Teksasin road trip - Road trip in Texas: Dallas, Austin & Houston

Downtown Dallas

We ended up in Texas almost by coincidence - we knew that it was not possible to get to our next actual destination (which I shall still keep a secret at this stage) straight from Hawaii, so we would have to make our way to US mainland in any case. The cheapest flight we found was from Houston, and we also found a pretty reasonable flight from Kona to Dallas, so our road trip route became Dallas - Austin - Houston. We had six days, so we stayed two nights couchsurfing in each town - in effect having one actual day in each city. It meant we needed to be selective and concentrate on the must-sees!

Downtown Dallas

Dallas

Familiar faces

At the Ewings' house

If you grew up in the 80's like we did, you might also consider the name of the city synonymous with the iconic TV series (which, by the way, seems to be totally unknown to the Americans of the same age as us). Dallas was really big for both of us, so we definitely wanted to see where it was filmed. Southfork Ranch was the place the Ewings called home, and it is open to the public. 16 USD will get you on a tour led by an enthusiastic guide and you get to see the house where a lot of the scenes were filmed. After the tour you can walk around the ranch in your own time to see the longhorn cattle, horses and ponies, and lots more. If you don't mind having the theme song in your head for the following week, I highly recommend visiting Southfork Ranch.  You need a car, as there is no public transport access - but then again, that's pretty much Texas for you.

Toinen asia, josta Dallas tunnetaan, on se miten John F. Kennedylle siellä kävi. Kaupungin keskustassa (talossa, jossa ampujan oletetaan olleen) sijaitseva The Sixth Floor Museum on todella kiinnostava ja perusteellinen museo ei pelkästään JFK:n kuolemasta, vaan myös hänen elämästään ja siinä samalla vähän USA:n historiaa. Pääsymaksu tännekin on 16 USD, johon kuuluu audio-opas.

Historical district

Dallas has another claim to fame as the place where John F. Kennedy got shot. The Sixth Floor Museum, located in downtown area in the building where the shooter was presumably situated, is a fascinating museum about the life and death of JFK, as well as a bit of history of the US. The entrance ticket cost 16 USD including an audio guide.

The historical district of Dallas is a very small but pleasant area close to the JFK Museum. We just walked through it on our way to the Dallas Museum of Art, where we had a very brief but enjoyable visit. This is one of the largest art museums in the US, so we could have easily spent a day there, but this time we only had chance for a quick look at the most interesting parts. As the entrance is free, we figured it's better than nothing.

Austin

Austin Capitol

Austin was such a place where I could not have named any sights beforehand - all I knew was that there are lots of live music venues. Luckily we had great CS hosts, who showed us around the city. We started by visiting the Capitol, where our host Mari works as a guide. The building itself is really impressive, and the free tour offers great quick introduction to the history and the political system of Texas and US.

We wandered around downtown by foot for a while, and saw loads of really cool-looking music venues and theatres. Unfortunately there was also quite a lot of homeless people, some passed out on the street, which made our walk less pleasant, but this is what you see in a lot of the North American cities. Other than that the city had a really nice vibe, and I can understand why it is one of the fastest-growing cities in the US.

Austin

Waiting for the show

The show is on!

We spent the whole day with Mari and her husband CJ, and it was a super fun day. We rented kayaks to paddle along Colorado River right by downtown, and in the evening we went to see a free musical Little Mermaid in the nearby park. Before leaving the city the following day we still had time to visit the Austin university campus area, which is a pleasant area with lots to see; such as Harry Ransom Center with its free changing exhibitions.

Kayaking in Austin

Houston

When it came to our last destination in Texas, we only had one thing in mind: Space Center. I'm not particularly keen on space in general, but this was an absolutely amazing place! The entrance fee is 30 USD per person, but you can easily spend the whole day there, as there is so much to see. Some of the exhibitions and demonstrations were clearly meant for children, but there was also really a lot interesting things for adults as well, and we didn't even manage to see everything we wanted to. It was particularly fascinating to see the command centre, where they monitor and guide the space flights.

We wouldn't have had time for anything else in Houston, but we were really happy with the time in Space Center. Then it was time to leave the US behind and head to our next destination, where we would spend the following month doing voluntary work. Where did we go and what did we do? Find out in the next post!
