Kalifornian rannikkokierros osa 1 - Up the Californian Coast part 1

Vuokrasimme LA:sta auton alle ja lähdimme suunnitelmien mukaisesti ajamaan rannikkoa pitkin kohti San Franciscoa. Halusimme ajaa kuuluisaa Highway 1:a pitkin mahdollisimman paljon, mutta valitettavasti merkittävä osa tuota rannikkoreittiä (Big Surin tienoilla) oli suljettu maanvyörymän takia, joten suuren osan reittiä jouduimme ajamaan proosallisempaa moottoritietä pitkin. Pysähdyimme heti Malibussa vierailemaan Getty Villassa, joka on edesmenneen miljonääri J. Paul Gettyn taidekokoelman esittelypaikka. Los Angelesin kaupungissa on isompi Getty Center, jonne emme ehtineet, mutta tämä Villa oli ihan mielenkiintoinen pysähdyspaikka. Itse visiitti on ilmainen (se tulee varata etukäteen netissä täältä), mutta pysäköinti maksaa 15 USD per auto.

We rented a car from LA and started driving up the coast towards San Francisco as planned. We wanted to take the famous Highway 1 for as much of the route as possible, but unfortunately a significant portion of the coastal route was closed around Big Sur due to the landslide, so for much of the way we had to take the less romantic highway 101. We made our first stop in Malibu to visit Getty Villa, which exhibits of the art collection of the late millionaire J. Paul Getty. In the city of Los Angeles there is a bigger Getty Center exhibiting more of the collection but as we didn’t make it there, the Villa made a pleasant stop along the way. The visit is free (you need to pre-book the visit here) but the parking costs 15 USD per car.

Malibun seudut olivat juuri sellaista kaunista rannikkoreittiä palmuineen ja sinisine merimaisemineen, mitä tältä reitiltä odotimmekin. Malibu oli kuitenkin liian lähellä Los Angelesia pysähdyspaikaksi ja halusimme vierailla “Amerikan Galapagos-saariksi” kutsutuilla Channel Islandsilla, joten sitä varten pysähdyimme kahdeksi yöksi Venturaan, josta laivat lähtevät. Saarille pääsee vain yhden firman laivoilla (Island Packers), joita ei mene joka päivä joka saarelle, joten retki kannattaa varata hyvissä ajoin etukäteen. Me suuntasimme mannerta lähimpänä olevalle Santa Cruzin saarelle, jonne laivalla kestää reilu tunti matkata. Heti satamassa veneen lähtöä odotellessamme bongasimme ensimmäiset merileijonat ja niitä näkyi matkan varrella monessakin kohtaa köllöttelemässä joko laitureilla tai puijuilla päivää paistattelemassa. Näimme myös delfiinejä matkan varrella. Santa Cruzin saari oli hyvin karu, itse asiassa se muistutti meitä Maltasta jylhine kallioineen ja upeine merinäköaloineen! Lähdimme satamasta pienelle patikkamatkalle kohti Potato Harbouria. Vaikka laiva oli yllättävän iso ja sieltä rantautui paljon porukkaa, olimme ylhäisessä yksinäisyydessämme heti muutaman minuutin kävelyn jälkeen. Maisemat olivat hienot ja bongasimme älyttömän söpön pikkuketun, erikoinen rotu joka elää vain näillä saarilla. Lintuja ja liskoja lukuunottamatta paljon muita eläimiä näillä saarilla ei asukaan, sen verran karua seutua tämä on. Vietimme mukavan päivän saarella ja laivan palatessa illalla satamaan päivä oli pulkassa. 

The area in and around Malibu was just the kind of beautiful sea side that we expected from this route with its palm trees and glimmering blue sea views. However Malibu is too close to LA to make it a sensible stop-over place and we wanted to visit the Channel Islands National Park, dubbed “Galapagos Islands of America” so we stayed two nights in Ventura, where the boats depart from. There is only one company offering boat trips to the islands (Island Packers) and there are limited trips, so it is a good idea to book online well in advance to ensure you get the trip you want. We headed to Santa Cruz, which is the closest to the mainland and only takes about an hour to get to. We saw the first sea lionsi rght away in the harbour, while waiting for the boat to leave,  and along the way we saw several more either swimming or sunbathing on piers or rocks. We were also lucky enough to see dolphins along the way. The island of Santa Cruz is very barren, in fact it reminded us of Malta with its dramatic cliffs and spectacular sea views! Once the boat arrived in the harbour, we headed out straight away to do a little hike towards Potato Harbour. Although the boat was surprisingly large and full of people, as soon as we had walked a few minutes we couldn't see another soul anywhere. The scenery was really spectacular and we also saw incredibly cute little fox, island fox that only lives on these islands. Apart from lizards and birds there is little other wildlife on these arid islands. We had a lovely day at the island and when the boat got back into the Ventura Harbour we were pretty much done for the day!

Seuraavana päivänä matka jatkui kohti pohjoista. Pysähdyimme kahville ja lounaalle Santa Barbarassa, joka on hurmaava espanjalaistyylinen pikkukaupunki. Ihan kuin olisimme olleet Andaluciassa! Täällä on yksi kiinnostavista “missioneista”, joita löytyy niin monista Kalifornian kaupungeista - espanjalaisten lähestyssaarnaajien perustama luostari. Santa Barbaran hovioikeus on myös ehdottoman hurmaava rakennus espanjalaistyylisine laattoineen ja kellotornista avautuu hienot näkymät kaupungin yli. Nautimme täällä meksikolaisen lounaan ja jatkoimme haikein mielin matkaa - tässä kaupungissa oli niin paljon charmia, että olisi ollut mukava viettää täällä edes pari yötä. Tarkoituksenamme oli ollut viettää iltapäivästä aikaa rannalla Pismo Beachilla, mutta ilma ei suosinut meitä; oli niin mahdottoman tuulista, että rannalla tuli kylmä ja sitä paitsi hienonhieno hiekka lensi silmät ja suut täyteen. Kuljeskelimme vähän aikaa etsien suojaisempaa mestaa auringonpalvontaan tai jotain muuta mieleistä tekemistä tässä “tyypillisessä kalifornialaisessa rantakaupungissa”, mutta lopulta jouduimme luovuttamaan ja ajelimme majapaikkaamme San Luis Obispossa. Täältä löytyi edullinen majoituspaikka, muuta en kaupungista voikaan sanoa. Seuraavana päivänä matka jatkuu jälleen!

The following day our journey continued towards north. We stopped for lunch and coffee in Santa Barbara, which is an absolutely charming Spanish-style town. It was really as if we were in Andalucia! In Santa Barbara you find one of the interesting missions that dot the Californian coast line towns - monasteries founded by the Spanish missionaries. Also the court house of Santa Barbara is an amazing Spanish-style building with a lovely view from its bell tower over the town. We had a Mexican lunch and hit the road again with a little sadness - this seemed like such a lovely town, it would have been nice to stay the night or two. Our plan had been to get a little beach time in Pismo Beach but we were not lucky with the weather: it was so incredibly windy that it was too cold and the fine sand was blown into our eyes and mouth and every possible nook and cranny. We spent some time walking around, looking for a more sheltered place or at least something to do in this "quintessential Californian beach town", but after a while we had to give up and drive to our accommodation in San Luis Obispo. The motel was cheap, that is about all I can say about this town. The following day it is time to hit the road again!
