Lunneja Cape Bretonissa - Puffins in Cape Breton

The most picturesque parts of the Cabot Trail were still ahead of us. We started the drive bright and early towards White Point, which according to the lady running the guest house was the most beautiful part of the whole island. By taking the scenic route we also managed to avoid some of the ongoing road works that were taking place on the main road. Maybe we were already completely spoilt by incredible views, but I must say I didn't find White Point any more spectacular than many other places we had seen along the Cabot Trail. Possibly the grey cloudy sky and the strong wind did not do the place justice. After White Point we stopped to do a very pleasant hike at Black Brook Beach Hiking Trail with its unique pine trees and pebbly beaches.

The highlight of the day was a boat tour to Bird Islands, which is the nesting place for hundreds of birds (as the name would suggest). A family-owned business in Big Bras d'or, Bird Island Boat Tours , do three tours a day (45 CAD per person plus tax) but it is best to book ahead - we showed up without a reservation and the boat was already full for the tour we wanted to do. We ended up waiting a good four hours for the next one but it was totally worth the wait. Our priority was to see puffins, which we had only managed to catch of glimpse of in Iceland, and oh boy did we see them! There were literally hundreds of puffins all around us, sitting on land, flying in the air and swimming in the sea. There were also lots of incredibly cute plump grey seals both swimming and sun-bathing on the rocks. Sure, there were lots of other birds as well, but for us the puffins and the seals were the main point.

Cape Breton oli kerrassaan mahtava paikka, jossa voisi viettää paljon kauemmankin kuin neljä päivää. Meidän oli kuitenkin aika jatkaa matkaa ja hypätä junan kyytiin ensimmäistä kertaa Kanadassa - kohteena hurmaava ranskankielinen Quebec City!

Cape Breton Island is an absolutely lovely place and you could spend a lot longer time here than the four days we had time for. However it was time for us to get on the train for the first time in Canada - first stop, charmingly French Quebec City!
