Vapaaehtoistyötä Guatemalassa - Volunteering in Guatemala
Pieni mustatukkainen lapsi likaisissa vaatteissaan juoksee suoraan syliini huudahtaen iloisesti "buenas tardes!" Halaan häntä takaisin hieman hämmentyneenä - en ole tottunut tällaiseen välittömyyteen pieneltä ihmiseltä, jota en ole ikinä edes tavannut. Pian tulisin tähän kuitenkin tottumaan; nämä lapset hyväksyvät uudet aikuiset elämäänsä saman tien kyselemättä, ainakin tässä turvallisessa paikassa. I hug her back, feeling a little overwhelmed - I am not used to such spontaneous affection from a little person I have never even met. Soon I would get used to it though; these children accept new adults into their lives instantly, no questions asked, at least in this safe place. This is my first day of volunteer work in Guatemala in an organization that supports the poorest families in the area.
Maailmanympärysmatkamme oli vienyt meidät jo lukuisiin Aasian maihin (kuten esimerkiksi Sri Lankaan, Filippiineille ja Japaniin), Havaijille ja Teksasiin, mutta viimeisen kuukautemme halusimme viettää ihan erilaisissa tunnelmissa. Paikasta toiseen rinkan kanssa säntäilyn sijaan halusimme pysytellä paikoillamme ja yrittää tehdä jotain hyvää, ja parantaa samalla ruosteessa olevaa espanjankielentaitoamme. Toteutimme siis pitkäaikaisen haaveemme vapaaehtoistyöstä Väli-Amerikassa, ja kohteeksemme valikoitui Guatemala, jossa emme olleet aiemmin käyneet.
Our round-the-world trip had already taken us to several countries in Asia (such as Sri Lanka, Philippines and Japan) as well as Hawaii and Texas, but for the last month of the trip we wanted to do something completely different. Instead of dashing from one place to another with our backpacks we were looking to stay put and try to give something back, as well as improving our rusty Spanish. Therefore we finally fulfilled our long-lived dream of doing volunteer work in Central America, and we chose as our destination Guatemala, where we hadn't visited before.
Vapaaehtoistyöprojekteja ulkomailta etsiessä täytyy ottaa huomioon paljon asioita, sillä tässäkään asiassa kaikki ei ole aina sitä, miltä näyttää. Osa näistä organisaatioista voi olla ihan oikealla asialla, ja järjestö vaan yksinkertaisesti tarvitsee enemmän rahaa kuin ilmaista työvoimaa, mutta osa on ihan silkkaa huijausta. Pahimmassa tapauksessa luodaan jopa valeorpokoteja vapaaehtoisia varten.
When looking for volunteer work abroad you need to do your research, as everything is not as it seems. First of all, we wanted to ensure that the NGO we choose is a legitimate organization that genuinely aims at helping the local community or the environment, instead of just generating profit from gullible volunteers. It is quite common to have to pay for the privilege to go work for free, and the costs can be pretty high - I have even heard of some organizations charging thousands of euros. Some of these organizations may be legit, and the truth is that they simply need money more than they really need free labour, but some are pure scams. In the worst case they may even create fake orphanages just to get volunteers (and their money) in.

I signed up on Volunteer Latin America, where for a small fee (10 GBP for 2 years' membership) you get information on reliable NGO's that offer volunteering opportunities either for free or for a very small fee. This is where I found a non-profit organization called Caras Alegres which is located in one of the poorest neighbourhoods of the city of Quetzaltenango. The organization offers a free lunch and after school programme for the children of the nearby school, and they always need volunteers to help the kids with home work, in different sort of educational and artistic activities and games. We contacted them by email and got a speedy response with a comprehensive information package about what they do and what they expect from volunteers. After communicating back and forth for a couple of weeks, we were convinced Caras Alegres is the place for us, and we booked our tickets to Guatemala.

Some organizations might be in the position to offer food and accommodation to their volunteers, but Caras Alegres does not have this possibility. We organized our own accommodation by renting a small apartment in one of the many language schools in the city, and also took care of our own food. The NGO asks for a small donation of about 23 euros from their volunteers, and with that you also get the T-shirt you can wear while working. This is a small operation with three full-time employees and two part-time workers in the kitchen preparing the lunch for the kids. All the paid employees are local people, while the volunteers are typically foreigners. Running of the whole organization costs around 40 000 USD per year, which is all donations from either private people or foundations. The donations don't pay for running a large organization, or big salaries of some CEO's, but they go straight to helping the children.

Kokemuksemme oli ehdottomasti positiviinen, vaikka eihän lasten kanssa työskentely koskaan helppoa ole - etenkään, kun minulla ei ole juurikaan kokemusta lapsista, enkä ole koskaan ollut mitenkään erikoisen hyvä lasten kanssa. Espanjan puhuminen tuotti omat haasteensa, emmekä suinkaan aina ymmärtäneet mitä lapset selittivät.
Kosketti kuitenkin sydäntäni, miten luottavaisia ja avoimia suuri osa näistä lapsista oli. He ottivat heti kädestä kiinni, kiipesivät syliin, hyväksyivät uudet vapaaehtoiset heti ystävikseen ja ainakin suurin piirtein tottelivat meitä. Heillä oli varmasti omat haasteensa kodeissaan köyhyyden keskellä, ja huomasi kyllä, ettei heillä ollut paljon mitään materiaalista hyvää: monet lapset tulivat kerhoon päivä toisensa jälkeen samoissa resuisissa, likaisissa vaatteissa, jotkut ilman sukkia, toisilla hiukset täitä kuhisten. He osasivat kuitenkin hyvin jakaa niitä leluja, mitä Caras Alegresilla oli tarjota: vapaan leikkitunnin aikana he sopivat vuoroista, kuka käyttää mitäkin polkupyörää ja kenen vuoro oli nyt käyttää rullaluistimia, eikä tappeluita juurikaan ollut. Nämä lapset eivät kai ole tottuneet omimaan tavaroita.
So, what was working with them really like? We definitely had a positive experience, although working with children has its challenges - especially for someone like me, who has never been particularly great with them, nor do I have much experience with kids. Speaking Spanish with them added some more challenges, and there were certainly times when I had little idea what the kids were on about.
However, it was really touching how trusting and open most of these children were. They would immediately take your hand, climb onto your lap, accept the new volunteers as their friends and, at least somewhat, obey us. They sure had some challenges in their own lives in abject poverty, and you could easily tell they didn't have much in the material sense; some of the kids came in day after day in the same dirty, broken clothes, some without socks, some with lice-infested hair. They were great at sharing, though: during free games they seemed content sharing the toys that Caras Alegres had to offer, agreed whose turn it was now to use this bike or those roller blades, and they didn't really argue much. I suppose these kids are not used to hogging things, as they don't own much.

Caras Alegres does important work to help out poor families in need. Maybe the future is at least a bit brighter for these kids, thanks to this NGO. At least right now, when they can be at Caras Alegres surrounded by safe adults, rather than roaming the streets by themselves while the parents are working, this organization is offering big help for a small person. As one of my favourites, 5-year-old Irma said one afternoon while sitting on my lap "I like being in Caras Alegres. I wish I could live here and always be here".
