Alaskan risteilyn huippukohdat - The Highlights of our Alaskan Cruise

Edellisessä postauksessa valaisin risteilyelämää yleisesti, tällä kertaa saatte lukea mitä teimme maissa käydessämme!
My previous post was about the cruise in general, while in this post you will find out what we did onshore!
Ketchikan
Arriving to the port of Ketchikan

Creek Street

I knew of course that it gets pretty cold in Alaska in the wintertime, however I did not know that in the summertime it rains all the time. Well, I certainly learnt that during this cruise. We arrived in the tiny town of Ketchikan early in the morning and it was raining cats and dogs. We had planned to do a flightseeing tour with a float plane to a place called Misty Fjords, but due to the bad weather all the flights were cancelled. Nothing we could do about that, so we donned our hiking gear which I had thought was reasonably water resistant and set out to explore the town. It didn’t take long until we were absolutely soaking wet while walking towards the Totem Pole Heritage Centre, where with the 5 USD entrance fee got us luckily indoors to see the original totem poles of the Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian peoples originally living in this area. This was an interesting but small place, so before long we were back on the street taking our chances with the elements. At this point we discovered there was actually a free shuttle bus transporting the people from the cruise ship terminal to the few points of interest in the town. We jumped on and got a ride until Creek Street, which is a historical area of the town built right on the creek. Although the weather continued to be absolutely miserable, this neighbourhood built on stilts was a fascinating place to explore, especially as there were salmon and the seals hunting them in the river. However, there was nothing else that interested us in this town, just tourist shops (souvenir shops and jewellery shops, one more desperate than the other) so we headed back into the comfort of the ship.

Juneau
Seals in the whale-watching cruise

We arrived in the capital of Alaska, Juneau in the morning and surprise surprise, it was raining like hell. We had learnt our lesson the day before and bought rain ponchos on the ship (3 USD per piece, you can imagine the quality). Also here the float plane tours are usually on offer, but they were cancelled due to the weather as was to be expected. We finally ended up booking a whale watching cruise, although we had specifically decided not to do that - just because those tours are really expensive and we have seen whales in different parts of the world. However, we had little choice but either go whale watching, hang out in the town of Juneau (which doesn’t really have much else than tourist shops) or go back to the ship to eat and drink. Since we didn’t want to waste the day doing nothing, we took the pricey (135USD per person) whale-watching trip, which also included transfer to and from Mendenhall Glacier. You know how in the advertisements for whale watching the whales are always jumping out of the water right next to the boat? I have never on numerous whale watching trips ever seen anything like that. Normally you can count yourself lucky if you see a tail and that was pretty much the case also this time. The whales hanging out in these waters are the humpbacks and we saw them on three occasions - first you see the spray of water coming out of the whale’s blow hole, then you see a flash of its back and finally the tail. Nevertheless, it is always such an inspiring and amazing experience to see even a little glimpse of those awesome giants - even if they don’t come jumping right next to your boat.

Soaked but happy to see whales!

From the harbour we headed out to the Mendenhall glacier, which did not impress us quite as much as it probably should have - we had just seen so many glaciers on the Canadian Rockies and with this miserable weather the glacier just didn’t look as spectacular as it probably does on a sunny day. We were doing a couple of short hikes around the visitor centre of the glacier, but truth be told we were pretty scared hiking there just the two of us, as this is active bear area. Also the weather wasn’t really inspiring for long hikes, so we cut it pretty short. It was well past the time for a first drink of the day as well, so we headed back to the ship in the afternoon.

Skagway
Mahtavaa! Upeaa! Heti ulos! Tälle päivälle olimme varanneet sen ainoan laivalta varatun retkemme, junamatkan historiallisella Skagwayn White Pass-rautatiellä, joka rakennettiin kultakuumeen aikoihin. Junamatkalle olimme kuitenkin menossa vasta iltapäivällä, joten aamusta ehdimme oikein hyvin tutustua kylään ja käydä pienellä patikkaretkelläkin. Skagwayn kylä näyttää elokuvaa varten rakennetuilta kulisseilta, mahdottoman söpöine kauppoineen, saluunoineen ja ravintoloineen. Kylän keskustasta on helppo  kävellä monelle mukavalle patikkaretkelle, me valitsimme Smuggler’s Covelle menevän muutaman kilometrin reitin. Olipa ihanaa kävellä ilman vesisadetta ja satuimme löytämään mitä parhaimman näköalapaikan, josta näimme laivammekin!
Skagway town

As unbelievable as it sounds, it was NOT raining when our ship arrived in the tiny Skagway. Amazing! We couldn’t wait to get out there! This was the location where our only pre-booked excursion took place, the journey on the historical White Pass railway that was built during the days of the Gold Rush. However, we were only taking the train journey in the afternoon, so in the morning we had time to look around the village and go for a little hiking trip. The Skagway town looks like it was built for a Wild West movie with its impossibly cute shops, saloons and restaurants. There are a couple of hiking trails you can easily walk to from town centre, we chose the one leading to Smuggler’s Cove. What a feeling to walk around without getting soaked by the rain! We happened to find a great view point to see our ship as well, it was a really enjoyable walk!
Smuggler's Cove

The train journey on White Pass was certainly worth its price (149 USD per person when booked at the ship). The charmingly old-fashioned train huffed and puffed its way up along worryingly old-fashioned rail tracks through absolutely stunning mountain scenery. At the same time we learnt a lot about the history of the area, the Gold Rush and what incredibly hardships people went through to get to the gold. It was super interesting and the views were breath-taking. For us the day in Skagway was definitely the best of the stop-overs but that was at least partly due to the weather - now we could really appreciate the absence of rain!

Glacier Bay

After the three stop-overs we had two days at sea ahead of us, but that certainly didn’t mean there wasn’t going to be anything to see. We spent most of the first day in Glacier Bay National Park which was an absolutely stunning place. Until now we hadn’t been very lucky with the weather but now we hit the jackpot, as we had clear pure sunshine the whole day in Glacier Bay. Apparently this is very rare as usually it’s rainy and foggy there which inevitably dampens the glory of the glaciers. The cruise ship passed slowly one glimmering white glacier after another, stopping at the biggest and the most well-known ones, taking slow 360-degree turns so that you had equally good views on each side of the ship. All I could do was to stare in awe, admiring the spectacular scenery and take about a thousand pictures, none of which could ever fully capture what we were seeing. When leaving Glacier Bay behind, it didn’t mean the end of the glaciers though, as the following day afforded more of similarly amazing views. This was an absolutely incredible experience and without a doubt the highlight of the whole cruise!

  1. Ei vitsit! Upea reissu! Harmi, että sattui noin kova vesisade. Hyvällä asenteella selvisitte kuitenkin.

Me ollaan käyty kahdella Karibian risteilyllä, mutta jo kauan ennen niitä unelmoin Alaskan risteilystä. Ja just yhdistämällä siihen ainakin Vancouverin. Kiva seurata teidän matkaa. :)

    1. Kiitos kommentista!
