Maltan rannat - The Beaches of Malta
Toinen osa juttusarjaani "Maltan monet kasvot", jossa kerron mielestäni
parhaista käyntikohteista keskittyen eri kiinnostuksenaiheisiin. Tällä kertaa keskityn (vuodenajasta huolimatta) monien turistien lempiaiheeseen eli biitseihin. Tule mukaan nojatuolimatkalle! Listaukseni ei toki käsitä jokaikistä rantaa, mutta näistä minulla on omakohtaisia kokemuksia.
Second part in my series "The Many Faces of Malta" where I share my best tips for different interests. This time I concentrate on the favourite topic of many tourists; the beaches in Malta (ignoring the fact that the beach season is coming to an end for this year). Come along! Disclaimer: my list is by no means exhaustive but covers the beaches that I have first-hand experience of.
Hiekkarannat
Monille Maltan vierailijoille voi tulla yllätyksenä hiekkarantojen suorastaan huutava puute. Kyllä saarelta toki niitäkin löytyy, mutta rajallisesti.
Maltan hiekkarannat ovat keskittyneet lähinnä saaren pohjoisosiin. Saaren suurin hiekkaranta löytyy Melliehan kylästä ja tunnetaan nimellä Ghadira Bay. Tämä ranta on lähimpänä sitä mielikuvaa, mitä vaikkapa Espanjan Costa del Solilla vierailija hellii mielessään biitsistä: iso(hko), täynnä aurinkotuoleja ja -varjoja, löytyy muutamia ruokakojuja ja kioskeja sekä vuokrattavaksi vaikkapa surffilautaa. Toisin sanoen täysin turistibiitsi. Sinne on hotellisi sijainnista riippuen suhteellisen helppo päästä, sillä monet bussit ajavat ihan rannan vierestä ja ranta on kävelyetäisyydellä paristakin resortista ja itse Melliehan kylästä. Huono puoli on sitten tietenkin ihmismassat, mutta se on kieltämättä ongelma melkeinpä joka kohteessa Maltalla. Jos et tykkää olla monien turistien ympäröimä, en suosittele Ghadira Bayta.Toisaalta, jos arvostat eloisaa rantaa jossa on paljon palveluita ja jonne on helppo päästä, tämä on sinun paikkasi Maltalla.
Golden Bay on toinen suosittu ranta, joka sijaitsee Melliehan alueella mutta eri puolella niemeä. Golden Bay on melko kaukana mistään kylästä ja ainoa tapa olla kävelyetäisyydellä rannasta on majoittua Radisson-hotellissa, jonka asiakkailla on oma pieni privaattiosio rannasta. Tämäkin ranta on kesäisin hyvin täynnä ihmisiä, mutta empiirisen kokemukseni mukaan sanoisin sen olevan enemmän suosiossa maltalaisten kuin turistien keskuudessa. Myös Golden Bayssa voi vuokrata aurinkotuoleja, järjestää veneretkiä jne. ja löytää syödäkseen ja juodakseen. Bussilla paikalle pääsee esim. Vallettasta ja Sliemasta, mutta matka on pitkä ja tuskaisen hidas.
Melkeinpä Golden Bayn vierestä löytyy Riviera Bay (Ghajn Tuffieha), joka on hieman hankalammin lähestyttävä, vähemmän kaupallinen ja luultavasti näistä syistä hitusen vähemmän täyteenahdettu kuin edellä mainitut. Tänne päästäkseseen autoton joutuu kävelemään Golden Bayn bussiasemalta ehkä kymmenisen minuuttia, jonka jälkeen edessä on pitkät portaat jyrkänteen päältä alas rannalle. Tässä vaiheessa voi toki jäädä ihan portaiden lähituntumaan, mutta me yleensä kävelemme vielä muutaman minuutin rannan toiseen päähän, jossa on tavallisesti väljempää - useimmille ihmisille tämä näyttää olevan liian vaivalloista. Lukuunottamatta portaiden vieressä olevaa ravintolaa rannalla ei ole mitään kioskia tai ruokakojua, joten omat eväät ovat tarpeelliset. Riviera Bay on paikallisten suosikki ja itsekin nimeäisin sen Maltan parhaaksi hiekkarannaksi - toki elokuisena sunnuntaina jopa tämä paikka käy ahtaaksi, mutta silti vähemmän ahtaaksi kuin muut mainitsemani rannat. Huomioi muuten, että jos jatkat kävelyä vielä seuraavaan poukamaan, pääset pienelle nudistirannalle - saatat siis nähdä enemmänkin maisemia kuin mitä halusit.
