Kypros Osa 4: Larnaka Cyprus Part 4: Larnaca

As our holiday was nearing its end, we spent the last three days taking it easy in Larnaca. This town turned out to be our favourite place on this tour de Cyprus - as Larnaca is the third largest town in Cyprus, it didn't have the "deserted ghost town" atmosphere that Paphos did on the off season. Larnaca has a great mix of real town vibes and laid-back touristy vibes. We stayed in Lakis Court apartments which deserves a mention for great value for money. The apartment was in perfect condition, everything seemed new and clean and the reception was very friendly. It was about three minutes' walk to the beach and only cost 30€ per night (obviously it must be considerably more in the summertime).

Larnaca by day and night

In the town of Larnaca there are a few sights worth visiting and you can easily cover them in less than a day. The medieval castle (entrance fee 2,5€), mosque and the Church of St. Lazarus are all within a few minutes' walk from one another. The small Turkish quarter is also a pleasant place for a stroll and if you are interested in handicrafts, this is the place where you will find work shops and boutiques of all sorts. Other than that, an average tourist probably spends their time hopping from one bar or restaurant to another on the beach promenade.
Sultan Hala Tekke

Cats of Sultan Hala Tekke

If you have transport, however, Larnaca makes a great base for exploring more places in the vicinity. Right next to the airport, about 9 kilometres from town, there is a salt lake which is a beautiful place for hiking around, especially in the wintertime when you can see flamingos. We saw several small flocks of them wading through the shallow waters of the lake, moving from one end to another in an endless loop. Just by the salt lake stands also the magnificent Hala Sultan Tekke mosque which is a great place to visit, not only due to the hundreds of cats who live there! We were not the only tourists spending probably more time on the parking lot petting cats than in the actual mosque...

Yhtenä päivänä teimme road tripin Cape Grecolle, jossa on ihana patikkareitti karua rantakalliota pitkin.

At Cape Greco

Nissi beach in winter

One day we did a road trip to Cape Greco with its lovely hiking trail along the rugged coast line. Luckily the weather was merciful, it was a beautiful sunny day and the cold wind didn't stop us from enjoying the amazing scenery. It was about five kilometres' hike from the parking lot until the highlight which was the sea caves. In the summertime you can see the caves from a boat trip, but on the off-season there are no boat trips. However you get a really impressive view of the caves from the view point and they are well worth the walk - just stunning! After getting back to the car we drove to see the cute Agioi Anargyroi chapel that is among the very few buildings in the park, standing all by itself on the rocky cliff.

On the way back we stop on the Nissi beach of Aya Napa just to see how it looked in the winter. Not surprisingly, the beach was completely deserted and the countless bars and restaurants lining the beach were all closed for the season. I can imagine the place being pumping in the summer but now it was a ghost town.

Kiitos Kypros, palataan asiaan!

Larnaca was a great place to conclude our Cyprus holiday. We liked it so much that we are planning to come back maybe in spring time - that way we could also visit the Troodos mountains which were this time out of our reach due to the snow. Thank you Cyprus, we will be back!
