Hanoi & Halong Bay

Our visit to Sapa in Northern Vietnam had been full of ups and downs, but one of the most awaited highlights of our time in Vietnam, Halong Bay, turned out to be absolutely amazing from start to finish. The only thing not on our side was the weather, as after experiencing almost three weeks of nothing but sunshine and relentless heat, the weather turned cloudy and rainy just in time for our Halong Bay cruise. It didn't make the area any less beautiful, however the pictures don't necessarily show its glory quite as well with grey skies. The bay with its thousands of limestone karsts and isles is an amazing sight which I cannot compare to any other place I have ever seen before.

Unicharmin kyydissä emme kuitenkaan nähneet monta muuta laivaa, joten saimme nauttia alueen kauneudesta rauhassa.

Our ship

Our cabin

Although we are usually budget travellers, this time we wanted to invest a bit more to have a good experience, and after reading several reviews we ended up booking 3 days 2 nights cruise with Unicharm Cruises. The price seemed, by our standards, outrageously high at 511 euro for the two of us, including transfer from our hotel in Hanoi, all meals and accommodation on the boat as well as lots of activities. However, we were really happy with everything, so we found the cruise to be well worth it. One of the most important points was that Unicharm takes a different route than most of the Halong Bay cruises - this is the most popular tourist destination in Vietnam, so there are loads of boats in the bay. While on Unicharm we didn't see many other boats, so we could enjoy the views in peace.

"View" over Cat Ba national park

The cabin was great with its huge window, so we could enjoy the scenery comfortably from the bed, and the food was delicious. For me as a vegetarian they had prepared a separate plate full of delicacies for each meal, apart from which there was a lot of salads, soup and vegetables on the buffet. Our first afternoon we went kayaking, the second day we went hiking in the pouring rain up to a view point on top of a hill, where you could see great views over the Cat Ba national park (whenever the clouds would allow it), and the third day we did a cycling trip to a small village on the island. The best part of Halong Bay is just the incredible scenery, that I didn't tire of. Luckily the sun came out every once in a while to cheer up the greyness.

Lakes and temples in Hanoi

We returned to Hanoi once again, revived by this lovely cruise, and this time we actually had time to look around the city a bit. We didn't do any sort of a sightseeing tour, but spent most of our time hanging out in the Old Quarter and the French Quarter, soaking up the busy atmosphere of a big city. We did visit a couple of temples by lakes (Ngoc Son temple in the Hoan Kiem Lake, as well as Tran Quoc Pagoda by West Lake), walked past the Ho Chi Minh mausoleum (which was closed on the day), but passed any museums or other tourist attractions. Hanoi was surprisingly charming a city to wander around in relative peace - although you are always at risk of being ran over by a motorcycle.

... and how many bottles of beer can you fit on a motorbike?

A month in Vietnam gave us a lot of experiences, and the country surprised us in many ways. I had been under the impression that in Vietnam you need to be very vigilant for scammers and thieves, but we didn't experience that at all - we felt safe the whole time. Another misconception that I had was that the people would not be very friendly in Vietnam. That also proved incorrect, as mainly the people we encountered were nice and helpful, although communication was often challenging - most Vietnamese don't speak that much English, and apparently my Vietnamese pronunciation was that terrible that nobody understood the couple of phrases I tried to say in Vietnamese. However, we always managed, one way or another. Now it was time for a change of scenery and fly to the Philippines to spend some time on some paradise beaches for a change!
