Etelää kohti - Towards the South of Iceland
Aamulla jätimme Seydisfjordurin söpön satukylän jälkeemme ja suuntasimme kohti etelää. Tällä kertaa ajomatka ei ollut kovin pitkä, mutta edessä oli Ring Roadin ainoa päällystämätön osio, noin 40 kilometriä soratietä. Emme kuitenkaan odottaneet sen olevan hirvittävän jyrkkää vuoristotietä, joksi se osoittautui... siinä sai ajaa todella varovasti kieli keskellä suuta, kun tie oli kuin vuoristorata irtosoralla päällystettynä. Selvisimme kuitenkin ongelmitta, luojalle kiitos pienistä palveluksista.
In the morning we left the cute fairytale village of Seydisfjordur behind and headed towards south of Iceland. This time the drive was not too long but we had the only unpaved bit of the Ring Road to tackle, a good 40 kilometres of gravel ahead of us. However, we did not expect it to be horrifyingly steep and winding mountain road, as it turned out to be... The road was like a rollercoaster covered in lose rough gravel. Thank my lucky stars, we made it without any problems.
Päästyämme jälleen turvalliselle asvaltille pystyimme keskittymään taas maisemien ihailuun. Aina kun yhdenlaiseen mahtavaan näkymään ehtii vähänkään tottua tai turtua, Islanti lyö uuden kortin pöytään. Nyt leukamme loksahtivat mustien hiekkarantojen takia. Pysähtelimme parikin kertaa toinen toistaan komeampien mustien rantojen kohdalla ottamassa kuvia hämmentävän hienoista maisemista sekä lukemattomista linnuista.
As we got back on the safety of tarmac, we could once again concentrate on admiring the magnificent scenery. Whenever you get the tiniest bit used to one type of incredibly beautiful scenery, Iceland pulls out a new card. Now we were awe-struck by the black-sand beaches. We stopped a couple of times to take pictures of the amazing beaches with their innumerable birds.
Seuraava yöpymiskohteemme oli Höfn, jonka odotin olevan vilkkaan turistikeskuksen. Ainakin tänä leppoisana lauantaipäivänä kadut olivat tyhjillään eikä koko kylässä näyttänyt olevan kuin kolme ravintolaa söpön sataman tienoilla. Päätimme poikkeuksellisesti syödä lounaamme ravintolassa ja juoda jopa oluet - ensimmäistä kertaa Islannin loman aikana. Valitsimme niistä kolmesta ravintolasta söpöimmän ja nautimme kieltämättä maukkaan aterian hyvän oluen kera - yksi ruokalaji sekä yksi olut per pää tuli maksamaan 7800 ISK. Ei todellakaan budjetti kestäisi tällaista revittelyä joka päivä, mutta tulipa vaihtelua purkkiruoille ja pikanuudeleille.
Our next accommodation place was in Höfn which I expected to be a lively touristy place. At least on this pleasant Saturday it was completely dead with empty streets and the whole village seemed to have just three restaurants by the cute little harbour We decided to make an exception - have lunch at a restaurant and even go as far as having a beer for the first time on our Iceland holiday. We chose the cutest of the three restaurants and enjoyed a nice meal with a good beer. One course and one meal per person came to cost us 7800 ISK. The budget could certainly not stand such extravagance every day but at least it made a nice change from canned food and instant noodles!
Höfnin kylässä ei oikein mitään nähtävää ole, joten vietimme illan rennosti mukavassa majatalossamme. Kävimme kävelyllä kiertämässä niemeä, jossa näkyi paljon lintuja ja kaukaisuudessa kurkisteli Vatnajökullin jäätikkö, jota pääsimmekin tutkiskelemaan lähietäisyydeltä seuraavana päivänä. Se osoittautuikin yhdeksi tämän reissun ehdottomista kohokohdista!
In the village of Höfn there is not that much to do or see, so we spent the evening chilling in our comfortable guest house. We took a walk along the peninsula where you can see lots of birds, as well as glimpses of the mighty Vatnajäkull glacier in the distance. We got to see the glacier much closer up the following day, which turned out to be one of the absolute highlights of the trip!
