Ensitunnelmia Sri Lankasta - First impressions of Sri Lanka

Silloin olen Negombossa, ensimmäisessä kohteessamme Sri Lankassa.

Saluting the rising sun

Waking up early in the morning, listening to the concert of the tropical birds. At sunrise the air is gently warm, so that I can do yoga on my terrace before the temperature rises to its hot and humid top figures. After yoga I can enjoy a cocktail of exotic fruits for breakfast. I am in Negombo, our first destination in Sri Lanka.

We flew to Sri Lanka from Hungary via Kiev with Ukraine Airlines, which pretty much met my expectations: it was like flying long distance with Ryanair, except that they give you reasonable food and water. We spent the night on the plane, which meant an uncomfortable and sleepless night, so when arriving at Colombo airport we were rather eager to get to our guesthouse Christima Residence that had promised we can check in early. They had also promised that the driver would meet us at the airport, which we figured would be an easy and hassle-free way to get there after a long flight. However, we couldn't locate the driver, and after waiting a good while I called the hotel. I was told the driver was on his way and should be there in 10 minutes. After that it still took a good 40 minutes before the driver got there - so we could have just taken a normal taxi and gotten there a lot quicker. However, we got there, the room was ready and even nicer than expected, so we let it go - this is probably just an example of the local relaxed attitude towards timekeeping.

Dark clouds before the thunderstorm on our first evening in Negombo

Enjoying a refreshing dip on a hot day

Our plan was to spend a couple of days chilling in Negombo, which is a beach destination conveniently close to the airport, get over the jet-lag and the night flight by doing nothing. We did that spectacularly well. Lying by the pool, taking naps, taking long walks on the beach (we didn't want to swim in the sea due to the high waves), eating veggie curry several times and occasionally drinking some beer. That's pretty much what we got up to in Negombo. Although we didn't really do much, we got a really lovely first impression of Sri Lanka.

Sunset on the beach

Kuten kaikki sanovat, paikalliset vaikuttavat aidosti ystävällisiltä.

Like everybody says, the locals seem genuinely friendly. Often the people passing by on the street look at us with friendly smiles and especially children, so sweet and shy, stare at us from behind their mothers' skirts with huge curious smiles on their faces. I already got so used to being greeted cordially by strangers, that today after hearing the word "hello" close to me, I automatically looked that way smiling, only to realize that the man next to me had just answered his phone. Sure, many of the people talking to us eventually want to sell us something, but not even nearly all - for example, there was the old man who was just cycling past us shouting eagerly "hi hi hello!" With one notable exception, even the sales people have been a lot less annoying than their counterparts in many other countries tend to be - it is usually enough to say a polite "no thank you" once or twice, and you are left alone. The first couple of days in Sri Lanka ensured me that I will love this country - I am eagerly awaiting the coming weeks and the adventures we will be having here!
