lane Cove about 15 minutes’ bus ride from the centre. Our actual host, Rossman, was at work but his French friend Ludo was staying with him and let us in, showed us around and guided us to the nearby supermarket. Oh, the bliss of getting to a normal supermarket where one could buy fruits and vegetables! After eating and showering we had to resort to taking a nap as it was impossible to stay awake. We hadn’t made any major plans for the day anyway, we knew we’ll need some rest. After sleeping for about 3 hours we felt a lot better and had energy to go the supermarket again with a little bit more sense as we wanted to cook for the guys in the evening and had forgotten half of the ingredients on our first visit. That was it for the first day, we got to know Rossman in the evening and we were planning the coming days. We got to bed early hoping to get over the jetlag.

Keskiviikkona suuntasimme takaisin kaupungin keskustaan.

On Wednesday morning we headed back to the centre. Rossman gave us a good tip that there is a free walking tour of the town every day so we participated on one. We walked around the centre that was nice and compact, easily walkable. The guide was an epitome of a cheerfully jokey Aussie – really funny and informative at the same time. The tour gave us a good idea of the orientation so that we could find all the sights by ourselves afterwards.
Another project was to get a local sim card to be able to communicate with hosts etc. Unfortunately we couldn’t actually buy it the same day as we didn’t have our passports (only the copies) but at least we could do the price comparison and choose a good one. Untypically enough, we also ended up doing some shopping – we were planning to go out with the guys on Friday night but we realized we had absolutely no presentable shoes; we couldn’t even get into any trendy bars in our hiking boots. So it was necessary to buy simple black pumps that we luckily found easily in the first shop we walked into. Gina was saying “I can’t believe I’m in a shoe shop!”

One kind of nice thing in Sydney is that it’s not packed with ”must-see” sights. We were just hanging out around the Opera House taking pictures of the Harbour Bridge and then went to the Harbour Bridge to take pictures of the Opera House (along the way we could get pictures of both) but apart from that we didn’t feel the need to run from one sight to another. One day we took the ferry to Manley beach with Ludo, which was a nice place to hang out and the ferry ride itself rewarded us with great views of the harbour. Another day we went to the famous Bondi beach even though the weather wasn’t really warm enough for actual beach stuff – it was full of people in bikinis but we found it too cold and windy for that. We were lucky as Sculptures by the Sea event was going on and the coastal walk from Bondi was filled with different art pieces and sculptures. We walked with Ludo (and with a couple of hundred other people – the place was packed!) from one beach to another admiring both the art and the landscape, it would have been a lovely place even without the artwork.

Night out with the guys

Friday night we headed out on the town to see Sydney by night with Rossman and Ludo. We ended up in the legendary Stonewall gay bar where the craic was mighty (as the Irish would say). We loved the music and there were several drag shows so that was a recipe for a good night. Also there we experienced how open and friendly Aussies can be; we were approached several times for a chat. As usual, about 90% of the clientele were (gay) men and there were maybe two or three lessie couples in the mix.
Our days in Sydney were spent by chilling out rather than ticking sights from a list, which was great. For lunch we found surprisingly good deals; in advance we had been scared of the horrific prices of Australia but in Sydney food courts it was easy to find a nice lunch for 5 AUD, no matter if you wanted sushi, falafel or fried rice with vegetables. It was such a fabulous city, we definitely have to go back at the end of the Oz tour. Actually we are forced to as we left some stuff at Rossman’s place so that we wouldn’t need to carry it all with us the whole time. Rossman is such a lovely guy that we definitely want to see him again no matter what.

  1. Companies frequently utilize customary versatile phone SIM cards rather than M2M SIM cards. Be that as it may, imperative quality requirements are lost within the handle. This can be since standard SIM cards are appropriate for other ranges of applications than M2M SIM cards.
