Campeche on harvemman Yucatanin turistin listalla, koska se on liian kaukana rantakohteista pikaista päiväretkeä varten. Jos aikaa riittää, kannattaa kyllä suunnata kaupunkiin pariksi yöksi, sillä se on yksi kauneimmista näkemistäni kaupungeista koko niemimaalla! Campechen muurien suojaama vanha kaupunki on itse asiassa niin huolellisesti kunnostettu ja ylläpidetty, että se ei oikein näytä edes oikealta kaupungilta, vaan mieleen tulee jokin elokuvaa varten rakennettu kulissi. Toinen toistaan söpömmät pastillisävyissä hehkuvat kolonialistiset rakennukset, kävelykatua reunustavat kahvilat ja ravintolat sekä keskustaa hallitseva Parque Principal kengänkiillottajineen tekevät kaupungista todella hurmaavan paikan kuljeskella ympäriinsä ilman sen kummempia ohjelmia.

Campeche doesn't reach the bucket list of that many visitors on the Yucatan peninsula, as it is too far from the beach resorts for a quick day trip. However, if you have the time, it is certainly worth a visit as it is one of the prettiest towns I have seen on the whole peninsula! The walled old city is actually so carefully restored and maintained that it hardly even looks like a real town at all, you could be forgiven for thinking it was a set built for a movie. The pastel-coloured colonial houses, one prettier than the other, the walking street lined with cute cafes and restaurants and the heart of the old city, Parque Principal with the shoeshiners waiting for customers all make the city a very pleasant place to stroll around without having any particular destination in mind.

Kävimme kunnon turistien lailla parissa käymisen arvoisessa turistikohteessa. Vanhan kaupungin muureille voi pientä pääsymaksua vastaan kiivetä ihailemaan pittoreskiä arkkitehtuuria ylhäältä käsin. Muureilta löytyy myös useampia pieniä museoita, kuten mayojen arkkitehtuurista kertova museo, joka oli mielestäni todella kiinnostava. Kävimme myös San Miguelin linnassa, josta löytyy hienojen näköalojen lisäksi myös arkeologinen museo. Merenrantaa reunustava Malecón-katu on myös viehättävä paikka iltakävelylle, josta löytyy (nähtävästi pakollinen) Campeche-kyltti sekä Novia del mar-patsas, joka esittää miestään mereltä takaisin odottavaa naista. Campechessa viettää mukavasti muutaman päivän nauttien suhteellisesta rauhasta turistimassojen ja kaupustelijoiden puuttuessa.

Like any good tourists, we visited a couple of sights we deemed worth visiting. You can climb up on the walls of the old city for a small entrance fee and enjoy the view of the picturesque city from up there. The walls are also housing several little museums, such as the Maya Architecture Museum that I found particularly fascinating. We also visited San Miguel fort that offers spectacular views and houses the archaeological museum. The seafront promenade Malecón is a lovely place for an evening walk and this is where you will find the (apparently obligatory) Campeche sign as well as Novia del mar - a statue representing a young woman waiting for her partner to return from the sea. Campeche is a lovely place to spend a few days enjoying the relative peace in the absence of tourist masses and too-aggressive sales people.
