Kingston + Hamilton

Toronton urbaanin sykkeen jälkeen suuntasimme vähän rauhallisemmille vesille Kingstonin kaupunkiin parin tunnin junamatkan päässä. Näillä seuduilla meitä kiinnosti lähinnä Thousand Islands-kansallispuisto. Hostimme Jonathan tuli hakemaan meidät juna-asemalta ja vei meidät saman tien perheensä kesämökille, jossa kokkailtiin perheen kesken mahtava grilliateria. Uskaltauduimme tänä kauniin aurinkoisena päivänä jopa uimaan Lake Ontariossa, jonka olimme suosiolla jättäneet väliin Torontossa.

After the urban beat of Toronto we headed to calmer waters in the town of Kingston a couple of hours' train ride away. What we were mainly interested in was the Thousand Islands National Park. Our host Jonathan came to pick us up from the train station and took us right away to his family's lake house, where they cooked up a great bbq dinner. On this lovely sunny day we even dared to swim in Lake Ontario, which we had skipped earlier in Toronto.

Seuraavana päivänä suuntasimme suunnitellusti kansallispuiston suurimmalle saarelle, Wolfe Islandille, jonne pääsee kätevästi ilmaisella lautalla Kingstonin satamasta. Saari on suosittu päiväkohde niin turisteille kuin paikallisillekin. Lautta saapuu pieneen kylään, josta löytyy majoitusta, kahvilaa sekä polkupyörävuokrausta. Vuokrasimme paikan päällä pyörät saaren kiertelyä varten ja lähdimme liikenteeseen. Hieman epämiellyttävä yllätys oli se, että suurin osa ranta-alueista oli yksityisesti omistettua aluetta, jonne ei voinut mennä istuskelemaan rannalle ja uimaan mielensä mukaan. Löysimme kuitenkin viimein onneksi hiljaisen rannan, joka ei ainakaan nähdäkseni kuulunut kenellekään, joten asetuimme sinne nauttimaan auringosta ja uimaan kirkkaassa järvivedessä. Kun päätimme suunnata takaisin, kohtasimme seuraavan epämieluisan yllätyksen: kumi oli puhjennut toisessa pyörässä ja rengas oli täysin tyhjä. Oli siis mahdotonta polkea takaisin, joten jouduimme taluttamaan pyörän takaisin reilut 9 kilometriä... toki siihen sattui sitten vielä äkillinen ukkosmyrskykin, joka vielä kasteli meidät kaiken kukkuraksi. Onneksi ei salama sentään iskenyt!

Kingstonin keskusta on myös miellyttävä paikka kiertelyyn ja löytyy sieltä muutamia historiallisia rakennuksiakin, joten siellä meni mukavasti yksi aamupäivä. Se kuitenkin riitti ihan hyvin ja jatkoimme jälleen matkaa. 

Cycling on Wolfe Island

The following day we headed as planned to the biggest island of the national park, Wolfe Island, where you get easily by a free ferry from Kingston harbour. The island is a popular day trip for both tourists and locals alike. The ferry takes you to a small town where you can find a couple of cafes, restaurants and bike rental. We rented bikes to explore the island and off we went. It was a bit of an unpleasant surprise that most of the beaches on the island were privately owned land where you couldn't go to hang out and enjoy the lake. Finally we luckily found a quiet beach which didn't seem to belong to anybody so we settled in to enjoy the sun and swimming in the lake. Once we decided to head back, we were met with another unpleasant surprise: one of the bikes got a puncture and the tire was completely flat. That made it impossible to cycle back, so we had to push the bike for more than nine kilometres. Of course also a sudden thunderstorm appeared out of nowhere so we also got soaked on top of everything else. At least we didn't get hit by a lightning!

Kingston town centre is a pleasant place to stroll around and check out some historical buildings, so we spent one morning looking around. That was enough of Kingston for us, so we hit the road again!

