Ateenan Tunnelmia Osa 2 - Greetings from Athens Part 2
Uusi aamu, uudet nähtävyydet! Edellinen päivä oli ollut lämmin mutta pilvinen, mutta nyt aurinko helli meitä ja lämpötila lupasi kohota 29 asteen tienoille.
Nautittuamme hotellin hintaan kuuluneen ok aamiaisen (plussaa oikeasta vahvasta kahvista) suuntasimme ensimmäiseksi kohti Ateenan tärkeintä nähtävyyttä: Akropolis-kukkulaa ja sen muinaisia temppeleitä. Vinkkinä sanottakoon, että me menimme ihan vahingossa eri sisäänkäynnin kautta kuin suurin osa turisteista, eli Dionysoksen teatterin kautta emmekä pääsisäänkäynnin kautta - kyllä kannattaa mennä sitä kautta, sillä ei tarvinnut jonottaa ollenkaan eikä kukkulan sillä puolella ollut juuri ketään. Vietimme aikaa kaikessa rauhassa Dionysoksen teatterissa ja kiipeillen kukkulan etelärinteellä, ihastellen maisemia kaupungin yli ja ottaen kuvia, samalla ihmetellen, miten täällä ei ole turisteja ja keksien kaiken maailman teorioita selittämään tätä outoa ilmiötä. Noh, päästyämme Herodus Attikuksen Odeioniin asti totuus paljastui. Siellähän ne turistilaumat olivatkin! Alkoi olla jo huomattavasti vaikeampaa ottaa kuvia ilman, että taustalla oli kymmenittäin muita ihmisiä. Siitä huolimatta Odeion oli ihan mahtava näky.
Another day, another ancient monument to see! The previous day had been warm but cloudy but now the sun was shining from the clear blue sky and the temperature was going to go up to 29 degrees.
After enjoying the perfectly acceptable breakfast at the hotel (points for the real, strong coffee) we headed first to the most important sight in Athens: the Acropolis hill with its ancient temples. As a tip, we entered the sight (entirely by chance) from the opposite side than the main entrance - a great strategy as there was no queuing involved and there were hardly any people on that side. We were strolling casually around the Theatre of Dionysos and climbing the Southern slopes of the Acropolis, admiring the views over the city and taking pictures, all the while marvelling at the lack of tourists and coming up with different theories to explain this strange phenomenon. Well, once we made it until the Odeon of Herodes Atticus we stumbled onto the truth - this is where the tourist herds were at! It became considerably more difficult to take pictures without being photobombed by dozens of strangers. Despite all that the Odeon was a spectacular sight.
Jatkoimme ylös kiipeämistä helteessä ja ihmispaljoudessa Athene Niken temppelin ohi päästäksemme sen kaikkein kuuluisimman näyn luo: Parthenon, koko länsimaisen sivilisaation symboli. Harmillista, vaikkakin täysin ymmärrettävää, että kunnostustöiden takia nostokurjet peittivät osan näkymistä. Pakkohan tuota tuhansien vuosien ikäistä rakennusta on toki kunnostaa ja uudelleenrakentaa, mutta kyllä se vähän temppelin hohtoa pilaa. Joka tapauksessa, huolimatta epäromanttisista kunnostustöistä ja sadoista muista turisteista, se oli silti uskomattoman hieno ja taianomainen paikka. Ei voinut muuta sanoa, kuin vau ja sen sanoimmekin aika monta kertaa. Kukkulan huipulta avautui myös upeat näköalat kaupungin yli - ihmekös tuo, että Akropolisin näkee kohoavan kaupungin ylle melkeinpä mistä päin Ateenaa tahansa. Eivätkä ne temppelit siihen loppuneet, vielä löytyi Erekhtheion (sivuhuomautuksena mainittakoon, että kyllä nämä kreikkalaiset nimet ovat sitten vaikeita muistaa! Voitte varmaan arvata, millaisia väännöksiä tästä nimestä sain aikaan, kun yritin oppia muistamaan sen).
We continued climbing up among the crowds in the heat, passing the Temple of Athena Nike to get to the most famous of all sights; Parthenon, the symbol of the whole Western civilization. It is a pity, even though understandable, that due to reconstruction works parts of the temple was covered by cranes. Obviously it is necessary to do renovation and reconstruction to the temple that is thousands of years old, but the mundane sight of modern machinery does dampen the glory of it just a little bit. Despite that and the crowds it is still an incredible magical place. All you can say is "wow" and we did say that quite a few times. On top of the hill you also get great views over the city - no wonder you can always see the Acropolis rising over the city from almost anywhere in Athens. And that wasn't the end of the temples yet - there is also Erechtheion (a side note, damn these Greek names are difficult to remember! You can imagine what sort of variations of this particular name I managed to come up with when trying to memorize it...).
Kukkulalta toiselle - Akropolisin vieressä sijaitsee paljon matalampi kukkula nimeltään Pnyks, jolle kansalaiset aikoinaan kokoontuivat pitämään kokouksia. Sillekin piti toki kiivetä, vaikkei tällä kukkulalla mitään ihmeempää näkemistä ollutkaan. Sieltä oli lyhyt ja miellyttävä kävelymatka metsän halki muinaiseen Agoraan. Siellä riitti nähtävää, pienestä kirkosta (joka on tietenkin rakennettu myöhemmin) upeaan Hefaistoksen temppeliin (joka on parhaiten säilynyt antiikin ajan temppeli koko Kreikassa) ja Attaloksen Stoaan (joka on jälleenrakennettu ja jossa on nykyään pieni museo). Jos jollakulla olisi vain yksi päivä aikaa Ateenassa ja pitäisi suositella tälle henkilölle, mitä tehdä, sanoisin ehdottomasti että pitää käydä Akropolisissa ja Agorassa - aivan käsittämättömän mahtavia paikkoja.
