Montreal, ystävällinen suurkaupunki - Montreal, the Friendly Metropolis

Heti juna-asemalle saapuessamme aistin, että nyt ollaan kiireisessä suurkaupungissa, ensimmäisessä laatuaan tällä reissulla. Kiireisistä ihmismassoista huolimatta Montreal on silti turvallisen ja ystävällisen tuntuinen eikä meidän tarvinnut täälläkään seisoskella kauaa kadunkulmassa karttaa tuijottaen, ennen kuin joku tuli kysymään tarvitsemmeko apua. Löysimme tiemme hostimme Davidin luokse parin metronvaihdon jälkeen ja hänen kämppiksensä Philippe oli jo valmistamassa meille herkullista kasvisateriaa. Ilta vietettiin rattoisasti oluen ja illallisen parissa.

As soon as we arrived at the train station I sensed that this is a busy big city - the first one we have been to on this trip. Despite the hurrying masses of people Montreal still has a friendly and safe vibe and we didn’t have to stand on  the street staring at the map for long before somebody asked if we needed help. We found our host David’s place easily enough after a couple of transfers on the metro and his room mate Philippe was already preparing a delicious vegetarian meal for us. We had a lovely evening together enjoying dinner and beers.

Ensimmäisen Montrealin päivän ohjelma oli suorittaa shoppailua, mikä ei ole meille mikään mieluisa tehtävä, mutta oli pakko saada ostettua läppäri sekä epätoivoisesti tarvitsemiamme kevyempiä kesävaatteita - Kanadan kesä yllätti meidät lämmöllään ja tarvitsimme välttämättä shortseja ja sandaaleja. Montrealissa shoppailu on tähänastisia kaupunkeja helpompaa, sillä ihan keskustassa on eurooppalaiseen tyyliin valtavasti kauppoja ja ostoskeskuksia, toisin kuin Quebec Cityssä ja Halifaxissa, joissa shoppailu keskittyy kaupungin ulkopuolella oleviin ostoskeskuksiin. Shoppailupäivä oli raskas mutta menestyksekäs ja seuraavina päivinä pääsimme keskittymään meille mieluisampiin aktiviteetteihin, eli nähtävyyksien kiertelyyn.

Our first day in Montreal had to spent by shopping, which is not a fun activity for us. However we had to buy a laptop and get some lighter clothes - Canadian summer surprised us with its warmth and we desperately needed a pair of shorts and sandals. In Montreal the shopping was an easier task than in the cities we previously stayed in, as there are vast number of shops and shopping centres right in downtown, similarly than in Europe, whereas in Halifax and Quebec City the shopping opportunities were mainly in malls outside the city. The shopping day was long but successful and the following days we could concentrate on things we like more, such as sightseeing!

Vaikka Montrealin vanha kaupunki ei ole yhtä pittoreski kuin Quebec Cityn, löytyy sieltä silti paljon hienoa arkkitehtuuria. Notre Damen katedraali (pääsymaksu 6 CAD per henkilö) oli yllättävän upea käyntikohde. Paljon katedraaleja nähneenäkin se yllätti pehmeän lilalla pohjavärillään, joka toi mieleen enemmänkin itämaisen sulttaanin palatsin. Saman aukion ympärillä on paljon muita historiallisia rakennuksia, kuten Kanadan ensimmäinen pankki ja ensimmäinen pilvenpiirtäjä. Vanhan sataman ympäristössä pidimme erityisesti Bonsecours Market-kauppahallista, jossa nykyäänkin myydään kaikenlaista tavaraa kultakoruista vaahterasiirappituotteisiin.

Although the old city of Montreal is less picturesque than that of Quebec City’s, you can still find a lot of lovely architecture there. The cathedral of Notre Dame  (entrance fee 6 CAD per person) was surprisingly impressive - although I have visited lots of cathedrals, this one amazed me with its soft lilac undertone which in my mind resembled a palace of a sultan rather than a cathedral. Around the same square there are plenty of other historical buildings, such as Canada’s first bank and the first skyscraper. In the area of the old port we especially liked Bonsecours Market where you can still buy all sorts of goods from golden jewellery to maple syrup products.

Mukava ulkoilualue kaupungissa on St. Lawrence-joen keskellä olevalla saarella sijaitseva Jean Drapeaun puisto, joka on kesäisin suosittu paikallisten temmellyskenttä. Siellä voi pyöräillä, uida tai kävellä saarta ympäri ihaillen joen yli avautuvaa kaupunkimaisemaa. Expoa varten rakennettu Biosphere-museo keskittyy ympäristöasioihin ja on upea näky, vaikkei sisälle menisikään.

Jean Drapeau Park on the island in the middle of St. Lawrence River is a lovely lush place of outdoor enthusiasts. In the summertime the locals gather here to cycle or walk around the island admiring the beautiful city views over the river. The Biosphere Museum, built for the Expo, concentrates on environmental issues and is a spectacular sight, even if you only see it from the outside.

Iltaisin kävimme pariinkin kertaan viihteellä The Gay Villagen alueella, kaupungin sateenkaarialueella, jossa riitti hauskoja karaokebaareja joka lähtöön. Lauantai-iltana puolen yön aikaan kaupungin metrot olivat enemmän täynnä kuin ruuhka-aikaan - kaupunki tuli tosiaan vielä enemmän eloon öisin! Muita mukavia hengailualueita olivat esim. trendikäs Mile End ja Plateau Montreal, josta löytyi vegaaniravintoloita, hippikauppoja ja yleisesti hyviä viboja roppakaupalla. Viimeisenä Montrealin aamunamme ehdimme vielä käydä Philippen kanssa kävelyllä Mount Royalin vuorella, jonka huipulta oli mahtavat näköalat kaupungin yli.

In the evenings we headed out a couple of times to The Gay VIllage, the rainbow area of the city, where fun karaoke bars abound. On a Saturday night around midnight the metros were even more full than at rush hour - the city really came alive at night! Other nice areas to hang out in are for example the trendy Mile End and Plateau Montreal where vegan restaurants, hippie shops and generally good vibes are found all around. Our last morning in Montreal we had time to take a little hike with Philippe to the top of Mount Royal with its great views over the city.

Montreal jäi mieleeni todella kivana miljoonakaupunkina, jossa voisin kuvitella jopa asuvani. Moottoritie (tai junan raiteet) on kuitenkin kuuma ja me jatkoimme matkaa Kanadan pääkaupunkiin!

I found Montreal a really nice metropolis where I could actually imagine living in. However, gotta keep moving so we made our way towards the capital of Canada!
