Denalin Kansallispuisto - Denali National Park

Our home for three nights in Denali

After the cruise we spent a couple of nights in Anchorage couchsurfing at a lovely couple, Jonathan and Elena. These days were not so eventful as we were just preparing for our trip to the Denali National Park. We got a rental car and drove up to Denali about four hours’ drive away. The accommodation in the national park is pricey and we didn’t want to camp, as it is first of all cold and there is always a chance of rain, secondly there are bears. Luckily we had booked well in time a reasonably priced cabin (Grizzly Bear Resort) for three nights at the rate of 83 USD per night. It was an extremely small and basic cabin without a fridge or any cooking facilities but at least it had electricity and heating, so we had a warm place to sleep in safe from bears!
Mount Denali

We were in Denali on the very last days of the season as the autumn was upon us. In fact, this was a great time to visit as the beautiful autumn colours painted the forests with the brilliant oranges and yellows, however it wasn’t very cold yet. We were really lucky, as it practically didn’t rain at all during our time in Denali. The gorgeous clear days provided us spectacular views of the Mount Denali itself (previously known as Mt. McKinley), the highest peak in North America. They say only about 30% of the visitors to the national park get to see the mountain itself as it is usually shrouded in fog, so we were really in luck!

Ptarmigans lined up

Yksi suosittu vaihtoehto on mennä Eielson Visitor Centreen noin neljän tunnin bussimatkan päähän hintaan 34 USD per henkilö. Me valitsimme vähän lyhyemmän bussissa istumisajan ja menimme Toklat-joelle parin tunnin bussimatkan päähän hintaan 26.50 USD per henkilö.

Grizzly bear in Denali

The best picture we could get of the wolf

In the national park you cannot drive your private vehicle after a certain point, but all visitors must take a bus to get deeper into this vast park. You can choose from a few available options which route you wish to take, the longer the journey, the higher the price. One of the most popular options takes you four hours into the park to Eilelson Visitor Centre at the price of 34 USD per person. We chose a bit shorter route with about 3 hours into the park to the Toklat river at the price of 26.50 USD per person. Usually visitors get to see lots of wildlife during the bus ride and we also saw a grizzly bear, a wolf, sheep, a moose and lots of birds. It was amazing to see the bear from the window of the bus, that’s as close to a bear I wanted to get! Apparently it is not very common to see wolves on these trips so that was lucky for us. The wolf disappeared back into the cover of the forest very quickly though, so we didn’t get much of a picture, but at least we got to see it! The idea of the buses is that if so desired, you can get off, hike around independently and catch any bus going back. That was also what we wanted to do, but we didn’t feel safe hiking just the two of us because of the bears (the recommendation is to hike in groups of four or more). We were hoping to join some other hikers, but as nobody else from the bus wanted to go hiking, we gave up on that idea and just rode the bus back. We did get off at an area called Savage River close to the national park exit, where there were lots of other hikers and we felt safe enough to do a little hike in beautiful surroundings.

At Savage River

Apart from that we did several short hikes around the visitor centre of Denali, they felt reasonably safe as there were usually lots of other people around. Although I feel the Americans tend to exaggerate all the possible dangers and threats, I couldn’t help but worry a little bit about the bears when you are constantly being told what to do to avoid bears, what to do if you do see a bear, what to do if a bear attacks you... Our host Jonathan had lent us bear spray canisters that are supposed to deter a bear while it’s attacking you, but I had little faith in our ability to use them correctly if the time ever came. So I figured the best line of defense is trying to avoid bears at any cost and we concentrated on making lots of noise while walking. If I couldn’t think of anything else, I resorted to singing which should keep any creature in their right minds well away and luckily it worked - we didn’t stumble upon any bears while hiking in Denali.
Yhtenä päivänä kävimme ATV-ajelulla (käsittääkseni suomeksi nimi on mönkijä) Denali ATV Adventures-firman kautta hintaan 175 USD meiltä kahdelta.

One day we did an ATV tour  with Denali ATV Adventures at the price of 175 USD for the two of us. Needless to say I had no desire to drive one - driving anything is my worst nightmare - but wifie wanted to do it and it was lots of fun. The tour took about two hours, of which maybe about one hour was actual driving. The group was fairly big but that was no problem. We drove through incredibly beautiful scenery on tough terrain, which really got the adrenaline going! There were a few stops for taking pictures as well in the particularly scenic places.
Oli hyvä viettää kolme yötä Denalissa, siellä riitti tekemistä ihan mukavasti. Seuraavaksi meillä olikin edessä melkoinen maisemanvaihdos, lensimme nimittäin Anchoragesta aurinkoiseen Kaliforniaan, Los Angelesiin!
It was good to spend three nights in Denali, we had enough to do for this time. Next we had quite the change of scenery ahead of us, as we were due to fly from Anchorage to sunny California, Los Angeles!
