Vietettyämme
päivän Krakovan vanhassakaupungissa ja juutalaiskorttelissa, omistimme toisen kokonaisen päivämme Krakovassa Wieliczkan suolakaivoksille, jonne pääsee vanhastakaupungista kätevästi joko junalla tai bussilla. Me matkasimme bussilla numero 304 Galeria Krakowska -ostoskeskuksen lähettyviltä. Lipun voi ostaa bussissa kolikoilla tai kortilla ja lippu maksoi suuntaansa alle euron.

After spending a day around Krakow old town and Jewish quarter, we dedicated our second full day in Krakow to the Wieliczka salt mine, a convenient bus or train journey from the old town. We took the bus number 304 from Galeria Krakowska directly to Wieliczka. You can buy the ticket on the bus by coins or card, and the ticket cost less than one euro per way.

Wieliczkan suolakaivos on Krakovan seudun suosituimpia turistinähtävyyksiä, vaikka paikalliset pitävät sitä ylihinnoiteltuna. Kieltämättä pääsylipun hinta on melko suolainen (heh heh), noin 22 € per henkilö, jonka huipuksi kortilla maksaessa hinta perittiin jostain tuntemattomasta syystä brittipunnissa, vaikka korttimme oli euroissa. Edullisin vaihtoehto meille olisi tietenkin periminen paikallisvaluutassa, mutta euroissakin maksaminen olisi parempi vaihtoehto - mistä hemmetistä ne brittipunnat kuittiin ilmestyivät, sitä en tiedä. Tästä seurasi tietenkin ylimääräisiä pankkikuluja. Joka tapauksessa, hinnasta huolimatta mielestäni kaivos oli ehdottomasti käymisen arvoinen, sillä en ole ikinä nähnyt mitään vastaavaa.Valitettavasti parempi kameramme oli huollossa ja kaivoksen pimeydessä huomaa todellakin vanhan kameramme puutteet - kovin hyviä kuvia sieltä emme siis saaneet, joten joudutte käymään itse paikan päällä nähdäksenne, miten hienoa siellä oikeasti oli.

The Wieliczka salt mine is among the most popular tourist destinations around Krakow, although the locals consider it overpriced. Admittedly the entrance fee at 22 € per person is pretty pricey, on top of which our card was charged in British pounds for some unknown reason, although the card is in Euros. Obviously the best option would be to pay in local currency, but even Euro payment would have been better - where the heck GBP came from, I have no idea, but it left us with extra bank fees to pay. Anyway, despite the price I definitely think the mine is worth a visit, as I have never seen anything similar to it. Unfortunately our better camera was in service and in the darkness of the mine you could really tell how much worse our old camera is - so our pictures really cannot show the grandeur of the place, you will have to go and see for yourselves.
Kaivoksessa vierailijan täytyy ottaa opastettu kierros, omin päin kaivokseen ei pääse haahuilemaan. Reittivaihtoehtoja on kaksi, tunnetumpi turistireitti ja seikkailullisempi Miner-reitti, joka on käsittääkseni suht uusi lisäys. Me valitsimme perusturistireitin, joka alkoi laskeutumalla hurja määrä portaita (muistelen niitä olleen noin 800 kaikkiaan) alas kaivoksen syövereihin. Vaikka tunsin olevani hirmuisen syvällä maan alla, turistit pääsevät vain kolmanteen maanalaiseen kerrokseen asti (135 m maan alla), kun kaikkiaan kerroksia on yhdeksän. Opas kertoi matkallamme paljon mielenkiintoisia yksityiskohtia siitä, miten kaivoksessa aikoinaan työskenneltiin. Mieleeni jäi erityisesti se, että työhevoset saattoivat joutua oleilemaan maan alla jopa 20 vuotta, sillä niiden kuljettaminen ylös ja alas olisi ollut liian aikaavievää. Hevosraukat! Eipä sillä, oli toki kaivoksessa työskentelevillä miehilläkin rankka ja vaarallinen elämä. Tästä syystä kaivostyöntekijät tukeutuivat uskontoon ja niinpä kaivoksesta löytyykin paljon kappeleita ja pyhimysten kuvia.
In order to visit the mine one must join a guided tour, it is not possible to wander around by yourself. There are two possible route options, the better-known Tourist Route and the more adventurous Miner's Route which is a more recent addition. We chose the touristy route, which starts by descending a staggering number of stairs (around 800 steps altogether, if my memory serves me right) down to the mine. Even though I felt I was terribly deep underground, the tourists can only descend until the third level of the mine (135 metres underground), while there are altogether nine levels. Along our way the guide was telling us lots of interesting details about the life in the mines and how the people used to work there. What stayed in my mind especially was that the working horses might have had to spend all of 20 years below ground, as it would have been too time-consuming transporting them up and down. Poor horses! Not that the life would have been easy for the miners themselves - it was a very hard and dangerous life, which is why the miners were very religious people and why there are so many chapels and pictures of saints in different parts of the mine.
Maan alla oli yllättävän paljon nähtävää, mistä kaikkein vaikuttavin oli tietenkin Pyhän Kingan kappeli - valtava kammio suolasta tehtyine kristallikruunuineen ja pyhimysten kuvineen. Kuvamme eivät valitettavasti tee ollenkaan oikeutta tälle hienolle näylle. Pidin erikoisesti myös maanalaisesta suolajärvestä, joka hohti epätodellisen sinisenä kaivoksen valoissa. Kierroksen jälkeen päätimme käydä myös museossa, jonka opastettu kierros kuului myös lipun hintaan. Museokäynti täydensi visiittiä mukavasti, mutta ei tarjonnut mitään henkeäsalpaavia elämyksiä itsessään.

There was surprisingly a lot to see underground, the most impressive place being of course the famous St. Kinga's Chapel - a vast chamber with its chandeliers made of salt and artwork. Unfortunately our pictures did not work out well at all and don't do justice to this awe-inspiring sight. I also really liked the saline lakes, that had an unearthly blue glow in the light of the mine. After the tour we decided to also visit the guided tour of the museum, which was included in the ticket. The tour of the museum was a nice addition to the mine tour, but in itself didn't offer any breath-taking experiences.

Kaiken kaikkiaan vietimme kolmisen tuntia suolakaivoksessa, eikä se tuntunut ollenkaan liian pitkältä ajalta. Oli kuitenkin kieltämättä mukavaa päästä hissillä takaisin maan pinnalle hengittämään raikasta ilmaa!
All in all we spent around three hours down in the mine, and it wasn't too long a time. However, it was really nice to take the lift back up into the world and breathe some fresh air!
