Maltan talvi - Maltese Winter

Asuntomme sisälämpötila on näin ollen pysytellyt 12 asteessa.

Warming up on the sofa

One of the main reasons why foreigners move to Malta (one of our main reasons as well) is the climate. Our little island enjoys on average 3000 hours of sunshine a year (I googled it, didn't count it myself) which is among the highest figures in Europe. We arrived here late spring and we have been availing ourselves of the abundant sunshine and the temperature that was sometimes even too high to be pleasant. However everybody told us "brace yourselves - the winter is coming". We had six years of experience in living in South of Spain so we knew that the problem will be the temperature inside the apartment - sure, outdoors it is not cold, especially by Finnish standards, but if you have no heating and no proper insulation in the houses, it can be really unpleasantly cold and damp indoors. Malta was kind to us on our first winter though - we got to enjoy sunny weather with pleasant temperatures between 17 and 20 degrees all the way until the end of December. Finally the cold weather hit though and now for more than a week the temperatures dropped to less than 10 degrees in the night time and even in the day time it is around 12 or 14 degrees. Which means it's been pretty steady 12 degrees in our flat.

Running warms you up!

I am happy to report, however, that we seem to be more or less acclimatized to these circumstances. It doesn't mean that we are not cold, it just means that we accept it and live with it. It would be possible of course to get some sort of a gas or oil heater, but apparently it doesn't even help so much as the heat escapes due to poor insulation, it's expensive to use it and it creates more humidity which you then have to air out so I guess it's not really worth getting one. So we deal with the cold by wearing about four layers of clothing at all times plus a bathrobe, we drink a lot of hot tea and sit on the sofa wrapped up in blankets. It's also helpful to use the oven for cooking as it releases heat to the room. You have to work with what you got. On sunny days you can always sit on the balcony to warm up. Sometimes heavy rains and storms make winters even more fun, but this year it has hardly rained so even on the cold days we are enjoying the sun. It's also a great motivator to get out and get some fresh air, when it's warmer outside than inside.
