Wadi Rum, maailman kaunein aavikko? Wadi Rum, the Most Beautiful Desert on Earth?

Vietettyämme kaksi päivää Petrassa oli aika jatkaa matkaa kohti toista Jordanian upeimmista kohteista: Wadi Rumin aavikkoa. Sinne matkataan usein taksilla, mutta Wadi Musasta menee myös bussi Wadi Rumiin joka aamu klo 6.30 (7 JD per henkilö). Hotellin henkilökunta voi varata bussin, joka tulee sitten hakemaan kaikki turistit kotiovelta - toisin sanoen, jos sinut haetaan ensimmäisenä hotelliltasi, pyörit ensimmäiset 30 - 45 minuuttia ympäri Wadi Musaa hakemassa muita matkaajia hotelleilta. Kun lopulta lähdimme Wadi Musasta, matka Wadi Rumin sisäänkäynnille kesti pari tuntia.

After spending two days in Petra it was time to move on towards another amazing destination in Jordan: Wadi Rum desert. People often take a taxi to get there, but there is also a bus from Wadi Musa to Wadi Rum every morning at around 6.30am. The staff at your hotel can make the booking for you, and the bus comes to pick you up from the hotel - in other words, if you are the first one to be picked up, you are going to spend the first 30 - 45 minutes going around Wadi Musa picking other travellers up from their hotels. Once we finally got out of Wadi Musa, it took about two hours to reach the entrance of Wadi Rum.

Enjoying some Bedouin tea

Pääsymaksu Wadi Rumiin sisältyi Jordan Passiimme, ja olimme varanneet etukäteen koko päivän jeeppimatkan aavikolla sekä yön majoituksen Candles Campista, jonka omistaja Mahdi oli sovitusti meitä vastassa bussiasemalla. Pääsimme istumaan jeepin avoimeen takaosaan ja kaasuttelimme kohti leiripaikkaa, josta poimimme mukaamme kaverimme päiväretkelle - englantilais-amerikkalaisen pariskunnan, joiden nimet ovat jo kadonneet mielestämme. Molemmat olivat kuitenkin todella mukavia tyyppejä, joiden kanssa päivä kului rattoisasti.

The entrance fee of Wadi Rum was included in our Jordan Pass. We had booked in advance a whole day jeep tour with overnight at Candles Camp, whose owner Mahdi met us at the bus station as agreed. We got to sit in the back of an open jeep and drove towards the camp, where we picked up our tour mates for the day - an English-American couple whose names we have already forgotten. However, both of them were really nice people, and we spent a lovely day together.

Olimme etukäteen googletelleet näitä aavikkoretkiä, joita näyttää olevan tarjolla todella runsaasti, mutta periaatteessa kaikki tarjoavat suunnilleen samaa settiä suunnilleen samaan hintaan. Koko päivän retki, johon sisältyi lounas, illallinen sekä yöpyminen ja seuraavan aamun aamiainen, maksoi 70 JD per henkilö kahdelle hengelle. Pysähdyimme mm. Lawrence Spring -lähteellä, jossa kiipesimme kukkulan huipulle näkemään ympärillä leviävän aavikon, hiekkadyyneillä, joilla kuuluu kiivetä ensin upottavassa hiekassa ylös ja sitten juosta alas dyyniä, Burrah-kanjonilla dramaattisine maisemineen sekä "kivisillalla", jossa luonto on muodostanut huikean kalliokaaren tyhjyyden yli.

We had done quite a bit of research in advance of all these different types of day tours at the desert, which seem to offer great variety but basically pretty much all of them offer the same things at more or less the same price. The whole day trip including lunch, dinner, overnight and the next day's breakfast cost 70 JD per person, when booking for 2 people. The stops included for example the Lawrence Spring, where we climbed up the hill to see the awe-inspiring desert scenery in every direction, sand dunes, where the thing to do is to climb up the dune (while trying not to sink in the sand) and then run down as fast as you can, Burrah canyon with its dramatic landscapes and the rock bridge, where the nature has formed an amazing rock bridge arching over the emptiness.

