Apulia Osa 2: Lecce Puglia Part 2: Lecce

From Bari it was easy to travel to another town famous for its gorgeous architecture, Lecce. The 2-hour train ride cost only 10,50€ per person and there was no need to pre-book the tickets.

The vibe we got from Lecce was slightly less pleasant than that of Bari - it seemed poorer and less lively. The old town here was somewhat bigger than in Bari and it had more significant sights but the rest of Lecce outside the old town did not charm me as Bari did. However, the old town did not disappoint! First we got there during the siesta though, which apparently is adhered to religiously year-round, even though you could certainly not blame the weather for being too hot. The streets were rather empty, all the shops, tourists offices and sights were closed... luckily we found a nice bar just next to the Cathedral where we could enjoy a lovely craft beer while waiting for re-opening of the sights. Around 15:30 the life started to get back to the streets and we could start the exploring in earnest.

Entrance to old town. And a fruit truck.

Duomo inside and out

Roman Amphitheatre by night

Sights

The most famous churches in Lecce are Lecce Cathedral and Basilica di Santa Croce. We started off in the cathedral, that was pretty impressive both inside and outside. The cathedral towers over the cute little square where you can also find the tourist information office, should you need one. The interesting bit about the basilica is the intricate decoration of its facade with different animals and grotesque figures, that reminded me rather of a Buddhist temple than a Catholic church. You can enter both churches free of charge and they are well worth a visit.

In the very centre of the old town you can also find one of the most famous sights of Lecce, the Roman Amphitheatre. It was a great sight both in day light and all lit up with Christmas lights in the evening. In the outskirts of old town stands the Castle of Charles V where you can visit with 3€ entrance fee. This castle is much the same than the castle in Bari - tourists cannot climb up to the towers or the walls so there is not much to see, considering the great rooms of the castle are more of less empty. However during our visit there was a temporary art exhibition that I found slightly confusing - I let the pictures do the talking for me.

More and less modern art in the castle

There are three baroque style gates leading into the old town, that are sights in their own right - for instance the beautiful Porta Napoli. Nearby you will also find a small pleasant park Villa Comunale.

I thoroughly recommend spending a pleasant couple of days in Lecce wandering around the old town and enjoying Puglian cuisine. Check out also my post on the sister city Bari!

Grotesque take on Christmas Market...
