Upeita maisemia ja luolia Phong Nha-Ke Bang Kansallispuistossa - Amazing Scenery and Caves in Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park

Nautittuamme pari päivää keisarillisen kauniista Huen kaupungista suuntasimme vaihteeksi luontokohteeseen, nimittäin Phong Nha-Ke Bangin kansallispuistoon, joka tunnetaan erikoisesti luolistaan. Tältä alueelta löytyy melko hiljattain löydetty maailman suurin luola, Son Doong, jonne myös pääsisi vierailemaan - kunhan pulittaa 3 000 USD ja odottaa pari vuotta, sinne on nimittäin kahden vuoden jonotusaika. Meillä ei ihan riittänyt budjetti eikä aika tähän luolaan, joten suuntasimme muutamaan muuhun alueen kymmenistä luolista. Yövyimme pari yötä hyvin simppelissä ja edullisessa majatalossa Son Tracin kylässä, joka oli viehättävän rauhallinen pikkukylä - mukavaa vaihtelua liikenteentäyteisiin suurkaupunkeihin.

After enjoying a couple of days in the imperial city of Hue we headed for a change back to nature - to Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, known in particular for its caves. Here is where you find the rather recently discovered Son Doong, the biggest cave in the world, which you can also visit - as long as you are willing to pay 3 000 USD and wait for a couple of years, as their waiting list is around two years. We didn't quite have the budget nor the time for it, so we headed to see some other caves, as there are dozens of caves in the area. We chose the little village of Son Trac as our base and stayed in a very simple and affordable guest house. It was really nice to stay in a quiet village after all the traffic-choked mega-cities.

Olimme varanneet yhden päivän retken Tu Lan -luolan alueelle Oxalis-firman kautta hintaan 1 800 000 dongia per henkilö, eli noin 72 euroa. Summa tuntui hurjalta, mutta kokemus oli ehdottomasti sen arvoinen! Yksi tämän alueen valttikorteista on se, että Kong: Skull Island -elokuvan kohtauksia on kuvattu täällä. En ota kantaa kyseisen elokuvan meriitteihin, mutta maisemat ovat kyllä sen verran hienot, että en ihmettele alueen valintaa elokuvan taustalle. Meidät tultiin hakemaan hotellilta sovitusti ja ajettiin noin puolentoista tunnin päähän Tan Hoa -kylään, josta patikointi ensin pienten karstivuorien ympäröimien viljemien ja myöhemmin viidakon läpi alkoi. Patikointia oli yhteensä noin yhdeksän kilometriä, eli mistään kovin pitkästä vaelluksesta ei ollut kyse, mutta kuumankosteissa olosuhteissa se oli ihan riittävästi. Oli helpotus päästä viileyteen ensimmäisen luolan sisälle, joka tunnetaan nimellä Rat Cave - onneksi siellä ei kuitenkaan ole rottia, vaikka lentäviä rottia eli lepakoita siellä kyllä riitti. Kuljimme oppaan johdolla ihmettelemässä kivimuodostelmia ja ryömimme välillä hyvinkin pienistä koloista, joten kovin ahtaanpaikankammoisille tyypeille tätä reissua ei voi suositella. Jatkoimme patikkamatkaa kohti Hung Thon -luolaa, jossa virtaa maanalainen joki. Hyppäsimme jokeen vaatteet päällä ja kengät jalassa ja uimme noin 50 metrin matkan vain otsalamppujemme valaisemassa luolassa - se oli todella hauska ja vähän jännittävä kokemus. Päädyimme To Mo -laaksoon, jossa meitä odotti lounas (kevätkääryleitä sekä liha- että vegeversioina) ja meillä oli vapaata aikaa uiskennella lammessa, ennen kuin aloitimme paluumatkan - eli uimme jälleen luolan läpi joessa ja patikoimme takaisin samaa reittiä. Päästyämme takaisin alkupisteeseen hienon päivän kruunasi hintaan kuuluva kylmä juoma. Tämä oli ehdottomasti yksi Vietnamin matkan huippukohdista, ja kenties yksi hienoimmista jutuista, mitä olimme koskaan tehneet!

