Matkasuunnitelma Osa 7: Denali Travel Plan Part 7: Denali

After our luxury cruise finishes up in the fishing village of Seward we are doing a little day trip to Kenai Fjords National Park. After spending a week on the cruise a little hiking will do very nicely! As per its name the biggest draw to this national park are the spectacular fjords and numerous glaciers. The cold waters are home to all sorts of the marine mammals from whales to sea lions and bears, lynxes and wolverines roam the forests (hopefully we won't get too close to any of those!). It is convenient and affordable to get to Kenai Fjords from Seward by shuttle bus so at this stage we do not need a car yet. After hiking the day in the national park we are continuing to Anchorage.

Kenai Fjords

Denali Mountain

I don't have great expectations for the town of Anchorage but we will just spend a night there, rent a car and drive about 380 kilometres to Denali National Park. Here I do have great expectations: more of incredible scenery, the highest mountain in North America as well as fabulous hiking opportunities. We are spending three nights in Denali in order to have time to enjoy the nature around us. As it is a national park, there is limited accommodation available and it tends to be pretty expensive which is why we have once again made arrangements well in advance: Grizzly Bear Lodge offered relatively affordable cabins for about 80 USD per night. We are arriving in Alaska in the beginning of September, the very end of the summer season, so we didn't want to risk camping - first of all the nights might be pretty cold, secondly we do worry a bit about the bears... (maybe we shouldn't have watched that Canadian movie where a city-dwelling couple goes camping in the woods and gets eaten by a bear).

Grizzly bears in Denali

Denalissa voi patikoida joko omin päin tai ilmaisilla rangerin vetämillä retkillä - pyrimme varmaan suosimaan jälkimmäisiä mahdollisuuksien mukaisesti, koska se on hyvä mahdollisuus oppia enemmän ympäröivästä luonnosta ja oppaan kokeneet silmät luultavasti bongaavat sellaiset eläimet, jotka vilahtaisivat minulta ohi ihan huomaamatta. Sitä paitsi, karhuvaara...

Rentouduttuamme sydämemme kyllyydestä luonnon keskellä on aika suunnata takaisin Anchorageen ja sieltä sitten jatkammekin ihan erilaisiin maisemiin. Tähän mennessä olemme varmaan saaneet ihailla pohjoisen jylhiä maisemia ihan tarpeeksi ja syksy alkaa painaa päälle, joten lennetään aurinkoiseen Kaliforniaan!

In Denali you can go hiking by yourself but there are also free ranger-led tours, which we will probably opt for when possible. It will be a great opportunity to learn more about the nature around us and probably the ranger's experienced eyes will be able to spot all sorts of wildlife that I would miss completely. Besides, bears...

After spending a lovely few days in the nature it will be time to head back to Anchorage and then something completely different. By this time we will have been admiring the majestic landscapes of the north for long enough and the summer is coming to an end, so we are flying to sunny California!