Sandy Beaches
Many first-time visitors to Malta may be surprised by the lack of sandy beaches. Sure, the island has some, but they are few and far between.
Malta's sandy beaches are mainly located in the north part of the island. The largest sandy beach is found in the village of Mellieha and known as Ghadira Bay. This beach is closest to what you might expect if you are used to for example Costa Del Sol in Spain - big(ish), full of sun-chairs and umbrellas for hire, a few food stalls and kiosks as well as possibility to hire for example surf boards. In other words, a totally touristic beach. Depending on the location of your hotel this beach is pretty easy to access as there are several buses driving right by the beach and it is actually walking distance from several tourist resorts as well as the village of Mellieha. The downside is of course that it gets really crowded, but honestly this is a problem in general in pretty much any nice spot in Malta. The bottom line is that if you like an easily accessible convenient beach with services, Ghadira Bay is your place in Malta. If you don't like to be surrounded by herds of other tourists, not so much.
Golden Bay is another popular beach, also in the north of the island but on the other side of the peninsula. Located pretty far from any village, the only way to stay within walking distance of Golden Bay is to stay at the Radisson Hotel whose guests have a little private section of the beach reserved for them. Also this beach gets extremely crowded in the summer time but according to my empiric research it's more popular among the Maltese than the tourists. Also in Golden Bay you can rent sun-chairs and umbrellas, arrange boat trips and buy food and drinks. You can get there by bus for instance from Valletta or Sliema, but it is a long and painfully slow journey.
Almost next to Golden Bay you can find the local favourite Riviera Bay (Ghajn Tuffieha) which is a bit less accessible, less commercial and probably for these reasons slightly less crowded than the above-mentioned ones. To get here (without a car) you need to walk a good ten minutes from the Golden Bay bus stop, then take the long stairs down from the top of the cliff. You can of course settle down right there by the stairs but we normally take a few extra minutes to walk through the beach to the other end which is less crowded - I suppose most people consider this to be too much trouble. Apart from the restaurant located next to the stairs there are no services here so you need to bring your own food and drink. As many locals, I would also name this my favourite sandy beach in Malta - sure, on a Sunday in August even this place gets overpopulated but still much less so than the aforementioned beaches. By the way, it is worth mentioning that if you keep walking to the next bay, you will reach a small clothing-optional beach - you might see more of the scenery than you wish.

Muistan ensimmäisenä päivänä Maltalle saavuttuani järkyttyneeni, kun näin ihmisiä makoilemassa paljaalla kalliolla ottamassa aurinkoa. Se näytti minusta ihan säälittävältä, olinhan tottunut Espanjan loputtomiin hiekkarantoihin. Olen tähän kuitenkin sopeutunut, sillä suurin osa rannoista on kivikkoisia tai kalliota ja siinäkin on itse asiassa hyviä puolia. Epämukavampaahan se on kuin hiekalla makoilu, mutta et ainakaan vie hiekkaa kotiisi iholla ja hiuksissa ja vesi on todella kristallinkirkasta, kun ei ole hiekkaa samentamassa vedenalaisia näkymiä.Tästä syystä snorklaajat ja sukeltajat rakastavat Maltan vesiä.
