Päivä Gozolla - Gozo in a Day

Kolmas osa juttusarjaani "Maltan monet kasvot", jossa kerron mielestäni parhaista käyntikohteista keskittyen eri kiinnostuksenaiheisiin.

Third part in my series "The Many Faces of Malta" where I share my best tips for different interests. This time we are looking at Malta's little sister island Gozo. While Gozo might not be located far from the main island - less than half an hour's ferry ride away - it is worlds apart. When talking about Gozo people always mention it is quieter and calmer than island of Malta and it is the closest thing to countryside Malta can claim to have. I would definitely recommend spending at least two days in Gozo if time permits as it is a charming island with lots to see. However most tourists only give Gozo one day and it is perfectly doable as a day trip from Malta if you are short on time. If you are content with a quicker visit still, you can take a boat trip with a stop on Gozo - check out my post on the boat trips here.

Gozo Ferry

Getting to and around Gozo

The ferry ride from Malta only takes around 20 minutes but be aware that the ferries leave from Cirkewwa, the northernmost corner of the island. If you are coming by bus, be prepared for a long and painfully slow journey taking easily 1,5 hours from Valletta and over an hour from Sliema, depending of course on traffic. If you are staying in the northern part of the island, for example St. Paul's Bay or Bugibba, it makes the journey considerably quicker.

The ferries run depending on the season about every 45 minutes (check the timetables here) and there is no need to buy the tickets beforehand - in fact, when leaving Malta you don't even need a ticket as you will only pay on the way back from Gozo. So if you really want to save your money, you can get to Gozo for free and just stay there for the rest of your life!

If you only have a day, I don't recommend being on the mercy of the public transport system - the buses run considerably less frequently than in Malta (about once an hour or so) and the connections are frustratingly impractical. You are guaranteed to spend more time waiting for a bus or sitting on a bus than actually seeing or experiencing anything interesting. Hiring a car or a scooter makes sense as there is much less traffic in Gozo than in Malta and it is notably easier to navigate, making driving less of a batshit-crazy idea than in Malta. We rented a scooter for two days from Mgarr Tourist Services who also hire cars and offer other services from their office, conveniently located right at the ferry harbour.

If you prefer not to drive yourself, a good option is taking the Hop on Hop Off Bus which will take you from one sight to another with minimum hassle. You can buy the ticket at the ferry harbour and off-season you might even get a discount when buying direct, so there is no need to buy it in advance online or from a travel agent.

Mitä Gozolla voi nähdä tai tehdä?

Mitäpä muutakaan, kuin historiallisia, uskonnollisia ja luonnonnähtävyyksiä! Niitähän ovat Maltan saaret täynnä.

Historiasta kiinnostuneille Gozon huippukohde on Xaghran kylässä sijaitsevat megaliittiset temppelit nimeltään Ġgantija.

What to see and do in Gozo

Why, we are still on the Maltese islands so what do you think? Historical, cultural and natural sights of course!

For those interested in history, one must-see destination is the megalithic temples located in the village of Xaghra, Ggantija. These temples were built more than 5500 years ago, making them older than the pyramids - in fact they are reputed to be the second oldest man-made religious structures in the world. I have said it before about the temples in Malta - yes, to the untrained eye they might look just like piles of rock, but they are really old and historically significant rocks! At the temples you can buy a combo ticket which allows access also to the Ta' Kola windmill nearby as well as several little museums in the capital Victoria. Personally I though the windmill was pretty cool but I would skip the museums if I did it again as they were hardly awe-inspiring.

You have surely seen the pictures of the amazing Azure Window in any tourist brochure or postcard of Gozo. Apparently they have also filmed some part of the Game of Thrones series here but I wouldn't know anything about that as I have never seen an episode of it.  In any case, this is totally unmissable a sight in Gozo and you never know how long it will still remain standing - the experts fear its collapse due to natural erosion may be imminent. Warning signs seem to do little to deter daring tourists to walk on the arch itself which may further speed up the inevitable. Therefore I don't recommend walking on it - admire it from a distance, eh? Right next to the Azure Window you will also find the inland sea which is a lagoon filled by sea water. From here you can take an exciting boat trip through the tunnel to the sea.

The capital of Gozo, Victoria (also known by its old Arabic name Rabat) is the centre of the island, the place where all the roads will take you. For a tourist there are several interesting things to see, namely the Cittadella looming impressively above the town. Wandering along the narrow streets of Cittadella you could easily believe you have been transported centuries back in time. The fortress, located on top of a hill, affords wonderful views over the island. The centre of Victoria has an abundance of touristy shops where you can taste and buy different local products from cheese and olive oil to liquer. You will also find more silver jewellery and lace table cloths than you could possibly need. There are also pleasant squares with coffee shops, restaurants and bars to cater for all needs.

If you are less into cultural sights, there is always the beach! The only proper sandy beach in Gozo, Ramla Bay, is a beautiful sight with its red-golden sand that makes it unique in Maltese islands. It gets very busy during the summer as it is a favourite both among the Gozitans and the visitors from Malta.

Päivässä ei juuri tämän enempää ehdi tehdä. Haluatko tätä lisää? Ei ihme! Pysy linjoilla seuraavaa osaa varten - mitä tehdä toisena päivänä Gozolla!

In a day that's pretty much all you will have time for. Want more of Gozo? Can't blame you! Stay tuned for part 2 - what to do if you have two days in Gozo!
