Kypros Osa 1: Pafos Cyprus Part 1: Paphos

When choosing the destination for our winter getaway, the most important criteria were the budget (which quickly led to eliminating the far away tropical destinations) and the climate. Of course winter is winter everywhere in Europe, but at least we didn't want to go to a place with worse (read colder) weather than Malta. We also wanted to be able to visit historical sights as well as enjoying the nature so we ended up going to Cyprus.

Another reason to travel to Cyprus - loads of cats everywhere!

Sea front of Paphos

Talvikaudella Kypros on todellakin budjettimatkailijan unelma.

In the low season Cyprus is a dream come true for a budget traveller. Most of the tourists obviously visit during the summer so this time of the year it is pretty deserted and those hotels that do stay open during the winter drop their prices to rock-bottom. We flew by Ryanair from Malta via Athens to Paphos and rented a car from Europcars at the laughable rate of 10€ per day. The weather of course depends on your luck at this time of the year. We were very lucky as during our 8-day holiday it only rained a couple of times (usually in the night time when we were snugly in bed!) and most days it was beautiful and sunny.

Orthodox icons in a catacomb in Paphos

We stayed two nights in Paphos in an aparthotel that I would only recommend for the price (27€ per night) and its proximity to the city centre. Presumably in the summer season Paphos is a very lively and busy tourist town but at this time of the year it seemed to be at the verge of dying (as did the few other tourists we saw about). The streets were full of different establishments targeted at tourists, such as accommodation, restaurants, bars, car rentals and travel agencies, but almost all of them were closed and there were hardly any people on the streets. We do enjoy a bit of peace and quiet, especially after the constant hustle and bustle of Malta, but even for us this seemed a bit strange. As a town Paphos did not seem to have an ounce of charm (certainly not the touristy Lower Paphos) but when it comes to the sights, this is definitely a town worth a (quick) visit.

At the Tombs of the Kings

Mosaic floor at the Archeological Park

Roman Amphitheatre and lighthouse

According to the legend the goddess Aphrodite was born of the waves on the coast of Paphos and you can see the influence that has had on the names of the streets, places and establishments - it seemed everything was named Aphrodite this and Aphrodite that. Paphos is a UNESCO World Heritage site and it has an abundance of ancient sights. Among the most important is the Archeological park where you can easily spend a couple of hours. After paying the very reasonable entrance fee of 4,5€ you can admire the Roman Amphitheatre, the gigantic mosaic floors of the ancient Roman villa, ruins of a castle and much more. The park is spread out in a big area and we walked around until our feet got sore. It was a really impressive place with much more to see than I had expected. A few kilometres from the town there is the Tombs of the Kings (entrance fee 2,5€) where important people (although not actually kings) from the Roman and Hellenistic times were buried. Also this is a large area where, apart from the impressive tombs, you can enjoy lovely views over the sea and yes, keep walking a few more kilometres.

As I mentioned, most of the restaurants were closed for the season but along the main street we did encounter two open tavernas, of which we chose Georgia Meze House and that was a great choice! We were the only customers in the cozy taverna, sitting comfortably by the fire and eating absolutely amazing vegetarian moussaka and (for the wifie) kleftiko, oven-baked lamb typical for the region.

After two nights in Paphos it was time to move on to do hiking in the Akamas Peninsula - more in the next post!
