Kalliovuoret osa 1: Jasper The Rocky Mountains part 1: Jasper

Junamatka Saskatoonista Jasperiin Kalliovuorilla oli pitkä ja tuskainen, jo tutuiksi käyneine viivästyksineen, mutta lopulta saavuimme perille vain noin kolme tuntia myöhässä aikataulusta. Meillä oli tällä kertaa hostelli varattuna, sillä näin pienessä paikassa sohvasurffailu ei oikein onnistu. Jasper on pikkuriikkinen alppikylän tyylinen kylä, joka on selkeästä turistimaisuudestaan huolimatta mielestäni oikein viehättävä. Ensimmäiselle iltapäivälle emme olleet varanneet autoa, koska kylässä kaikki on lyhyen kävelymatkan päässä eikä meillä ollut ensimmäiselle päivälle sen kummempia suunnitelmia kuin tutustua Jasperiin ja ottaa selville, mitä kannattaa tehdä seuraavina päivinä.

Our train journey from Saskatoon to Jasper in the Rocky Mountains was long and somewhat painful with the all-too-familiar delays, but finally we got to Jasper only about three hours late. This time we had a hostel booked, as Jasper is too small for couchsurfing. It’s a small alpine village type of town which I found very charming, despite being obviously very touristy. For the first afternoon we didn’t have a car booked as in the town everything is within walking distance and we didn’t have any particular plans, apart from getting to know the town and finding out what to do the following days.

Maligne Canyon

Vilkkaasta matkailutoimistosta saimme suosituksen, että kannattaa mennä käymään Mount Edith Cavellin jäätiköllä, mutta siellä on rajallinen määrä pysäköintitilaa, joten se pitää varata vähintään päivä etukäteen. Pysäköintilupia jaetaan matkailutoimistosta joka aamu klo 8-10 välillä ja sinne pitää mennä jonottamaan aikaisin. Muita Jasperin lähettyvillä olevia suositeltuja paikkoja ovat mm. Maligne Canyon, sen lähellä sijaitseva Lake Annette sekä kauempana sijaitseva Maligne Lake. Toimintasuunnitelmamme oli siis jonottaa heti aamusta pysäköintilupa seuraavalle päivälle jäätikölle, sitten hakea auto ja suunnata Maligne Canyonille ja Lake Annettelle. Iltapäivästä meillä olikin ratsastusretki varattuna Jasper Riding Stables-firman kautta, joten päivä oli melko täynnä actionia.

At the busy tourist information centre we got the recommendation to go to Mount Edit Cavell glacier which has limited parking facilities, so you need to obtain a parking permit minimum one day in advance. The parking permits are issued at the tourist information centre every morning between 8 and 10am and it is good to line up early to get your desired spot. Other interesting places to visit nearby Jasper include Maligne Canyon, the nearby Lake Annette and a bit further away Maligne Lake. Our action plan was to get our glacier parking permits for the following day bright and early in the morning, then get the car and drive to the Maligne Canyon and Lake Annette. For the afternoon we already had a horseback riding trip booked with Jasper Riding Stables, so an action-packed day ahead!

Maligne Canyonille on vain noin 20 minuutin ajomatka Jasperista, joten se oli helppo paikka aloittaa. Kanjonin ympärillä voi tehdä monenmittaisia patikkareittejä, suurin osa hyvin helppoa maastoa ja maisemat ovat ihan mahtavat. Sieltä Lake Annette on muutaman minuutin ajomatkan päässä. Meillä ei ollut paljon aikaa, joten tallustelimme järven rannalla vain muutaman minuutin verran ja otimme kuvia peilityynestä järvestä ja siitä heijastuvasta vuoristosta ja palasimme sitten Jasperiin ratsastusretkellemme. Olimme varanneet kolmen tunnin ratsastusretken, joka oli kieltämättä aika pitkä aika kokemattomille ratsastajille (olen ollut hevosen selässä keskimäärin kerran kolmessa vuodessa viimeisen vuosikymmenen aikana), mutta joka tapauksessa hauskaa oli. Ratsastimme läpi hienojen maisemien harvinaisen säyseillä hevosilla rauhalliseen tahtiin. Metsiä, vuoria, järvi- sekä jokimaisemia riitti, mutta emme valitettavasti sattuneet näkemään mitään villieläimiä.

