Kypros Osa 3: Jaettu pääkaupunki Nikosia Cyprus Part 3:The divided capital Nicosia

Kreikankielisten Lefkosiana tuntema pääkaupunki Nikosia on maailman tällä hetkellä ainoa jaettu pääkaupunki.

The capital of Cyprus, Nicosia (known as Lefkosia for Greek-speakers) is the only divided capital left in the world. The "green line" going through the old town has separated the Greek and the Turkish sides of the town since 1974. Nowadays it is easy to hop over the border though, as long as you bring your passport.

Buyuk Han

For a tourist, almost everything of interest is located within the walls of the old city. We started off by exploring the Greek side, whose pedestrian street left me a little underwhelmed at first - I had expected old-fashioned charm with narrow streets and little bars, instead I found a busy street lined with clothing stores like H&M and Zara, with the likes of McDonald's and KFC providing the culinary side of things. Fortunately, as soon as we stepped to the side streets, there were considerably less flashing lights of commercialism and more charming little establishments. The sights included mainly historical buildings and churches, for example The Byzantine Museum where you will also find a cultural centre, The Sacred Temple of Virgin Mary Faneromenis and several old gates leading into the old city, such as the Famagusta Gate. We spent a relaxing few hours walking around the compact old town, stopping regularly to treat ourselves either to Cyprus coffee (which resembles remarkably both Turkish and Greek coffee), a beer or gyros (and whatever the veggie version was for me).

Selimye Mosque

Seuraavana päivänä suuntasimme turkkilaiselle puolelle kaupunkia. Rajanylityspaikkoja on vanhassa kaupungissa useampia. Me käytimme Ledra-kävelykadun päässä olevaa rajanylitystä, joka oli helppo löytää eikä ylityksessä kauaa nokka tuhissut. Turkkilainen Nicosia olikin heti ihan eri maailmansa.

Turkish side old town

The following day we headed over to the Turkish side of Nicosia. There are several border crossing points in the old city. We used the one at the end of the pedestrian street Ledra where the crossing was quick and hassle-free. The Turkish side of the town was a world apart from the Greek side. Here you found bazaars instead of big clothing brands and little cafes instead of Starbucks. And naturally more mosques than churches! We visited Selimiye Mosque (originally built as a cathedral) and the Buyuk Han which functions nowadays as a cozy cultural centre. The atmosphere really reminded me of the quieter side streets of Istanbul. When buying a scarf at the bazaar we were treated to a cup of apple tea and a pleasant chat with the friendly shop keeper, who is wishing for more Finnish tourists visiting Nicosia - oh, how he loves Finnish people! I found the slightly shabby Turkish side of the town much more intriguing than the Greek side.

As we were in Nicosia for New Year's, we expected obviously a good old street party with fire works and so on. As we were hanging around the old town in the daytime the atmosphere was already getting rather jubilant - bars were filling up, several people were setting up barbecue parties on the street, the music was blasting and shots of Zivania were knocked back all over the place. We returned to the hotel to get a bit of rest so as to have energy to party all night long. What a nasty surprise it was to return to the town around 9pm, only to find the streets deserted, nearly all bars and restaurants closed and absolutely not a trace of any sort of a party on the streets!

To this day we still don't really have an explanation for this - a tourist we met on the streets said they heard the locals spend New Year's Eve at home with family and only party the next day, but I have doubts that is the case. Somebody else said the fire works had been cancelled due to lack of money, which is plausible but still doesn't explain why the bars and restaurants were closed. All the Cypriots we told about this later on seemed surprised and didn't have an explanation for the total lack of festivities.

Loppu hyvin, kaikki hyvin.

Random New Year's Party!

However, all's well that ends well. We happened to find a little restaurant that was open and at least had a few customers, so we decided to go in to at least have dinner. We were welcomed by a strangely bubbly waitress with a bizarre "high five" gesture, the floor was covered by napkins and we certainly had some misgivings about the place. However, there wasn't really any other choice and we had to eat, so we made our order and hoped for the best. The couple at the table next to us starting chatting to us and told us they had already been in the restaurant for two hours and they were convinced that the waitress was at the very least drunk as a skunk, possibly on drugs. Apparently she had thrown all those napkins on the floor as part of a dance performance to the Greek sirtaki music (which had been blasting the entire time they had been in the restaurant, the same songs over and over again). This friendly couple invited us to their table and we ended up having a great evening with one German couple and one French-Brazilian couple. Eventually we did get our food (even though at some point the waitress had forgotten about our order entirely and at another point brought us somebody else's food), we enjoyed copious amounts of wine and listened to endless sirtaki. By midnight we were all dancing with the waitress having a great time. In promptu parties are the best parties!

Vuoden ensimmäisenä päivänä käänsimme sitten auton nokan kohti viimeistä kohdettamme Kyproksella - Larnaka, täältä tullaan!

The first day of the year we turned the car towards our last destination in Cyprus - Larnaca, here we come!