Hamilton

Teollisuuskaupunkina tunnettu Hamilton noin tunnin matkan päässä Torontosta ei nauti kovin hyvästä maineesta - sitä pidetään rumana ja tylsänä kaupunkina, jonne ei vaikuta mennä. Itse kaupunki ei välttämättä vierailun arvoinen olekaan, mutta kaupunkia ympäröivät patikkareitit vesiputouksineen sekä mielenkiintoiset puistot kylläkin. Hostimme Kathryn ja John veivät meidät ystävällisesti moniin näistä paikoista. Kävimme heti ensimmäisenä iltanamme kasvitieteellisessä puutarhassa sekä todella kauniissa japanilaisessa puutarhassa nimeltään Rock Garden. Seuraavana aamuna menimme koirien kanssa (heillä on kolme koiraa) Ancaster-vesiputouksille pienelle patikkareissulle.

Rock Garden

Hamilton, located about an hour’s drive from Toronto is known as a factory town and does not hold much appeal - most people seem to consider it an ugly and boring town that is not worth visiting. Granted, maybe the town itself is not that interesting, but the surroundings include many nice hiking trails with waterfalls and lovely gardens. Our hosts Kathryn and John kindly took us to several nice places. Right away on our first evening they took us to the Royal Botanical Gardens and the lovely Japanese garden known as the Rock Garden. The next morning we went with the dogs (they have three dogs) to Ancaster water falls for a little hike.

Viimeisenä päivänämme ehdimme käydä kahdessakin läheisessä perinnepuistossa. Erittäin kohtuuhintaisella pääsylipulla (8 CAD per hlö) pääsee saman päivän aikana molempiin puistoihin. Crawford Laken vetonaula on uudelleenrakennettu natiivikylä long house-taloineen, joissa ennen asui Iroquoia-intiaaneja. Siellä vieraillessa oppii paljon heidän elämäntavastaan. Puistossa voi myös käydä pienellä patikkareissulla: järveä ympäröivä patikkareitti tarjoaa miellyttävät näköalat puuveistoksineen. Mountsberg Raptor Centre taas keskittyy eläimiin, etenkin petolintuihin: siellä pidetään paljon paikallisia petolintuja, jotka ovat syystä tai toisesta vammautuneet eivätkä pärjäisi luonnossa. Tässä puistossa asustaa myös iso biisonilauma, mutta biisonit piileskelivät jossain kaukana aidasta emmekä nähneet niistä hännänvilahdustakaan. Erilaiset kotkat, haukat ja pöllöt olivat kuitenkin riittävä syy tutustua puistoon. 

Hiking around Crawford Lake

On our last day we had time to visit not one but two different heritage parks nearby. The very reasonable entrance fee of 7 CAD got you into both parks during the same day. Crawford heritage park is a reconstructed native village where Iroquoian first nations used to live in their long houses. You can learn a lot about their life during your visit. There are also very pleasant hiking routes in the park, for example the one around the lake where apart from the scenery you also see wood carvings representing the endangered animals around the area. Mountsberg Raptor Centre is focused on animals, in particular raptors: the park is home to many raptors of different species that have been injured or orphaned for any reason and could not survive in the wild. Also a big herd of bison live in the park, but during our visit they were hiding somewhere far away from the fence and we didn’t even see a tip of a tail of any of them. However, the raptors alone were enough reason to visit.

En suosittelisi Hamiltonia kaupunkikohteeksi autottomalle, sillä itse kaupungissa ei nähdäkseni ollut oikein mitään tekemistä. Jos on auto käytössä ja luontokohteet kiinnostavat, se on hyvä majailupaikka, jossa tekemistä riittää helposti useammaksi päiväksi.

Iroquoian Long House at Crawford Lake

I wouldn’t recommend Hamilton for a city holiday if you don’t have transport, because as far as I could see there was not much to do in the city itself. However, if you do have a car and you are interested in natural or historical sights, Hamilton makes a good base for exploring nearby sights and you will easily be entertained for a couple of days.
