Playa del Carmen & Isla Holbox

Koska emme olleet suunnitelleet Meksikon matkaamme kovinkaan perusteellisesti, päädyimme kiertämään vähän niin kuin kehää Jukatanin niemimaata ympäri. Calakmulin jälkeen päätimme viettää taas muutaman rennon rantapäivän tekemättä mitään ja siihen Playa del Carmen tuntui sangen sopivalta kohteelta. Siellä viettämämme viisi päivää voidaan summata näin: syötiin, juotiin, käytiin rannalla ja nukuttiin. Oli siellä toki paljon muitakin turisteja ja hinnat olivat pilvissä, mutta emme antaneet sen menoa haitata. Oli kivaa ja rentoa meininkiä!

Playa del Carmen

As we hadn't really planned our time in Mexico very thoroughly, we ended up going in a kind of a circle around the Yucatan peninsula. After Calakmul we decided to have some more relaxed beach time without doing much and Playa del Carmen sounded like a good place to do just that. The five days we spent there could be summarized like this: we ate, drank, went to the beach and slept. Sure, there were lots of other tourists and the prices were sky-high but we didn't let that bother us. It was lovely and relaxing!

Viimeiset päivämme Meksikossa halusimme viettää Isla Holboxilla, jota hehkutettiin monissa paikoissa maanpäälliseksi paratiisiksi. Odotimme rauhallista, hiljaista pikkusaarta valkoisine hiekkarantoineen, jossa ei näkyisi ristin sielua. Noh, Isla Holbox ei ollut ihan sitä, mutta oli meillä siellä silti kivaa!

We wanted to spend our last few days in Mexico on Isla Holbox that was often referred to as heaven on earth. We expected it to be a quiet idyllic little island with white sandy beaches and nobody around for miles. Well, as it turns out Isla Holbox is not quite like that, but we did have a good time nevertheless!

Saaren maine on kiirinyt nimittäin muidenkin turistien korviin ja kyllä Isla Holboxilla porukkaa riitti. Vaikka saarella ei asfalttiteitä ja autoja ollutkaan, siellä oli silti yllättävän paljon liikennettä golfkärryjen muodossa. Ne hiekkarannatkaan eivät vastanneet ihan odotuksiamme, sillä hiekan valkoisuutta tahri runsas määrä merilevää tai muuta merestä tullutta kasvillisuutta ja hiekka oli jotenkin painunut niin kasaan, että se tuntui kivikovalta sillä istuskellessa. Rantaa ei ole yksityistetty, eli periaatteessa joka puolella saa hengailla ihan ilmaiseksi. Silti on paljon alueita, jotka kuuluvat vain rannalla olevien hotellien asiakkaille. Ihan ensimmäinen ilta Isla Holboxilla ei tuntunut mitenkään maanpäälliseltä paratiisilta...

Apparently other tourists have also heard of this paradise and there were lots of other people on Isla Holbox. Albeit it's true that there are no paved roads and no cars, there is still surprisingly a lot of traffic in the form of golf carts. Even the beaches were not exactly what we expected as their whiteness was stained by sea weed or other vegetation from the sea. Also the sand was rock hard to sit on. The beach is not privatized, so basically you are allowed to hang out wherever you like. However there are many areas that are reserved for guests of the hotels on the beach. Our very first evening on Isla Holbox didn't really feel like a paradise...

Mutta kyllä löysimme sieltäkin paljon ihania paikkoja. Kävelimme yhtenä päivänä rantaa pitkin Playa Cocolle, joka oli sen verran kauempana ettei siellä ollut paljon porukkaa. Tämä maisema oli enemmänkin sitä, mitä oltiin Isla Holboxilta lähdetty etsimään! Saimme olla välillä ihan kahdestaan pulikoimassa ihanan lämpimässä vedessä. Toisena päivänä kahlasimme hiekkadyyneille katsomaan flamingoja ja muita lintuja, tunnetaanhan Isla Holbox myös lintubongarin paratiisina.  Lintuja siellä totta vie näkyikin ihan mahdottomasti, sokerina pohjana upea flamingolauma. Valokuvaajani oli ihan innoissaan! Se oli todella hieno päivä, vaikka siinä sääret vähän väsyivätkin kahlatessa ainakin pari tuntia suuntaansa.välillä nilkansyvyisessä vedessä, välillä shortsinlahkeet vettä laahaten. Tulipa ainakin vähän erilaista treenausta!

But we did find lots of lovely places in Isla Holbox. One day we walked along the beach until Playa Coco, which is a bit further out and therefore less crowded. This is more like the sort of place we were hoping for! At times it was just the two of us frolicking around in the lovely warm water. Another day we waded through the shallow water to the sand dunes to see flamingos and other birds, as Isla Holbox is also known for being a paradise for bird watchers. There sure were plenty of birds and the icing on the cake was the spectacular flock of flamingos! My photographer was over the moon! It was an absolutely amazing day, although it was a bit tiring to wade at least two hours one way in the water that was at times only up to our ankles, other times reaching my shorts. At least it was a different work out!

Around Playa Coco

Rannalta löytyy paljon erilaisia baareja ja ravintoloita, joista monet ovat symppiksiä vähän rähjäisiä reggae-tyylisiä baareja keinuineen. Siellä oli mukava juoda iltaoluet auringonlaskua ihaillen. Vaikka Isla Holbox ei ollutkaan ihan niin rauhallinen paratiisisaari, mitä odotin, kyllä se oli silti mukava paikka päättää Meksikon lomamme. Palasimme yhdeksi yöksi Cancuniin, josta seuraavana aamuna lähti kone kohti Kuubaa!

On the beach there are loads of different bars and restaurants, many of them cute, slightly shabby reggae-style places. It was nice to end the day having a beer in one of those bars admiring the sunset. While Isla Holbox was less of a serene paradise than we expected, it was still a lovely place to end our holiday in Mexico. We returned for one last night to Cancun, where the plane took off for Cuba the following morning!