From one hill to another - next to Acropolis there is a a lot smaller a hill called Pnyx which is where the citizens used to gather for meetings, voting etc. Of course we also had to climb up there, although there was not much to see. From there it was a short and pleasant walk through a forest to the Ancient Agora which was full of interesting things to see, from a small church (obviously built more recently) to the magnificent temple of Hephaestus (the best preserved ancient temple of the whole of Greece) and the Stoa of Attalos (reconstructed and hosting a small museum these days). If somebody just had one day in Athens and I would need to do recommendations on what to do, I would definitely advise them to visit both Acropolis and ancient Agora - they are both absolutely incredible places.
Siinähän se aamu meni ja pitkälle lounasajan ylikin - oli siis aika etsiä jotain suuhunpantavaa. Päätimme mennä Plakan alueelle Avocado-nimiseen kasvisravintolaan, jossa vegaaniburgerit ja ciabatat katosivat parempiin suihin sangen nopeasti. Tosi söpö paikka hippiviboineen ja positiivisine julisteineen (julisteessa kysyttiin muun muassa "oletko halannut kasvissyöjää tänään?" tästä tuli minulle lentävä lause aina, kun halusin halin vaimolta), mutta olipa taas valtava annos. Piti ryömiä johonkin rauhalliseen paikkaan sulattelemaan ruokaa ja matkalla osui silmään viihtyisännäköinen olutravintola, nimetty ytimekkäästi "Athens Beer". Sinne siis nauttimaan ensimmäiset tuopilliset kreikkalaista olutta - ei ollenkaan hassumpaa!
So this is how we spent the morning and well past lunch time - it was time to find something to eat. We decided to head back to Plaka to a vegetarian restaurant called Avocado, where we made vegan burger and ciabatta disappear with respectable speed. It was a really cute place with its hippie vibes and posters with positive messages (one poster asked "have you hugged a vegetarian today?" which became my favourite sentence for whenever I wanted a hug from the wife) but oh dear lord what a huge portion again. We needed to find a quiet spot to digest all that food and happened to see a nice-looking beer restaurant with a straight-forward name "Athens Beer". Finally it was the time for the first pint of Greek beer and it went down very nicely!
Vielä oli iltapäivää jäljellä ja mehän olemme hyvin tehokkaita turisteja, joten halusimme vielä suorittaa vähän nähtävyyksiä. Niinpä matkasimme metrolla Keremeikosin kaupunginosaan, jossa kävimme muinaisella hautuumaalla sekä pienessä arkeologisessa museossa. Hautuumaa oli mukavan rauhallinen vehreä paikka, vaikkakin niin raunioina ettei siellä saanut niin mahtavia vau-elämyksiä kuin aiemmin näkemissämme temppeleissä. Joka tapauksessa ihan kiva paikka chillata ja bongailla kilpikonnia - ai niin, ihan unohdin mainita edellisessä postauksessa, että yllättäen Ateenan puistoissa ja muilla vihreillä alueilla näkee maakilpikonnia ryömimässä kiireettömästi (tai mistä minä tiedän, ehkä ne menevät mielestään lujaa) ympäriinsä. Kun olimme ihan coolin hipsterikaupunginosan Gazin kulmilla, päätimme katsastaa paikallisen kahvilatarjonnan. Kyllähän siellä olikin kivaa kahvilabaaria vieri vieressä, mutta cooliudella on näköjään hintansa - kieltämättä ihana ja herkullinen espresso freddo (kyllä, kylmää espressoa - ai että tekee hyvää kuumuuden keskellä) maksoi 3,5€ ja se oli halvin kahvi, mitä hinnastosta löytyi. No, kaupan päälle tuli sentään pala suklaakakkua, joten annettakoon heille heidän hintansa anteeksi.
Se oli tehokas toinen päivä Ateenassa, mutta vielä oli paljon nähtävää jäljellä!
Since we still had some time and energy left, being the very efficient tourists we are, we decided to get some more sightseeing done. We hopped on the metro to go to Kerameikos, where we visited the ancient cemetery and the small archeological museum. The cemetery was a pleasant tranquil place to visit, although it was in such ruins that we didn't quite get the wow-factor as we did in the temples we had seen before. In any case it was a nice green area to chill and watch tortoises - oh yes, I actually forgot to mention in the previous posts that, surprisingly, in the parks and other green spaces of Athens you can see tortoises making their unhurried way (on the other hand what do I know, maybe they are rushing at their top speed) around the place. Since we were just around the corner from the cool hipster neighbourhood of Gazi we decided to check out the cafes in search of a nice cup of coffee. Sure enough, there was a cute cafe after another but apparently being cool comes with a price - the lovely espresso freddo (yes, cold espresso - that really hits the spot in the heat!) cost 3,5€ and that was the cheapest coffee on the menu. Oh well, at least we got a complimentary piece of chocolate cake to go with it so I will forgive them for this price.
That was an efficient second day in Athens but there is a lot more to come!
