Norsuja Minneriyan kansallispuistossa - Elephants in Minneriya National Park

Kuski jarrutti yhtäkkiä ja pysähtyi keskelle tietä huudahtaen “look, elephant!” Ja niinpä olikin, siinä se möllötti ihan tien vieressä kaikessa rauhassa nyhtäen heinää kärsällään. Normaali nykyajan matkustajan reaktio tietenkin olisi kaivaa samantien esiin sen seitsemän sortin kamerat ja ottaa kuvia ja videoita heti, kun mitään Instagramin arvoista tapahtuu. Me olimme kuitenkin ottaneet viimeisen neljän tunnin aikana niin paljon kuvia ja videoita norsuista, että jätimme kuvaamisen sikseen ja keskityimme vain katsomaan ja ihailemaan tuota majesteettista valtavaa eläintä, joka oli niin lähellä meitä piittaamatta meistä tuon taivaallista. Lopulta kuskimme kehoitti minua antamaan hänelle kännykkäni, jotta hän voi ottaa meille kuvia norsun lähtiessä ylittämään tietä ja me saimme edelleen keskittyä katsomiseen. Jatkaessamme matkaa kuski kertoi meille hilpeästi, miten vaarallinen tämä tie oli, sillä sen seudulla liikkuu paljon norsuja. Nämä vaarat eivät näyttäneet häntä paljon huolettavan, sillä hän ajeli edelleen nasta laudassa mutkia suoriksi vetäen. Olimme palaamassa Sigiriyan kylään Minneriyan kansallispuistosta, jossa olimme saaneet nauttia iltapäiväsafarista, joka oli ylittänyt kaikki odotukseni. Toivoin tietenkin näkeväni norsuja, ja tiesin sen olevan todennäköistä, mutta en odottanut näkeväni yli 60 norsua niin läheltä - yksinäisiä norsuja, kokonaisia laumoja, perheitä sietämättömän suloisine pikkunorsuineen, kaikki niistä kaikessa rauhassa touhuten omia norsuille ominaisia touhujaan (eli lähinnä heinän syömistä). En ollut koskaan nähnyt norsuja luonnossa, vain monissa Aasian maissa tyypillisiä kahlittuja norsuja, ja tämä kokemus nostatti kyyneleitä silmiini. Oli niin uskomattoman vaikuttavaa olla niin lähellä näitä mahtavia eläimiä, jotka eivät näyttäneet kiinnittävän turistijeeppeihin mitään huomiota. 

The driver brought the jeep to an abrupt stop in the middle of the road exclaiming “look, elephant!” And there it was, right by the side of the road, pulling at grass with its trunk, seemingly without a care in the world. The normal reaction of a nowadays’ traveller would obviously be pulling out all sorts of cameras and taking pictures and videos as soon as anything Instagram-worthy happens. However, during the past four hours we had taken so many pictures and videos of elephants that instead of filming we concentrated on just watching and admiring that majestic, enormous animal that was so close to us, yet couldn’t care less about our presence. Finally the driver asked me to hand him my phone, so that he could take pictures for us while we continued to just watch. When we continued our way, the driver told us cheerfully “this very dangerous road, many elephants”. He did not seem to worry much about the danger though, as he continued to push the pedal to the metal while navigating the narrow and winding road. We were on our way back to Sigiriya from Minneriya National Park where we had just enjoyed an afternoon safari, which totally exceeded my expectations. Of course I had wished to see elephants, and I knew it was likely, but I didn’t expect to see 60+elephants so up close and personal - lone elephants, whole herds of elephants, smaller family groups with unberably cute baby elephants, all of them just doing their thing (mainly eating grass) ignoring us. I had never seen elephants in the wild, only the chained elephants you typically see in many Asian countries, and this experience brought tears to my eyes. It was incredibly moving to be so close to these magnificent animals and watching them in their natural habitat. 