Maligne Canyon is located about 20 minutes drive from Jasper, so it was an easy spot to start with. There are multiple hiking routes of various lenghts around the canyon, most of them with very easy terrain and the landscape is just spectacular. From the canyon Lake Annette is just a few minutes drive away. We didn’t have much time, so we just strolled along the shore for a few minutes taking pictures of the gorgeous lake and the surrounding mountains reflecting on it and then headed back to Jasper for our horseback riding trip. We had booked a three-hour ride, which is honestly quite a long one for inexperienced riders (I have been on a horse probably on average once every three years in the past decade or so) but in any case we enjoyed the ride. We rode through incredibly beautiful scenery with its forests, mountains, lakes and rivers on very calm and tame horses at a slow pace. Unfortunately we were not lucky enough to spot any wildlife this time, but it was a great afternoon nevertheless.

Seuraavana päivänä ajelimme kohti Banffia ja matkan varrella kävimme siellä Mount Edith Cavellin jäätiköllä, jonne olimme edellisenä päivänä varanneet pysäköintipaikan. Olipa mahtavat maisemat, huolimatta savuisuudesta (myöhemmin saimme tietää, että kyseessä olivat British Columbiassa riehuvien metsäpalojen savut - aluksi luulimme kyseessä olevan usvan). Pysäköintialueelta oli lyhyt helppo patikkamatka näköalapaikalle. Jäätikköä kohti kävellessämme huomasimme murmelin, joka tökötti kaikessa rauhassa kiven nokassa päivää paistattelemassa - otus poseerasi siellä kaikessa rauhassa minuuttikaupalla, joten meillä oli aikaa ottaa kuvia oikein sydämen kyllyydestä. Toisin oli laita pienien maaoravien pica kanssa, ne viilettivät niin mahdotonta vauhtia kivien joukossa hyvän valepukunsa turvissa, että huolimatta lukuisista yrityksistä niitä ei ole helppo bongata kuvista. Jäätikkö ja vuori itsessään olivat todella mahtava näky, ehdottomasti jonottamisen arvoinen! Seuraava pysäkkimme oli mahtavat Athabasca-putoukset, josta voi tehdä pienen kävelymatkan näköalapaikalle hurjana virtaavan Athabasca-joen yli.

The next day we started our drive towards Banff and along the way visited the Mount Edith Cavell glacier, for which we had obtained the parking permit the previous day. What an incredibly impressive view, despite the smoke (later on we learned that it was the smoke from the forest fires raging in British Columbia - originally I thought it was fog). From the parking lot it s a short easy hike to view point of the glacier and the mountains. On the way there we spotted a marmot poised on top of a rock sunbathing. The little creature was in no hurry to get anywhere and posed for us very kindly for minutes. That was not the case with the tiny little ground squirrels picas, who kept speeding among the rocks protected by their excellent camouflage so that despite several attempts it is hard to spot them in any of our pictures. The glacier, the lake and the mountains around were absolutely amazing, this place is definitely worth queuing up for the parking permits! The next stop along the way was the gorgeous Athabasca Falls, where you can do a nice little stroll around the falls to a lookout over the raging Athabasca River.

