Yosemiten Kansallispuisto - Yosemite National Park

Alunperin tarkoituksemme oli telttailla Yosemiten kansallispuistossa kaksi yötä ja sitä tarkoitusta varten ostimme San Josesta teltan sekä kaksi ilmapatjaa movojaan 70 USD:n yhteishintaan (kiitos, Walmart). Ongelmana tosin oli, että kaikki varattavissa olevat telttailupaikat varataan täyteen kuukausia etukäteen ja first come first served-telttapaikat ovat kaukana pelipaikoilta, noin tunnin ajomatkan päässä. Kun lähtöaamu San Josesta koitti, ilmeni vielä isompi ongelma - Yosemite Valleyn sääennuste näytti lämpötilan laskevan yöllä jopa -6 asteeseen. Sellaisiin lämpötiloihin meidän makuupussimme eivät olleet ollenkaan sopivia, joten piti laittaa suunnitelmat pikavauhtia uusiksi. Löysimme Coarsegoldin kylästä noin puolentoista tunnin ajomatkan päässä Yosemite Valleysta suhteellisen kohtuuhintaisen kasinohotellin (siis siihen nähden että kyseessä oli viime hetken varaus lähellä kansallispuistoa) ja varasimme sen kahdeksi yöksi. Päädyimme siis viettämään itse Yosemiten kansallispuistossa vain yhden päivän, sillä edestakaisin ajelu olisi koitunut liian suureksi hommaksi. Pyrimme kuitenkin kattamaan mahdollisimman paljon päivän aikana!

Last minute plan changes lead to unusual accommodation places!

Originally it had been our intention to spend two nights camping at the Yosemite National Park and for that purpose we bought a tent and two air mattresses in San Jose for the total price of 70 USD (thank you, Walmart!). However, unfortunately all the bookable camp sites get booked out months in advance and the first come, first served camp sites are all located a fair bit away from the main hiking routes, about an hour away from Yosemite Valley. On the morning we were leaving San Jose, another bigger problem came to our attention - the weather forecast of Yosemite Valleys showed night temperatures of -6 C. Our sleeping bags were never going to cope with such low temperature, so we had to come up with a plan B quick. We found a relatively reasonably priced casino hotel in a town of Coarsegold about 1,5 hours’ drive away from Yosemite Valley (reasonably priced considering it was a last minute booking that close to the national park, that is) and booked it for two nights. So we ended up spending only one day in the national park itself as it would have been too much driving back and forth going for another day. However, we tried to do the best we could in the little time we had!

Yosemite Falls

Yksi Yosemiten kuuluisimmista näköalapaikoista avautuu heti tunnelin jälkeen: siinä saa ensimmäisen henkeäsalpaavan näköalan sekä El Capitanista, että Half Domesta. Keli ei ollut ihan paras mahdollinen meidän siellä ollessamme, sillä oli vähän sumuista ja välillä vuoristotietä ajellessamme ei nähnyt monta metriä eteensä. Onneksi sää kuitenkin selkeni juuri, ennen kuin pääsimme tuohon näköalapaikkaan, joten saimme nauttia tuosta hienosta vistasta. Jätimme auton parkkiin (onneksi löytyi vielä parkkipaikka - se on yksi tyypillinen ongelma Yosemitessa, että kaikki pysäköintialueet täyttyvät jo aamupäivästä eivätkä myöhäisemmät tulijat löydä millään paikkaa, mihin jättää autonsa) ja hyppäsimme ilmaisen shuttle busin kyytiin. Yosemitessa ei ole pakko käyttää shuttle busia, mutta sitä suositellaan liikenneruuhkien ja pysäköintiongelmien vähentämiseksi.

Half Dome and El Capitan

One of the most famous view points of Yosemite opens up in front of you right after the tunnel: that is your first, breath-taking, glimpse of the El Capitan and Half Dome at the same time. The weather was not ideal on the day of our visit as it was rather foggy and at times while driving along the mountain roads we could hardly see a few metres ahead. Thankfully, the weather cleared up somewhat just before we reached the tunnel so we could also enjoy that amazing view. We parked the car (luckily we could still find a parking space - another problem at Yosemite is that the parking lots fill up by mid-morning and the late-comers cannot find anywhere to leave their vehicles) and got on the free shuttle bus. In Yosemite you don’t have to use the shuttle bus, but it is suggested to lessen the congestion of the roads and the parking problems.

Hostimme Gabor oli suositellut meille Vernon Falls-patikkareittiä, joka vaikutti juuri sopivan mittaiselta meidän aikatauluumme. Matkaa kertyi noin 4 km, josta suuri osa oli jyrkkää ylämäkeä portaita pitkin, siinä oli Stairmasteria kerrakseen. Näkymät matkan varrelta sekä varsinkin huipulta olivat kyllä kovastikin vaivan arvoiset! Halusimme nähdä myös kuuluisat Yosemiten putoukset, joten jatkoimme matkaa shuttle busilla sille pysäkille. Täällä ei tarvinnut patikoida juuri ollenkaan, koko kierros oli alle kilometrin mittainen tasaista asfalttia. Ei siinä mitään, se sopi meille oikein hyvin aiemman huhkimisen jälkeen! Putoukset olivat ihan mahtavat 739 metrin korkeudellaan. Kuulemma yleensä syksyllä Yosemiten vesiputoukset ovat aika kuivillaan, mutta tänä vuonna oli ollut ennätysmäärä lunta talvella, joten vielä syyskuussakin vesi virtasi putouksissa ihan tarpeeksi vaikuttavasti. Yosemite oli vienyt meistä mehut ja edessä oli vielä puolentoista tunnin ajomatka takaisin hotlaan, joten lähdimme suosiolla ajelemaan takaisin hyvissä ajoin. Vuoristoteillä tehtiin vielä monessa kohtaa tietöitä, joka hidasti matkaa entisestään. Kyllä Yosemite oli kerrassaan upea, vaikka meillä ei olosuhteiden pakosta siellä paljon aikaa ollutkaan!

Up the stairs to Vernon Falls!

Up up and away...

Our host Gabor had recommend us to do the Vernon Falls hike, which suited our schedule perfectly. It is about 4km roundtrip, most of it steep uphill, a great Stairmaster work out! The scenery along the way and especially from the top was well worth the effort though. We also wanted to see the famous Yosemite Falls, so took the shuttle bus to the relevant stop. Here there was hardly any hiking required, the whole loop was less than a kilometre and it was all even paved road. That suited us just fine after the extortion of the previous hike! The falls are amazing with their height of 739m and even though usually by late autumn the falls run pretty much dry, now due to the record snow fall the winter before there was still enough water to impress us. We were pretty tired by now and still had the one-and-a-half-hour drive back ahead of us, so we started making our way back. There were also road works at several points on the mountain roads, which made for even slower going. Yosemite is just awe-inspiring, even though we had less time there than originally planned!