Olimme varanneet safarin majatalostamme, niin kuin suurin osa turisteista tekee, hintaan 6 000 rupiaa eli noin 30 euroa. Olisimme ihan mielellämme jakaneet tämän kulun kahden muun turistin kanssa, mutta emme löytäneet ketään jakamaan safaria, joten saimme jeepin ja kuskin privaattikäyttöön. Kansallispuiston pääsymaksu oli yhteensä hiukan yli 8 000 rupiaa eli noin 40 euroa, näin ollen koko safarin hinnaksi tuli meille kahdelle noin 70 euroa plus tippi kuskille. Hinta tuntui sangen kohtuulliselta 5 tunnin safarista, kun jo matka kansallispuistoon kesti tunnin suuntaansa. 

All the jeeps couldn't handle the river crossing as well as others...

We had booked the safari from our guest house, as most tourists do, at the price of 6 000 rupees (about 30 euro). We would have gladly shared this cost with other two tourists, but as we didn’t find anybody to share it with, we got the jeep and the driver privately for us. The entrance fee to the national park was a little over 8 000 rupees (40 euro) for the two of us, so the total price worked out to be around 70 euro plus the tip to the driver. This felt like a very reasonable price for a five-hour safari, when already the drive to the national park took an hour one way. 

Norsut olivat tietenkin safarin huippukohta, mutta näkyi siellä muitakin eläimiä: iso lauma vesipuhveleita, erilaisia apinoita, riikinkukkoja ja paljon muita lintuja, sekä hieman yllättäen vähemmän eksoottisia eläimiä - lehmiä. Hämmästelimme viimeksi mainittuja, jolloin kuski otti asiakseen selittää, etteivät lehmät ole villieläimiä, mutta kyläläisillä on oikeus laiduntaa lehmiään kansallispuiston alueella. Se tuntui vähän erikoiselta suojellulla alueella, mutta en toisaalta voi uskoa että muutama hassu lehmä valtavalla alueella aiheuttaisi juurikaan tuhoja - norsuihin verrattuna ne eivät paljoa syö. 

The obvious highlight of the experience were the elephants, but we also saw many other animals: there was a big herd of water buffaloes, different sorts of monkeys, peacocks and lots of other birds, and surprisingly a bit less exotic animals - cows. We were quite surprised to see them, and the driver explained the cows were not wild animals, but the people from the village are entitled to let their cattle graze in the national park. That seemed a little strange in a protected area, but on the other hand I cannot imagine a few cows could make huge impact on such a vast area - compared to the elephants they are hardly big eaters.

Water buffalos

Kokemukseni perusteella suosittelisin varauksetta safaria Minneriyan kansallispuistossa - olin lukenut etukäteen, että kuuluisamman Yalan kansallispuiston alueella on valtavia määriä jeeppejä, enkä oikein pitänyt ajatuksesta. Minneriyassakin turistijeeppejä oli enemmän kuin mitä odotin, mutta puiston eläimet vaikuttivat jättävän jeepit kokonaan huomiotta, eivätkä ne menneet liian lähelle. En siis usko, että safariturismi haittaa näiden eläimien eloa ollenkaan, ja se tuo mukavasti tuloja sekä paikallisille ihmisille että kansallispuistolle. Olimme viettäneet alle viikon Sri Lankassa, mutta norsusafari meni suoraan ykköseksi listallani tämän maan huippukohdista, ja aika korkealla se on koko elämäni kokemusten listalla!

Based on my experience I would be happy to recommend doing a safari in Minneriya National Park - I had read beforehand that in the more famous Yala National Park area there are hundreds of jeeps at any one time, and I didn’t really like that idea. Even in Minneriya there were more jeeps than I expected, but the animals in the park didn’t seem to pay any attention to the jeeps at all, and they didn’t get too close to the animals. Therefore I don’t think the safari tourism is causing any harm to these animals, and it is bringing in a nice income both for the local people and to the national park. We had spent less than a week in Sri Lanka when doing the safari, but it went straight to the top of my list of highlights of this country, and pretty high up on the list of all experiences in my whole life!
