Osa Kolmekymmentäkaksi: Cairns & Iso Valliriutta Part Thirty-two: Cairns and Great Barrior Reef

Itärannikon Cairns on yksi suosituimpia kaupunkeja, josta vierailla Isolla Valliriutalla.

Cairns is one of the most popular cities to visit the Great Barrier Reef. We took a comfortable 2,5 hour flight there from Darwin. At the Darwin Airport we decided to request a relocation of a campervan; in Australia and New Zealand the rental companies have a system whereby a customer can relocate a car practically for free. For example if a paying customer rented a car in Sydney and returned it in Melbourne to fly out from there, another customer can relocate the car back to Sydney and only pay nominal rental fee of 1 AUD per day. Some petrol (albeit not necessarily quite enough to cover the whole distance) is also paid by the rental company. So you have basically a free car, some free petrol and a time limit to get to the destination. We found a campervan to be relocated from Cairns to Townsville which was about 350km away down the coast and we had two days to do it. Once we landed to Cairns we already got a phone call to confirm the relocation so that was great – nearly free transport and a free accommodation in the camper!

We hadn’t managed to find a couch in Cairns so we finally booked a hostel the night before getting there. Actually this was the first time we had to stay in a hostel in Australia, until now it has been couchsurfing and camping all the way. We booked Jack Backpackers private room with shared bathroom for 55 AUD which is not bad for a centrally located hostel in Cairns. Ok, the room was tiny but it had a/c and a fridge, there was free wifi and even a simple dinner would have been included (usually they didn’t have a vegetarian option though so I could only avail myself of this one evening). There was a handy shuttle bus service from the airport that took you to the door and only cost 6 AUD so that was a nice surprise.
On the catamaran on the way to the Green Island

Green Island

Relaxing on the secluded beach on the island

Finally we only had two full days in Cairns as we needed to pick up the campervan, so we considered long and hard what to do as we didn’t have time to everything. Obviously we wanted to see the Great Barrier Reef so we booked a snorkelling trip to Green Island for the following day. We would have liked to book a small sailing boat but as the price difference was so great, we ended up on a large catamaran with a thousand Chinese tourists for 140 AUD per person (the sailing trip would have been around 200 AUD). The trip started at 9am with a 45 minute boat ride to the island where you had a few options on how to spend a couple of hours; you could take a glass bottom boat or semi-submarine to see the reef, you could go for a snorkelling or diving trip or if you didn’t want to pay for any extras you could also hang out at the island and swim/snorkel there. The latter option seemed a bit wasteful to me as from the island you couldn’t see the actual reef at all as it was too far from the beach. Sure, it was a lovely gorgeous island (we had time to walk all around it as it only took about half an hour) but surely everybody was here to see the reef – still it seemed some people stayed on the island. The lunch on the catamaran was included and after eating we still had some free time to swim and do snorkelling on the beach. There were some nice and colourful fish even though unfortunately while in the water we didn’t see any more exciting creatures – from the pier I had seen two turtles and a small reef shark (apparently those are not the man-eater kind!). Then it was time for the actual snorkelling trip with only a few other participants. We took a small boat a bit further away from the island and jumped in the water. Wow, the reef is just breath-taking – incredibly colourful and goes on as far as the eye can see, full of amazingly colourful fish of all sizes. Still no turtles but the reef itself was more than worth the whole trip.

Maisemat sieltä Sky trainista olivat todella upeat. Matkan varrella pysähdyttiin kahdesti, jolloin pääsi kävelemään lyhyitä reittejä sademetsässä ja lukemaan infoa paikallisista kasveista. Toisella pysähdyksellä näki hienot näköalat Barron Falls-vesiputouksesta. Sitten saavuimme Kurandaan, jonka odotin olevan pieni unelias kylä.

As we will continue from here down the coast and will also visit the reef from other locations, this one day trip was sufficient at this stage of the trip. For the second day we wanted to do something different and were debating whether to go to the Daintree National Park or to nearby Kuranda. As Daintree’s highlight seemed to be similar crocodile cruise than we had just done in Litchfield we opted for Kuranda, which was kind of an untypical choice for us. The idea is that you can take a SkyTrain there which is super-long cable car above the rainforest, then visit the zoo-type attractions in Kuranda and go back by Scenic Railway which is by Australian standards old railway going through amazing scenery. The reasons why this is untypical of us is that it didn’t require any physical efforts (and it turned out to be a favourite among the old American day-trippers from a luxury cruise ship), it was pretty expensive (whole thing with Skyrail ticket, train ticket and transfer to the cable car station was 109 AUD per person) and a very touristy thing to do. However, Greg (our host in Darwin) had recommended it and after reading how everybody was raving about it on Tripadvisor, we decided to go for it. And it was actually really good!

The scenery from the Sky Rail was just gorgeous. There were stop stations where you could stop along the way and take short boardwalks in the rainforest with information of the flora and fauna of the area. On the second stop there was a lookout with a great view of Barron Falls. Then we arrived in Kuranda which I had imagined to be a sleepy little village. Wrong. It seemed more like a purpose-built theme park for tourists with its only street lined with souvenir shops, cafes, restaurants and a few more souvenir shops. While ignoring the shops we did manage to find a lunch that fit our 5 AUD per person budget – veggie pie for me and emu pie for Gina. The attractions we wanted to visit included the BirdWorld and Koala Gardens as we hadn’t seen koalas yet and especially Gina loves the beautiful special birds of Australia. What was nice about the Birdworld was that the birds were not in cages but it was a free-flying park. The birds were really friendly indeed – at times it was actually hard to get rid of them when they decided to stay on your head or shoulder and even invite friends to join them. To my surprise Gina even wanted to buy them food – c’mon, we can hardly afford to buy food for ourselves! (that’s a joke, in case you worry) Koala Gardens was smaller than I expected but we did see koalas (wow those are some lazy buggers – apparently they sleep 22 hours per day!), wombats (so cute!), crocodiles and some wallabies and kangaroos. The kangaroos and wallabies were free to hop around but most of them opted to stay in their resting area that the tourists were not allowed to enter. It was nice to have a fence there, not to keep the kangaroos in but to keep the tourists out so that the animals could get a rest if they got tired of people.

The last train back to Cairns was at 3:30pm so we headed to the railway station. You could really see that the little village lives off the day-trippers – all those restaurants, cafes and souvenir shops started to close shop as the last train of the day was leaving. It must be a ghost town in the evening. Kuranda Railway Station was a quaint and charmingly old-fashioned looking, as was the train itself. During the 1,5 hour journey we got to enjoy awe-inspiring landscape and learned a bit about the history of building the railway. Apparently it was a superb feat to build this railway with their modest tools in the difficult circumstances.
Uusi seikkailu alkaa!
So all in all, another great day and I believe we made the most of our short stay in Cairns. The following day at 4pm we had to pick up the camper so we spent the morning hanging out by the (lagoon) and then continued down the coast, Gina driving the massive camper van. Start of a new adventure!
