Uskomaton Zionin kansallispuisto - The Incredible Zion National Park

Heti Las Vegasin ulkopuolelle päästyämme edessä oli melkeinpä pelkkää erämaata, jota siellä täällä täplitti pieniä taajamia. Tiet kapenivat kaksikaistaisiksi ja liikenne väheni ihan olemattomiin tunnin sisällä. Suuntasimme kohti Zionin kansallispuistoa noin 2,5 tunnin ajomatkan päässä, josta olimme varanneet jo erittäin hyvissä ajoin (yli puoli vuotta etukäteen!) telttapaikan Watchman Campgroundilta. Ajoissa pitikin olla, sillä Zion on todella suosittu kansallispuisto ja kaikki majoitukset varataan ihan täyteen pitkälti etukäteen.

As soon as we got out of Las Vegas we were faced with practically nothing else but desert, dotted by a few little settlements here and there. The roads became narrower until there were only two lanes and the traffic became close to non-existent within an hour's drive. We were headed towards Zion National Park about 2,5 hours away, where we had already booked a tent site on Watchman campground. We booked really well ahead (more than six months before the date!) which is necessary, as Zion is extremely popular national park and all accommodation options get booked out solid well in advance.

Our ride and accommodation

At the campground with amazing views

The river by the campground

Natural beer-cooling method

Along the way the scenery started to get pretty impressive with multi-coloured mountains rising out of nothing in the desert, but once we reached the park itself and our campground, that's when it got really incredible. As per our previous experiences, the campground was really basic with hardly any other services but toilets (although just outside campground there were public showers), but you cannot complain about the vistas! Instead of the showers we decided to take advantage of the nearby river, where we had a dip and enjoyed some beers cooled in the river. Remember how I told you before that we bought a tent and two air mattresses from Walmart at a total cost of 70 USD, the mattresses costing eight bucks apiece? We figured then that hey, they only need to last us four nights of camping. As it turns out, one of them only lasted two nights of camping in Sequoia, as here it lost almost all the air already before bed time. That's what you get for buying ridiculously cheap stuff. Luckily we are small enough that we could squeeze in on one single mattress, but it was not the most comfy night ever!

Directly from the campground you could take the free shuttle bus to all the hiking routes, as you are not allowed to drive your own car into the park after a certain point. There were huge crowds waiting for the shuttle, but they come often enough to disperse even a hopelessly long-looking queue in 10 or 15 minutes.

The Narrows

At The Narrows

I had two things planned for Zion: The Narrows and Angel's Landing. On the first day we decided to do The Narrows and rented the necessary equipment from Zion Adventures. As practically the whole hike takes place wading in the river (at some point the water is only ankle-deep but at times reaches the waist) we rented the whole set including water shoes, socks, water-proof trousers and a walking stick to provide balance (43 USD per person). I did see some guys doing the route barefoot in shorts, so of course it is not absolutely necessary to rent anything. I wouldn't go barefoot on a rocky river as most of the time you cannot see where you are stepping and the water was really quite cold, so without the waterproof pants I couldn't have stayed in for long! But well-prepared as we were, The Narrows was really a great experience. There were quite a lot of people on the route, but not so that it would have been disturbing and the scenery was just incredible with the canyon walls rising on both sides. There is not a lot of sunshine in the bottom of the canyon, so this is very pleasantly cool hike on a hot day. The entire route would be 25 kilometres but we just did the most popular section, about five kilometres until the narrowest bit known as Wall Street and then back the same way.

Climbing up the Angel's Landing

Made it to the top!

We left the challenging Angel's Landing for the second day. This is not a particularly long route at about eight kilometres, but what makes it so challenging is the steep uphill especially at the end, where instead of walking it is more like rock-climbing. There are metal chains attached to the rock to help you pull yourself up and use them for safety while scrambling up. Even before the steepest bit most of the journey is zig-zagging uphill and in the blazing sun it is pretty hot going. The whole way is a great work out for your tights and buttocks and the last bit works out the upper body as well! Also here there were quite a lot of people on the route and at times you needed to be pretty careful to be able pass either people coming from the other direction or frozen in place due to vertigo. I cannot recommend this route to anybody suffering from a fear of heights, but the views from the top are definitely worth the trouble! I was really happy that we got to do this awesome hike - that's one thing less on my bucket list!

Me koimme nämä ikonisimmat reitit tällä kertaa, mutta takaisin voisi mennä monta kertaa patikoimaan moneksi päiväksi eikä mahtavat maisemat loppuisi kesken!

Zion National Park is an absolutely awe-inspiring place with breath-taking views and incredible hiking opportunities all over the place. We got to do these most iconic hikes this time but you could go back many times to hike for several days and you wouldn't run out of amazing scenery!

Kunnon makuupussi on tarpeen!
