Pikkureissu Pohjois-Italiaan Osa 1: Torino - A Short Trip to Northern Italy Part 1: Turin

Italy is sort of a big brother to Malta and it seems that in particular Sicily is the place for Maltese people to go on holiday - sometimes it feels as if it is the only place they go on holiday. We have not visited Sicily yet but there is no doubt that we will at some point. As already planned before moving here, we will be visiting different parts of Italy since it is usually the cheapest destination from here. For October we found a good deal on Ryanair going to Turin (I like the Italian name Torino much more, it sounds more beautiful! so I am stubbornly using that name also when speaking English) and coming back from Milan so we decided to explore a bit of Northern Italy first.

Me at River Po

Saavuimme Torinoon aamuvarhain, joten meillä oli aikaa tapettavaksi ennen kuin voimme mennä hostimme Veronican luo, koska hän pääsi töistä kotiin klo 14. Torinossa on helppo kävellä paikasta toiseen lyhyiden etäisyyksien vuoksi, joten lähdimme kävellen Porta Nuovan rautatieasemalta kohti keskustaa. Reitti Veronican kotia kohti meni kaupungin pääasiallisen shoppailualueen Via Roman läpi, ohittaen Palazzo Reale-palatsin kohti Po-jokea. Matkan varrella ihailimme kaunista kaupunkia kauniine asukkaineen.

We arrived in Torino bright and early and had some time to kill before heading to our host Veronica's place as she was going to be home at 2pm. Torino is a wonderfully walkable town so we started walking into the centre from the Porta Nuova railway station. The route towards Veronica's place went through the main shopping area Via Roma, past the Palazzo Reale and towards the River Po. What a beautiful town with beautiful people. Unsurprisingly it was quite a bit colder than in Malta (temperatures around 13C with some rain) which made hanging out outdoors slightly less appealing. We had a master plan of spending the morning in the National Cinema Museum to keep warm and dry while exploring one of the main sights in Torino. However we had not taken into account the fact that they are closed on Tuesday which was the day of our arrival. Just goes to show that you should not assume all the museums are closed on Mondays just because many of them are. Oh well, plan B then - we headed across the River Po to see the impressive church called Gran Madre di Dio where we could sit down and rest our feet after walking across town. As the lunch time was getting nearer we resolved to spend the remaining hour before our rendez-vous in a - well, what do you think - pizzeria! Obviously you cannot go to Italy and not eat pizza. There is definitely something about the real Italian pizza that just cannot be replicated outside of Italy.

Piazetta Reale

Then we met Veronica, who turned out to be just a lovely as we expected and she volunteered to show us around in Torino. We backtracked to the Palazzo Reale which was well worth the visit, even though the ticket at €12.00 per person was not cheap. The palace was huge, each room more splendid than the last with incredibly lavish decorations. The photographer had a field day, so to speak. After spending quite a bit of time at the palace, we headed out to a very fancy-looking cafe for an espresso - such a place that I would not have dared to even enter if it wasn't for Veronica advising us that the coffee only costs €1.00 when standing by the bar (as is typical in Italy, sitting down would increase the price three -or fourfold). That was a lovely coffee, I won't argue with that! Now caffeine-charged, we popped into the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist where the shroud of Turin is kept. You can't actually see the shroud itself as it is kept hidden for conservation and is only displayed at certain times of the year. However you can see a copy of it on display as well as a photography negative where you can see the "face of Jesus" more clearly. Even though we are not religious, it was an interesting place to visit.

Torinolla on kiva vaihtoehto-vibat, joista tykkäsin kovasti.

At the fancy cafe with Veronica

We spent the rest of the evening wandering around the streets of this charming hip town. The town is full of cool bars, cute little shops selling all sorts of random items and hipster-looking people. It was funny to see so many bars and cafes and even gelato places advertising vegan options - I didn't expect that. Torino has a nice alternative vibe to it that I enjoyed a lot.

Vaatteita. Siinäpä se iltapäivä hujahtikin iloisena shoppaillessa. Illalliseksi nautimme tyypilliset torinolaiset farinatat hyvän paikallisen valkoviinin kera.

Se siitä, Torino - seuraavana aamuna (klo 6 tienoilla, koska totta kai aikaisemmat junaliput olivat halvimmat!) hyppäsimme junaan kohti Milanoa jatkamaan Pohjois-Italian löytöretkeämme!

Very comfy way of watching movies

Gina on the top of Mole Antonelliana

As we had missed out on the Cinema Museum the day before, we made up for it the second day. The building housing the museum is a sight in itself - Mole Antonelliana is a major landmark and apparently currently the tallest museum in the world. You can take the panoramic lift up to the top to take in the lovely views over Torino. The combo ticket of the museum and the lift was €14.00 - not cheap but totally worth it. The museum itself was really really cool, one of the most fun museums I have ever been to. We managed to spend probably about three hours there but I could have stayed even longer if we didn't have other stuff to do. Mainly lunch, for it was pasta time! After lunch we did something very untypical of us. Oh yes we did. We went shopping. For clothes. That's how we spent most of the afternoon, shopping away happily. For dinner we enjoyed a typical Turin farinata with some delightful local wine.

That was Torino for us - the following morning we took the train to Milan (at around 6am - that was the cheapest ticket of course) to continue our exploration of Northern Italy!
