Yhden aikakauden loppu ja uusi alku - The End of an Era and the New Beginning

Kuvituksena satunnaisia kuvia Maltan vuosiltamme.

As people following me on social media have gathered by now, we have just left behind the tiny island of Malta that we called home for nearly four years. Although we spent a relatively long time in Malta, in this post I'm not going to get into the feels that leaving Malta is giving me, but rather answer the all-important question: what next? Our families and friends are pretty much used to it that we up and leave, so it is probably not a surprise to anyone. Judging by all the questions I'm getting, many people seem interested in knowing what we are doing next, so here goes... the pictures of this post are random pics from our years in Malta.

Matka

The Trip

So, once again we are heading for a long backpacking trip, but this time our plans are less definite than on our previous trips. In other words we have not made very exact itinerary for the trip, but we have a vague plan which is open for changes. We are planning to be travelling around six months or so, and we are starting off in Asia. This part of the trip is more or less decided, as we are going to visit the following countries: Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Laos, The Philippines, Taiwan and Japan. How long we are staying in any one country depends mainly on visas, suitable flights, the cost of living in the country and, of course, on how much there is to see in that country. We are most likely going to be spending around 3 - 4 weeks in one country.

So far Sri Lanka is the only place that we have flights to and from, so we know that we are staying pretty exactly three weeks. At the moment we have a rough itinerary for Sri Lanka and currently I'm looking into the best places to visit in Vietnam. In any case, after Japan our ideas get a good deal more vague - at the moment we are thinking of flying to Hawaii and from there to Central America, to do possibly voluntary work in for example Nicaragua or Guatemala. However, that all depends on the safety situation at that moment, as well as how we are feeling then - it all feels like it's so far away that anything can happen before that and we might come up with something totally different.

After the Trip

Well, if our plans are not entirely clear for the trip, our plans for after the trip are a lot more vague still! Currently we are staying at my in-laws' place in Hungary, which is - as per usual - the place we dump our stuff and use as a base for an official address and so on. So in any case after the trip, this is where we come back to, pack our stuff and head to... wherever we decide to head to. In my mind the best option would seem to be returning to Spain, as I hear the economy is finally starting to get better and employment chances are getting better. Going back to Malta does not seem likely at the moment, although I never say never. All options are open, however our criteria for a place to live has remained pretty much the same; ideally we would like to live in Southern Europe, most likely by the Mediterranean, where you get sunshine most of the year.

The best case scenario would be that we would make a living as digital nomads. It is my intention to get more freelance work during this trip and see if I could possibly make a living without having to sit in an office. If that was possible, I wouldn't necessarily want to travel around the world constantly, but at least then we could settle down anywhere at all without having to worry about finding a day job.

We are going to take the time during this trip to think about what we really want to do long-term, where we want to live next and so on. It is super exciting and a little scary, but hey - that's life!