Slieman kallioranta on suurelta osin soveliasta uimiseen, erityisesti Exiles, Qui-Si-Sana ja Tignen alueet. Vaikka porukkaa on täälläkin runsaasti, rantaviiva on niin pitkä että yleensä tilaa riittää ihan hyvin kaikille eikä tunne itseään silliksi purkissa. Joissain paikoissa on tarjolla rantatuoleja, joka toki tekee kalliolla paistattelusta paljon mukavampaa. Näillä alueilla on paljon sekä paikallisia että turisteja, jotka tykkäävät vilkkaasta ja eloisasta biitsistä.
Sinisen Luolan eli Blue Grotton alue on suosittu erityisesti sukeltajien joukossa, mutta siellä näkee myös paljon ihmisiä uimassa ja ottamassa aurinkoa. Paikan vetonaula on tietenkin itse sininen luola, jossa voi käydä veneretkellä. Kannattaa kuitenkin varata vähän aikaa myös auringonpalvontaan ja virkistävään pulahdukseen epätodellisen sinisenä hohtavaan veteen.
Huomattavasti hankalampipääsyinen, mutta vaivan arvoinen, on St. Peter´s Pool Marsaxlokkissa. Tänne on autottoman hankala päästä, sillä kävelymatkaa on Marsaxlokkin kylästä ainakin 4km, mikä paahtavassa helteessä voi tuntua liian suurelta ponnistukselta. Kaiken lisäksi sinne johtava tie on niin heikossa kunnossa, että autoilevallekin se on jonkinlainen haaste. St. Peter´s Pool on kuitenkin yksi Maltan kauneimmista uimapaikoista ja alueena niin iso, ettei se tunnu liian täyteen ahdetulta edes kesän huippusesonkina, vaikka se paikallisten suosikki onkin. Paikka, josta hurjapäät hyppivät kalliolta alas mereen (en suosittele, ellet tiedä mitä teet - silloin tällöin tämä johtaa vakaviin vammoihin) voi olla kesäisenä sunnuntaina melko vilkas, mutta jos haluaa hiljaisempaa aluetta sitä taatusti löytyy. Epätodelliselta tuntuva maisema tuo mieleen kuun kamaran.
Rocky Beaches
I remember my first day in Malta, when I looked, in shock, at the people lying on the bare rocks sunbathing. This seemed completely pathetic to me, having been accustomed to the endless sandy beaches of Costa del Sol. By now I'm used to it though as most beaches around Malta are rocky and in fact there are good sides to that as well. Sure, it's a lot less comfortable to lie on than sand but at least you are not bringing any sand with you home on your skin or hair and in the absence of sand the water is really crystal-clear. That is why snorkelers and divers really love it in Malta.
Much of the rocky coast line of Sliema is suitable for sunbathing and swimming, in particular the areas of Exiles, Qui-Si-Sana and Tigne. Even though there are lots of people here as well, the coast line is so long that it doesn't get too crowded and you don't feel like a sardine in a can. Some places offer deck chairs which makes sunbathing on the rocks considerably more comfortable and there are lots of restaurants and cafes around to take care of your needs. These beaches fill up with both tourists and locals who enjoy a lively busy beach with easy access.
Blue Grotto area is especially popular among divers but you also see a lot of people there just sunbathing and swimming. The attraction here is of course the Blue Grotto itself that you can visit by a boat trip, but once you are here it is worthwhile to reserve some time for sunbathing on the rock and a refreshing dip into the surreally blue water.
Considerably less accessible, but well worth the trouble, is St. Peter's Pool in Marsaxlokk. It is challenging to get to without a car as the walking distance from the village of Masaxlokk is at least 4 kilometres, which may feel a bit overwhelming in the baking heat. Apart from that, the road leading there is so rough that even with a car it can feel challenging. However St. Peter's Pool is one of Malta's most beautiful swimming spots which covers such a large area that it doesn't get too crowded even in the height of summer, despite its popularity with the locals. The spot where the young and the care-free dive into the water from high up on the rocks (I don't recommend to do that unless you know the area - accidents and injuries are common) gets busy in the summer but if you want some solitude, you are sure to find it by walking just a couple of minutes. The surreal scenery evokes images of the surface of the moon.
