Osa Kuusikymmentäseitsemän – Part Sixty-Seven: Lake Inle

Matka rauhallisen kauniille Inle-järvelle on useimpien Myanmarin kävijöiden listalla.

Traveling to the serenely beautiful Lake Inle is on the list for most people visiting Myanmar. We took the 8-hour journey from Bagan with a minibus that was relatively comfortable. Sure, in this heat it would have been nice to have properly working air-conditioning, but it was bearable. We bought the bus tickets through our guest house in Bagan which was as far as I can see the only way of booking them – these minivan operators don’t exactly have websites and there is nothing resembling a bus station in Bagan. It was really handy that we were able to change the tickets for a different date just a couple of hours before departure, when sickness prevented us from travelling on the intended date.

Our transport around Nyaungshwe

Local ladies on the lake (note the buffalo in the background!)

At this stage of the trip we were taking it pretty easy – for once we hadn’t booked any accommodation in advance, as our guide in Bagan said his friend in Nyaungshwe (the little town which works as a base for visiting the lake, with plenty of accommodation and other tourist services) could pick us up from the bus, show us a couple of hotels that we can choose from and also help us organize a boat trip on the lake etc. Obviously he would be getting commissions from the hotels and so on but we would still get cheaper accommodation this way than booking online. Sure, why not – that sounds easy and it proved to be fine. The guy picked us up from the bus with a kind of a tuk-tuk (it was a mix between a motorcycle and a pick-up van), took us to a couple of hotels that we could choose from and we agreed that he will come to pick us up the following morning for a boat trip on the lake. We paid 30 000 kyats (around 30 euros) for a private boat for the whole day going to all the attractions. He also took us to buy our bus tickets to the next destination.

Koska käytännöllisesti katsoen kaikki turistit täällä tekevät näitä veneretkiä, järvellä on paljon trafiikkia, mutta toisaalta se on niin iso alue, ettei se tunnu mitenkään liian täyteen ahdetulta. Aamulla oli yllättävän vilpoisaa – muutenhan Myanmarissa on koko ajan ollut ihan järjettömän kuuma, täällä on sen verran viileämpää että suurimman osan aikaa on ihan miellyttävä lämpötila, aamuvarhain veneellä kovaa vauhtia mennessä oli jopa hupparille käyttöä. Järvi oli kaunis näky heijastaen ympäröivät metsät pinnallaan ja paikalliset kalastajat lisäsivät maisemaan oman pikantin lisänsä. He ovat kuuluisia perinteisestä kalastusmetodistaan: he seisovat veneessä soutaen jalallaan, pitäen molemmat kätensä vapaina verkkojen tai katiskan käyttöä varten.
Farmers working on their floating vegetable gardens

Making traditional parasols

As practically all the tourists here do a boat trip, there is plenty of traffic on the lake – however it’s such a vast lake that it never feels too crowded. In the morning it was surprisingly chilly – otherwise it’s been infernally hot all the time in Myanmar, but here around the lake the temperature was most of the time pretty pleasant. I actually needed to wear a hoodie when driving on full speed on the boat along the canal. The lake is a spectacularly beautiful sight with its serene waters reflecting the surrounding forests and the local fishermen added to the picturesque scenery. They are renowned for their unique fishing methods: they row with one foot, standing up in the boat, keeping both hands free for manipulating the nets or the fish trap. The traditional fish trap is made of bamboo and net and it is an interesting sight in itself. Our boat driver stopped near the fishermen to allow us to take pictures. Then we continued onto the floating villages around the lake. Many of the inhabitants live literally on the lake in extremely simple bamboo houses on stilts. From your door you can hop onto the boat to visit a neighbour or pop into the local supermarket. A lot of the people are fishermen or farmers, whose vegetable crops float in the lake on top of piles of weed collected from the bottom of the lake. Another source of income these days are the tourist dollars that buy handicrafts of the local people; you can visit lots of different work shops where they make silver jewellery, parasols made of bamboo and locally hand-made paper, weavings of silk or lotus etc. Everything is made by hand, using very simple tools. It was really fascinating to see how the local people live and work. We also had lunch in one of the many floating restaurants in the area, where food was luckily not outrageously expensive, if not particularly amazing either.
Young monks playing in the canal

In Myanmar, you cannot avoid visiting some temples and monasteries. The boat also took us to the village of Inthei to see countless ancient pagodas. The trip along the narrow canal was interesting in itself and as we passed a monastery, we saw a group of little monks frolicking around in the canal. The sweaty walk up to the main pagoda was tough going, also as it included dodging dozens of souvenir sales people. It was worth the climb though as the temple and the surrounding stupas were an awe-inspiring view - even though in parts of the temple, according to the sign "ladies are prohibited". We also visited the so called Jumping Cat monastery, so named as there are plenty of cats living there and a monk had apparently taught some of them to jump through hoops. Unfortunately this doesn’t happen anymore, as we were told the monk in question had died and nobody else is teaching the cats any acrobatics anymore. There are still lots of felines, none of them were jumping around though.

Ancient stupas in Inthei

Me harkitsimme jotain sellaista, mutta luovuimme ajatuksesta osittain ajanpuutteen, osittain edelleen heikohkon kuntomme takia. Vielä on yksi kohde Myanmarissa edessä matkan varrella takaisin Yangoniin – Bago.

The lake is really beautiful and it was fascinating to see the local life-style. To be perfectly honest, it was also fun to see something else but pagodas and temples for a change, as impressive as they are! As elsewhere in Myanmar, also here we felt like celebrities, what with the locals always greeting us so happily, their initially timid smiles turning into excited beaming when we return the greeting. When going back to Europe, I’m going to feel really odd when the strangers on the street are not waving and smiling at me all the time. In my opinion one day at Inle Lake is enough, unless you want to do some hiking in the area. We had considered something like that but gave it up partly due to lack of time, partly due to us still not feeling 100% well. Now there is still one more destination ahead on the way back to Yangon; Bago.