Nautimme retkestä suuresti, aavikon maisemat olivat ällistyttävän hienot enkä yhtään ihmettele, että Wadi Rumia kutsutaan maailman kauneimmaksi aavikoksi. Oppaamme ei tosin ollut mitään huippuluokkaa - hän vaikutti ujolta eikä puhunut paljon englantia, ja jokaiselle kohteelle päästyämme ohjeistus oli "menkää tuonne, ottakaa kuva, tulkaa takaisin." Olisi ollut ihan kiva saada vähän enemmän infoa siitä, mistä meidän piti milloinkin ottaa kuva, mutta joka tapauksessa tämä oli todella hyvä päivä. Jossain vaiheessa pysähdyimme kallion katveeseen, jossa me turistit saimme köllötellä rauhassa matolla, kun oppaamme valmisti meille kieltämättä sangen maistuvan lounaan, jonka jälkeen maittoikin pienet päivänokoset - tämä aavikolla seikkailu on sitten väsyttävää hommaa!

We thoroughly enjoyed the trip, the desert landscape was spectacular and I am not at all surprised that this desert is often called the most beautiful desert on Earth. However, our guide was not that great - he seemed pretty shy and not confident with his English, and at every stop our instructions were "go there, take picture, come back." It would have been nice to get a bit more information on whatever it was we were supposed to take pictures of, but in any case it was a really lovely day. At some point we stopped in the shade of a large rock formation, where us tourists got to lie down on a carpet to rest, while our guide prepared us an undeniably delicious lunch. After that we got to take a little nap - travelling around the desert gets really tiring! 

Illaksi palasimme leiriimme, jossa meille oli valmistettu pieni teltta yöksi. Kaikki kerääntyivät leirinuotion ympärille illalliselle, joka tosin tarjoiltiin ainakin tuntia myöhemmin kuin mitä meille kerrottiin - siinä vaiheessa olimme molemmat jo todella nälkäisiä ja väsyneitä ja saaneet ihan tarpeeksemme beduiiniteestä. Ruoka oli tosin hyvää ja sitä oli myös kasvissyöjälle todella riittävästi - buffet-pöytä notkui monenlaisista herkuista. Teetä tarjoiltiin jatkuvalla syötöllä lisää ja syötyämme oli iltaviihteen aika - paikalliset beduiinit esittivät nuotion ympärillä perinteisiä laulujaan. Voi toki olla, että tämä on jossain määrin turisteja varten romantisoitua meininkiä, mutta siinä oli silti oma, erikoinen taianomainen tunnelmansa. Aavikon yö on laskeutunut, tähtitaivas loistaa kirkkaana, leirinuotio roihuaa ja beduiinit laulavat meille vieraalla kielellään... Wadi Rum jäi varmasti mieleeni yhtenä upeimmista kokemistani paikoista. En ole toki kaikkia maailman aavikoita nähnyt, mutta voin helposti uskoa tämän olevan se kaikkein kaunein!

The morning after

By the evening we returned to our camp, where we could call a little tent home for the night. Everybody gathered by the campfire for dinner, which was served at least an hour later than what we had been told - by that time we were both really hungry and tired, and had had just about enough of Bedouin tea. However, the food was really tasty and there was lots of it even for a vegetarian - the buffet table was full of delicious stuff. The tea was being served continuously and after the meal it was time for the entertainment - the local Bedouins were singing their traditional songs by the campfire. Obviously some of this may be a romanticized version of Bedouin life designed for tourists, and yet there was a really special magical atmosphere - the night has fallen over the desert, the stars are shining brightly, the campfire is blazing and the Bedouins are singing in their exotic language... Wadi Rum definitely stays with me as one of the most magnificent places I have ever visited. Sure, I haven't seen all the deserts in the world, but I can believe Wadi Rum is the most beautiful of them all!
