Jyrkänteitä ja vesiputouksia Etelä-Islannissa - Cliffs and Water Falls in South Iceland

We made a quick stop in the village of Vik, famous for its black sand beach. The village itself is tiny but very picturesque with a massive church on top of the hill dominating the landscape. From the black sand beach you can see cool rock formations in the ocean, but you get a better view of those in our next stop - cliffs of Dyrholaey a few minutes' drive away. The cliffs are home to innumerable nesting sea birds, including puffins. Unfortunately puffins were way too small, fast and far away for getting any half-decent pictures, but at least we got to see those funny-looking clown-like creatures dashing through the air. There were lots of other tourists, in fact two tourist buses pulled in around the same time that we arrived, but the crowds dispersed once we started the hike up to the top of the cliff with its lighthouse. It was a demanding but very picturesque hike with great photo opportunities.

Church in Vik

Skogafoss

After a couple of hours in Dyrholaey we drove on towards one of the biggest and most beautiful water falls in Iceland, Skogafoss. When arriving at the falls it was rather crowded - probably the first time in Iceland that I felt it was a bit too busy for my liking. In any case Skogafoss is an incredible sight with its enormous masses of water gushing down with amazing force sending off a spray of water reaching surprisingly far. The closer to the fall you dare to go, the wetter you will get. Next to the fall there are stairs going up (428 steps) to the top where you can continue hiking along the river on an easy path. We walked along it for about a kilometre or so, coming across more and more gorgeous vistas all the time, rapids and smaller waterfalls one after another. That was it for the day and we headed to our next accommodation in South Iceland Guest House which proved to be among the best value accommodation on this trip: private room cost 8900 ISK including breakfast.

Seljalandsfoss front and behind

There's more where those cool water falls came from, though. Our next destination was Seljalandsfoss which was luckily only about 20 kilometres away from the guest house, so we got there nice and early the following morning. It was good timing as there were not too many tourists yet. Seljalandsfoss is quite a bit smaller than Skogafoss but not at all less impressive. The interesting bit at Seljalandsfoss is that there is a cave behind the fall itself which allows the visitors to go literally behind the masses of water. As soon as you get close to the gushing fall you get wet and at the latest in the cave behind the water fall every visitor gets soaked to the bone. In the midst of the freezing cold water spray and the deafening roar of the fall you really feel the power of it.

Seljalandsfossin lähellä on lukuisia muitakin putouksia, kuten vähemmän tunnettu Gljufrabui.

Just next to Seljalandsfoss there are numerous other falls, such as the less-known Gljufrabui which is almost completely hidden behind a big rock. The only way to see it is to wind your way through the narrow gorge on the river stepping from one rock to another. From this place we started a completely unplanned random walk up a dirt road and got rewarded with a breath-taking view of the river down the deep gorge and wouldn't you know it - there were a couple of water falls as well. What a great place to have our picnic in absolute solitude, with no other tourists (or any other people for that matter, just sheep) anywhere to be seen. On our way back to the car we even encountered a herd of Icelandic horses running past with the surreally beautiful background of the falls. That was an unbelievable way to finish a wonderful day.