We had reserved Tu Lan 1-day experience from Oxalis at the cost of 1 800 000 dong (about 72 euro) per person. While the price seemed very high, it was definitely worth every dong! One of the things this area is known for is that some scenes for the movie Kong: Skull Island were filmed here. I won't comment on the merits of that particular movie, but the scenery was so incredible that I can well understand why they would have chosen this place for the film. We were picked up from our guest house as agreed and driven about 1,5 hours to the village of Tan Hoa, where the hike first through the  fields surrounded by little mountains and later on jungle started. We hiked altogether about nine kilometres, so it was not massively long, but in the relentless heat it was quite enough. It was a relief to reach the coolness of the first cave we explored - Rat Cave, which despite its name luckily does not have rats. There are the flying rats, though, as the cave hosts a massive bat colony. We walked around the cave with the guide, amazed by the rock formations, scrambling through some pretty tight spots at times, so this tour cannot be recommended for people with claustrophobic tendencies. After the cave exploration we continued the hike to the next cave, Hung Thon, a wet cave with an underground river. We jumped in with all our clothes and shoes and swam through the cave about 50 metres until reaching the To Mo valley, where the lunch (Vietnamese spring rolls with meat and veggie versions) was awaiting us. After lunch we had time to swim before starting our journey back the same way we came - first swimming through the cave and hike back. Once we got back to square one, our experience was finalized with a cold drink included in the price. This was definitely one of the highlights of our trip to Vietnam, and actually one of the best things we ever did!

Meillä oli vielä yksi aamupäivä aikaa Son Tracissa, ja arvoimme aikamme mitä muuta luolaa kävisimme katsomassa. Paradise Cave -luolaa kehutaan kaikkein hienoimmaksi, mutta sinne päästäksemme olisimme joutuneet vuokraamaan moottoripyörän, joten päädyimme helpoimpaan vaihtoehtoon: Phong Nha -luolaan, jonne pääsee vain veneellä. Veneet lähtevät Phong Nha Caves Tour Centeristä, joka oli noin 10 minuutin kävelymatkan päässä majatalostamme. Venematkan voi jakaa korkeintaan 10 hengen kesken - me onnistuimme lyöttäytymään neljän saksalaisen mukaan, joten veneessämme oli kuusi henkeä sekä saksalaisten palkkaama opas. Näin ollen maksoimme veneestä ja sisäänpääsystä kahteen luolaan yhteensä 12 euroa per henkilö. Mekin saimme siinä siivellä vähän opastusta, vaikka tarkoitus oli vain jakaa venekyyti. Meidän piti kuitenkin pysytellä yhdessä, sillä ryhmän pitää mennä samalla veneellä myös takaisin. Pääsimme näkemään samalla reissulla kaksi luolaa: ensin Thien Son -luolan, jonne piti kiivetä 330 askelmaa jyrkkiä portaita (helle teki tästäkin paljon raskaampaa) ja jälkeenpäin veneellä itse Phong Nha -luolan. Ilmeisesti monet eivät jaksa kiivetä Tien Son -luolaan, sillä siellä ei ollut ketään muita turisteja, ja se oli todella vaikuttava - ja ihanan viileä paikka. Veneretki Phong Nha -luolan läpi oli hyvin miellyttävä, sillä veneiden moottorit sammutetaan ja kuski soutaa reilun kilometrin verran luolan sisällä. Hiljaisuus hämärän luolan sisällä vahvistaa taianomaista tunnelmaa.

Inside Thien Son Cave

We had still one morning in Son Trac, and we took our time deciding which cave to visit. Paradise Cave is often mentioned to be the most beautiful one, but to get there we would have had to rent a motor bike, so we ended up choosing the easiest option: Phong Nha Cave, which is only accessible by boat. The boats leave from Phong Nha Caves Tour Centre which was located about 10 minutes' walk from our guest house. You can share a boat with maximum 10 people - we managed to join four German people, so we had six passengers plus a guide hired by the Germans. This way we paid for the boat ride and the entrance fee to two caves altogether 12 euro per person. As a bonus we could also get some of the guiding, although we had meant just to share the boat. However, the group needs to stay together as they also need to take the same boat back. We got to visit two caves on the same trip: first Thien Son Cave, where you needed to climb up 330 steps on steep steps (the heat made this rather challenging) and afterwards we took the boat to the Phong Nha Cave. Apparently not many tourists make the taxing trek up the stairs, as there were no other tourists in Thien Son Cave. It was a really impressive and mercifully cool place. The boat trip through Phong Nha Cave was lovely, as the drivers turn off the engines of the boats and paddle around a kilometre inside the cave. The silence inside the cave makes the atmosphere just magical.

Phong Nha oli ehdottomasti käymisen arvoinen paikka, ja oli ihana päästä välillä luonnon rauhaan Vietnamin kaoottisista miljoonakaupungeista. Seuraavaksi olimmekin matkalla maan pääkaupunkiin Hanoihin, joten kaaosta oli jälleen tiedossa!

Phong Nha was absolutely worth staying a couple of days, and it was lovely to get away from Vietnam's chaotic big cities to enjoy some time in the nature. Our next destination was the capital city of Hanoi, so more chaos ahead!
