edellisessä postauksessani mainitsinkin, parhaat ajat vierailla Petrassa ovat aikaisin aamulla ja myöhään iltapäivällä - noihin aikoihin lämpötila on siedettävimmillään, ja väkijoukkoja on vähemmän, sillä keskipäivällä päiväretkeläiset Punaisenmeren rantakohteista valloittavat rauniot. Meillä oli kahden päivän pääsylippu Petraan, joten suuntasimme sinne lounaan jälkeen klo 15 tienoilla Wadi Musaan saapumispäivänämme. Tämä postaus kertoo ensimmäisestä päivästämme Petrassa, seuraavassa postauksessa voit lukea toisesta päivästämme Petrassa.

As I mentioned in my previous post, the best times to visit Petra are in the early morning and late afternoon - around those times the temperature is more bearable and it is also less crowded, as around midday the ruins are conquered by the day trippers from the beach resorts around the Red Sea. We had a two day entrance ticket to Petra, so we headed there after lunch around 3pm on the day we arrived in Wadi Nusa. This post is about our first day in Petra, in the next post you can read about our second day in Petra.

Petran sisäänkäynti oli kävelymatkan päässä hotellistamme,
Esperanza Petrasta. Kuten monet tietävät jo ennen visiittiään, Petra kattaa todella suuren alueen ja vaatii paljon kävelyä kohteesta toiseen. Nykyään Petran pääsylippuun sisältyy noin 800 metrin matka hevosella ratsastaen sisäänpääsyportilta kohti varsinaisia nähtävyyksiä, mutta olimme lukeneet, että vaikka ratsastus itsessään onkin ilmainen, sen jälkeen on tapana vaatia aggressiivisesti tuntuvia tippejä. En myöskään ole kovin vakuuttunut siitä, että eläimiä kohdellaan hyvin, joten jätimme mieluummin ratsastuksen väliin ja kävelimme heti alusta asti. Maisemat jylhine vuorineen olivat heti saman tien todella vaikuttavat. Petran kuuluisin näky, Indiana Jones -leffassakin nähty Treasury, on parin kilometrin päässä sisäänkäynnistä ja matkan loppuvaihe kuljetaan huikean kapean kanjonin sisällä, jossa hevosten kapioiden kopse kaikuu kanjonin seinien sisällä ja yhtäkkiä kulkijan eteen avautuu aukio ja uskomattoman upea Treasury. On vaikea käsittää, miten niin hienon yksityiskohtaisesti koristellut pylväät on voitu kaivertaa kivestä muinaisilla työkaluilla. Tämän mykistävän näyn ihailua häiritsi tosin hiukan yli-innokkaiden kauppiaiden myyntipuheet, he kun halusivat ihan välttämättä viedä meidät hevosen selässä näköalapaikalle katsomaan kyseistä näkyä yläilmoista. Hoimme kyllästymiseen asti "no thank you" ja jatkoimme kävelyä kohti amfiteatteria ja Kuninkaiden hautoja, jotka olivat myös kerrassaan mahtava näky - Treasury ei todellakaan ole ainoa näkemisen arvoinen rakennelma Petrassa!

The entrance to Petra was within walking distance from our hotel Esperanza Petra. As many people know already before visiting, Petra covers a vast area and lots of walking from one sight to another is required. Nowadays the entrance ticket includes a short horse ride (about 800 metres from the entrance towards the sights), but we had read that although the ride itself is free, it is customary to demand really hefty tips in a rather aggressive manner after the ride. Besides, I'm really not that convinced that those horses are well-treated, so we rather skipped the horse-back riding and walked the whole way ourselves. The scenery was incredibly impressive right away from the beginning with the imposing mountains. The most famous sight of Petra, Treasury that was also featured in the Indiana Jones movie, is located about 2 kilometres from the entrance and the final bit of the journey goes through a narrow canyon, with the sound of horses' hooves echoing within the canyon walls and all of a sudden the view opens up to reveal the amazingly beautiful Treasury. It is really hard to comprehend how it was possible to carve such intricate patterns out of the rock with primitive tools in the ancient times. The only thing that was making it slightly harder to enjoy this awe-inspiring sight was the overly enthusiastic salesmen, who insisted we should take a horse-back ride up to a view point to see this sight from high up. We just kept saying "no thank you" about a million times and kept walking towards the Royal Tombs, that were certainly also worth seeing - Treasury is by far not the only imposing sight in Petra!

Päätimme suunnata omin jaloin sinne kuuluisalle näköalapaikalle, jonne olisi myyntiheppujen mukaan ollut ihan pakko mennä hevosella. Myönnettäköön, että sinne pitikin kiivetä loputtomia portaita pitkin. Kun sinne viimein n. puolentoista tunnin patikoinnin jälkeen päästiin, kävi ilmi, että näkymä oli ovelasti peitetty teltalla, jonka sisään piti mennä ihailemaan näkyä ja ostaa juotavaa. Ensireaktoni on ärsyyntyä, että miksi tästä nyt pitää vielä erikseen maksaa, mutta toisaalta olipa mukava istahtaa lepuuttamaan jalkoja pehmoiselle patjalle tuoretta granaattiomenamehua maistellen, eikä juoman hinta ollut sen kummempi kuin muuallakaan Petran alueella: 3 dinaaria tuoreesta mehulasillisesta. Sokerina pohjalla teltassa asusti äärimmäisen suloinen kissanpentu, joka poseerasi auliisti tuon mahtavan näköalan edustalla tuoden lisämaustetta kuviin. Alas patikoiminen oli tietenkin paljon helpompaa, eikä siihen mennyt tuntiakaan. Palasimme Treasurylle, kun päivä alkoi olla pulkassa ja väkeä oli paljon vähemmän. Pääsimme istumaan penkille Treasuryn eteen ja saimme istuskella siinä ihan rauhassa lepuuttamassa jalkoja ja ihaillen tuota lumoavaa rakennelmaa ottamatta enää kuvia tai puhumatta mitään. Se oli hyvä hetki se.

We decided to walk up to that famous view point, where according to the sales people it was absolutely necessary to take a horse. I will admit that it involved climbing up seemingly endless stairs. When we finally made it up there, after about 1,5 hours of hiking, it turned out that the view point was very cleverly covered with a tent, where you had to go in and buy a drink in order to enjoy the view. My first reaction to this was to be rather annoyed - why do you have to pay extra for this freaking view - but actually, it was really nice to sit down on a comfy cushion to rest our feet and enjoy a glass of freshly squeezed pomegranate juice while enjoying the view, with the owner of the establishment happily taking pictures for us. Anyway the drink cost the same as elsewhere in Petra area; 3 dinars for a glass. Besides, there was an absolutely adorable kitten living in the tent, who was willing to pose for our pictures with Treasury in the background. Walking down was obviously a lot easier and took us less than an hour. We got back to the Treasury when the day was winding down to the end and there were a lot less people than before. We got to sit on a bench right in front of the Treasury to rest our feet and sit in peace, without taking any more pictures or talking or anything. That was a really good moment.

Lopulta raahauduimme viimeisillä voimillamme takaisin hotellille ylämäkeen. Onneksi olimme varanneet hotellista illallisen, joka osoittautuikin erittäin maukkaaksi - ei olisi millään jaksanut lähteä metsästämään mitään syötävää kylästä. Seuraavassa postauksessa kerron toisesta päivästämme Petrassa!

Finally, with the last bit of our strength, we managed to drag ourselves back up the hill to our hotel. Thankfully we had booked dinner at the hotel, which turned out to be really tasty - we really didn't have the energy to go down to the village to find something to eat. In the next post I will tell about our second day in Petra!
