Lintubongarin paratiisi - The Birdwatcher's Paradise

Cienfuegosista hyppäsimme jälleen kerran bussiin, tällä kertaa kohti Playa Girónia, joka on pieni, parin tuhannen asukkaan kylä Sikojenlahden rannalla. Paikka on kuuluisa lähinnä Sikojenlahden maahannousun ansiosta ja kylässä onkin asialle omistautuneita (propaganda)museoita, jotka me tosin jätimme väliin. Tällä bussimatkalla alkoi ihan tosissaan keittää kaikkien bussifirman työntekijöiden tylyys asiakkaita kohtaan - tässä vaiheessa oli jo selvää, ettei kukaan edes vastaa hyvän päivän toivotukseen tai kiitokseen ja ainoa tilanne missä kukaan puhui meille oli se, kun he vaativat tippiä. Kirjoitin silloin jo vihapäissäni erillisen blogipostauksen aiheesta "Miksi Viazul on maailman huonoin firma", mutta en ole varma tulenko koskaan postaamaan moista vuodatusta. Joka tapauksessa saavuimme Playa Giróniin jo melko huonoissa fiiliksissä eikä kylässä syömämme illallinen mitenkään nostanut tunnelmaa (Gina sai grillattua kanaa tilattuaan lautaselle kanan selkää, josta suurimman osan luineen päivineen sai lopulta kulkukoira). 

We hopped once again on a bus, this time from Cienfuegos towards Playa Girón, which is a small village of about 2 000 inhabitants by the Bay of Pigs. It is mainly known for Bay of Pigs invasion and there are dedicated (propaganda) museums for this event - we however decided to skip those. On this bus trip we got seriously fed up with the general rudeness of all the staff of the bus company - by this time we had realized it is the norm not to even answer hello or thank you, and the only time anybody would talk to us at all was when they demanded a tip. While still pissed off, I already wrote a separate blog entry on the topic of "What makes Viazul THE WORST" but in retrospect I'm not at all sure I will ever publish that rant. In any case we arrived at Playa Girón in not-the-best-of-moods and the dinner we had in the village did nothing to raise our spirits (after ordering grilled chicken Gina was served the back of the chicken, most of which ended up being devoured, bones and all, by a hungry stray dog).

Seuraavana päivänä päätimme ottaa iisisti ja nauttia päivästä Caleta Buenassa, joka on noin 8 kilometrin päässä kylästä sijaitseva lahden poukama. Sinne on rakennettu kiva uima-alue rantatuoleineen ja baareineen. 15 CUC:n pääsymaksulla siellä sai hengailla koko päivän, syödä ja juoda mitä mieli teki. Paikka oli kaunis eikä siellä ollut turhan paljon ihmisiä, rommi virtasi ja buffet-lounas oli myös ihan kohtuullinen. Vietimme siellä mukavan rennon päivän, mikä nosti fiiliksiä huomattavasti. Playa Girón on suosittu sukellus- ja snorklauskohde, mutta me emme sukella ja jätimme snorklaamisretketkin tällä kertaa väliin, joten tämä oli loistava tapa viettää aikaa meren äärellä.

The following day we decided to take it easy and enjoy the day at Caleta Buena, which is a lido built into a lovely cove located about 8 km from the village. It is a beautiful area with some beach chairs, bars and a restaurant. The entrance fee of 15 CUC will let you spend the whole day there, eating and drinking as much as you like. We had a really lovely day relaxing there and charging our batteries. The place is really beautiful and not crowded at all, we enjoyed a considerable number of rum cocktails and beer and the buffet lunch was rather reasonable as well. While Playa Girón is a popular destination for scuba-diving and snorkeling, we don't do diving and this time decided to skip also snorkeling trips, so Caleta Buena was the perfect way to enjoy some time by the sea.

Toisena päivänämme Playa Girónissa kävimme aamulla läheisellä rannalla, Playa de Cocolla. Ranta oli nätti ja todella hiljainen, siellä ei monta muuta ihmistä näkynyt. Itse asiassa koko kylä vaikutti todella kuolleelta, turisteja sen enempää kuin paikallisiakaan ei paljon näkynyt. Iltapäiväksi olimme varanneet opastetun retken läheiseen metsään lintuja bongaamaan - Playa Girónia nimittäin kutsutaan lintubongarin paratiisiksi. Monet matkaavat täältä läheiselle Laguna de las Salinas -laguunille flamingoja katsomaan, mutta koska me olimme nähneet Meksikossa jo paljon flamingoja, halusimme nähdä enemmänkin papukaijoja ja muita paikallisia lintuja Bermejas-luonnonsuojelualueella. Oppaamme tuli sovitusti hakemaan meitä majoituksestamme ja ajoi meidät Moskvitchillään noin 15 minuutin matkan luonnonsuojelualueelle. Kävelimme hiljaa patikkareittejä myöten metsässä oppaan osoitellessa meille lintuja, jotka olisivat jääneet meiltä ihan täysin huomaamatta. Onnistuimme heti retken alussa bongaamaan Kuuban kansallislinnun, kuubantrogoonin, jonka höyhenissä toistuvat Kuuban lipun värit. Lintuja näkyi todella paljon, harmittavaa kyllä en muista lajien nimiä, kun en ole mikään asiantuntija. Joka tapauksessa monenlaisia värikkäitä siipiveikkoja siellä oli ja nautimme retkestä täysin siemauksin!

At Playa de Coco

On our second day in Playa Girón we spent the morning on the nearby beach, Playa de Coco. It is a gorgeous beach and totally quiet - there were hardly any other people. In fact, the whole village seemed really dead, there were very few tourists and not a lot of locals about either. For the afternoon we had booked a guided bird-watching trip to the nearby nature reserve, as Playa Girón is known as a birdwatcher's paradise. Many people head to the nearby Laguna de las Salinas to see flamingoes, but as we had recently seen lots of flamingoes in Mexico, we were more eager to see parrots and other local birds at the Bermejas nature reserve. As agreed, our guide came to pick us up with his Moskvitch and drove us about 15 minutes away to the nature reserve. We were walking quietly along the hiking routes in the forest while the guide was pointing out birds that we would have never noticed. We managed to spot the Cuban national bird, the Cuban trogon that displays the colours of the Cuban flag on its feathers, right in the beginning of the hike. There were loads of birds around, unfortunately I couldn't memorize all the names as I'm not an expert on birds. However, there were lots of really pretty colourful birds and we really enjoyed the trip!

Playa Girónissa oli ihan miellyttävää viettää pari päivää rennolla meiningillä ja jos tykkää sukeltamisesta, siellä varmaan viihtyisi kauemminkin. Meidän oli kuitenkin aika vaihtaa maisemaa ja seuraavaksi tähtäimessämme oli Trinidad. 

Playa Girón was a lovely place to spend a couple of days relaxing and if you like diving, you would probably like to stay longer. However, for us it was time to hit the road again and next we were headed to Trinidad.