Sieltä jatkoimme kohti Banffia Icefields Parkway-nimistä tietä pitkin ja oli helppo nähdä, miksi sitä pidetään yhtenä maailman kauneimmista ajoreiteistä. Uskomattoman sinisinä hehkuvia järviä, vuoria, valkoisina kimaltelevia jäätiköitä oli matkan varrella niin monta, että lopulta jo huudahdin turhautuneena “nyt loppuu ne järvet ja jäätiköt, ei me ehitä pysähtyä joka paikassa!” Tälle reitille kannattaa tosiaan varata aikaa, sillä muutaman kilometrin välein sitä törmää johonkin mahtavaan näkyyn, jonka kohdalla on pakko pysähtyä. Yksi pysäkkimme oli Peyto-järvi joka oli yksi näistä uskomattoman sinisistä järvistä. Kuvia nähdessään sitä helposti kuvittelee, että ne on photoshopattu tai väritetty jollain lailla, mutta ei - järvi hehkuu ihan oikeasti epätodellisen sinisenä jäätiköstä virtaavien mineraalien ansiosta ja itse asiassa kamera ei saa sitä hehkua edes tallennettua läheskään niin mahtavannäköisenä kuin mitä se luonnostaan on. 

At the Lake Peyto

We continued on towards Banff along the Icefields Parkway, which is rightly listed among the most scenic drives in the world. Unbelievably blue lakes, mountains, white glimmering glaciers all over the place. There were just simply so many of them that I exclaimed at some point “would you stop it with your lakes and glaciers, we don’t have time to stop all the time!” Take your time along this road as you will want to make many, many photo stops. One of the surreally blue lakes we stopped at was Lake Peyto. When you see the pictures you easily imagine that they have been colorized or Photoshopped or whatever but no - in fact the lakes glimmer much brighter blue than what the cameras can even capture, thanks to the minerals flowing down from the glaciers.

Suunniteltu pysäkki oli Columbia Icefield-nimisessä keskuksessa, jossa piti käydä Glacier Sky Walk-nimisessä turistipysäkissä. Totta puhuen tämä Glacier Sky Walk oli meille melkoinen pettymys ja jos olisimme tienneet etukäteen millainen se on, emme olisi maksaneet moisesta. Kuvittelin sekä nimestä että näkemistäni kuvista, että kyseinen “sky walk” olisi suoraan jäätikön yläpuolella (koska monille jäätiköille ei voi turvallisuussyistä mennä kävelemään suoraan jäälle). No, näin ei ole. “Sky walk” on laakson yläpuolella, eli jalkojesi alla voit nähdä alla olevan laakson - joka ei suoraan sanottuna ole mitenkään henkeäsalpaavan hämmästyttävä näky - ja jos sattuu olemaan kirkas päivä, toisin sanoen ei sumua eikä savua, niin voi nähdä muutaman kilometrin päässä olevan jäätikön. Meidän siellä ollessamme edellä mainitun metsäpalojen savun takia emme nähneet jäätiköstä häivääkään, mitä ei toki mainittu lippuja ostaessamme. Minun mielestäni tämä ei ole millään lailla 34 CAD:n arvoinen kokemus, ei sittenkään vaikka jäätikkö olisi siellä kaukaisuudessa näkynyt, koska sen näkee myös ihan siitä tien päältä samoissa olosuhteissa. En siis suosittele, mutta tulipa tehtyä sekin. Matkan varrella näkee paljon muitakin jäätiköitä ihan ilmaiseksi. Ensi postauksessa: Banff!

"Glacier" Sky Walk

We also made a planned stop at a place called Columbia Icefield Centre to do what they call a “Glacier Sky Walk”. To be honest, the sky walk was a bit of a disappointment for us and we wouldn’t have paid for it if we realized how it’s going to be. Based on the name and the pictures online, I imagined that the sky walk takes place directly over a glacier, as often you cannot walk on the actual glacier for security reasons. However this is not the case as the sky walk is built on top of a valley so basically you have the view of the valley floor - underwhelming to say the least - and, apparently on a clear day i.e. when there is no fog or smoke, you can see the Athabasca glacier a couple of kilometres away. On the day of our visit it was extremely smokey due to the forest fires though so we could not see the glacier at all, which obviously was not mentioned when buying the tickets. I think the Skywalk is by no means worth the entrance ticket of 34 CAD per person, since you get great views of the same glacier, as well as several other glaciers from the road for free. I definitely do not recommend doing the Skywalk unless you get a particular kick out of walking on glass floor. In the next post we continue to Banff!
