Osa Kolmekymmentäkolme – Party Thirty-three: Airlie Beach & Whitsunday Islands

Airlie Beach on yksi suosituimmista paikoista, joista mennä kuuluisille Whitsunday Islands-saarille.
Whitehaven Beach

Airlie Beach is one of the most popular bases to visit the famous Whitsunday Islands. I had read before that it’s a backpacker party mecca and this turned out to be true. Sometimes you just feel old and Airlie Beach is one of the places that make you feel ancient. I daresay most of the clientele was minimum 10, if not 15 years younger than us. In any case we wanted to just stay there one night and for the following day we had a 3 days 2 nights sailing trip booked with Samurai. There are all sorts of boats trips for all budgets going to the islands and we picked a relatively small vessel (maximum 21 passengers) that was surprisingly cheap at 360 AUD per person. As usual you had all the meals and drinking water included as well as the snorkelling gear (including the wet suit that was necessary due to the venomous jellyfish). One main benefit of this trip compared to the others was that it included a free dive (a proper one for the certified divers and a “dive experience” for the beginners). I had never tried scuba diving and I didn’t really want to pay for it as I suspected it’s not really my thing, being slightly aqua phobic, but sure I was happy to try it for free.

Chilling on the boat

Snorkelling

We stayed the night at Magnum's Backpacker Resort where the private room with a shared bathroom cost 56 AUD. It was a nice place, you felt like you were in the middle of the jungle. We skipped the party scene since I knew from bitter experience that sailing and hangover do not mix well. The following morning we headed to the boat and met the rest of the group; an international mix of Germans, Scots, Icelandic, Danish as well as a few South Americans. After sailing for a couple of hours we got to try the diving. It was really a cool experience even though it just reaffirmed my belief that it’s not my thing – 15 minutes was enough for me. First we were playing around with the equipment, tried breathing through the mask, clearing the mask of water etc. in shallow water and once everyone felt comfortable with that we went for the dive to about 4 – 5 metres. That felt pretty intense to me! Luckily it went well even though I was a bit scared I would freak out under water.
Whitehaven Beach

During the trip we snorkelled every day a couple of times in different locations. Each place was bit different with different parts of the reef, different fish and other sea creatures. The reef was just breath-takingly beautiful and there was an incredible variety of sea life. The highlight of the trip was the Whitehave Beach that had the whitest finest sand I have ever seen in my life. It was stunning, although a bit too popular; we were there early in the morning as we had anchored nearby but even so there were a lot of people and our guide said there are nearly 200 boats (mainly small sailing boats, but still) coming ashore every day.
We really enjoyed the whole trip, we had nice travel companions, gorgeous scenery and great places to snorkel. In the evenings we had some nice and shared stories with the rest of the group and although it was pretty cramped on the boat we all got along fine. It was a lovely three days but then the time came to move along again; we got back to Airlie Beach in the afternoon and at 7pm the bus took off towards Mackay where we had to pick up the next relocation car the following day. We stayed the night at a couchsurfer’s place and hit the road the next morning heading to Brisbane.
