Pikavisiitti San Franciscoon - A Quick Visit to San Francisco

San Francisco has always been one of my dream cities, for me one of the most interesting cities in the US. Unfortunately it is also one of the most expensive cities in the US or the whole world, so it poses some challenges for a budget traveller. Our accommodation in San Jose was more than an hour’s train ride away from San Francisco, but we decided it made more sense than getting accommodation in the city or driving back and forth with parking costs. For our first day in SF we had reserved a tour of Alcatraz island (Alcatraz Cruises). The boat tickets are often booked out well in advance, so it is a good idea to reserve them as soon as possible. You need to choose the time of the boat to the island but once there you can explore the island in your own time and catch any boat back into the city. Alcatraz used to be an military base before it became the home to some of the most notorious criminals in the US. You can explore various different buildings on the island, definitely the most interesting being the actual prison cells. In general I am not a fan of audio tours, but on Alcatraz I thought it was really well done and made touring the facility a lot more interesting. On the audio tour both ex-prisoners and the prison guards are talking about the life in Alcatraz while you have a peak at the grim cells and other parts of the prison. We spent a couple of hours on Alcatraz and it was well worth its price, a really interesting and educational tour. From the island we got distant glimpses of the famous Golden Gate bridge, but you get a lot closer look from Golden Gate Park where you find also a visitor centre, souvenir shop and whatnot. It is very easy to get to by public transport by taking the bus number 30 from downtown and there are several different view points for getting great views of the bridge.

“Vääränvänkyrä katu”, Lombart Street on itsessään hauska näky, jota turistit näköjään ajelivat alas ihan huvikseen. Ensi kertaan!
Incredibly steep streets

Cable car

Unlike most cities in the US, San Francisco is fairly compact and most of the town can be explored by enjoyable strolling around. The harbour areas such as Fisherman’s Wharf and Pier 39 are pleasant, if crowded and touristy areas with lots of restaurants, bars and specialty shops. The famously steep streets of the city can prove a bit of a challenge for walking or especially biking around, but they do offer marvellous views once you huff and puff your way all the way up. The “Crookedest Street”, Lombart Street is a curiosity in itself, one that the tourists apparently drive down for fun. Cable car is also a very popular way to get around in a very limited area - we also considered taking it but didn’t deem the experience worth 7 USD per person. However, the Cable Car Museum is free and makes an interesting visit. We had rather little time for San Francisco, especially as it took well over two hours of each day just to get into and out of the city, so there would have been more to see. However, the city didn’t disappoint me - I would it very charming and I certainly liked it a lot better than Los Angeles. Maybe we will be back some day!

  1. Kiva että olette viihtyneet täällä Bay Arealla. Aurinkokin näyttää olleen suotuisa, San Francisco on usein kovin sumuinen. Minäkin kirjoittelin joku aika sitten Alcatrazista. Se on kyllä mielenkiintoinen paikka. http://www.paulagaston.com/viinilaaksonviemaa/alcatrazin-vankilasaari-kalifornia
