Joogaa ja rantaelämää - Life's a Beach (and Yoga) on Big Island

Vietettyämme neljä ihanaa päivää Honolulussa lensimme lyhyen matkan Big Islandille, joka on nimensä mukaisesti paljon Oahu-saarta suurempi. Big Islandilla tarvitsee välttämättä auton, sillä julkisilla liikennevälineillä siellä ei pitkälle pötki, joten mekin otimme heti lentokentältä auton päästäksemme Airbnb-majoitukseemme Konassa.

After four lovely days in Honolulu we took the short flight to Big Island, which earns its name by being considerably bigger than Oahu. You need a car in Big Island, as there is not much public transport, so we rented a car  to get to our Airbnb accommodation.

We started our first day following the recommendation of our Airbnb host and headed over to Greenwell Coffee Farm, where you can do a complimentary tour of the farm followed by tasters of their numerous coffee types. Kona coffee from Hawaii is famous, as the rich volcanic soil makes coffee grow particularly well. The tour was fine, although not particularly thorough, and the coffee tasted lovely both before and after the tour.

Kahaluu Beach Park

We spent the afternoon on Kahaluu Beach Park, which was not exactly the most beautiful beach in the world with its dark sand and sharp rocks, but it was great for snorkling. It was crowded though, and we decided to head to a quieter beach called Aiopio Fish Trap. Getting to the beach required a little walk through a forest, and there we could enjoy the white sand beach without the crowds.

After a couple of days in Kona we continued our way towards Pahoa. Along the way we stopped at the Volcanoes National Park with two active volcanoes: Mauna Kea and Kilauea. The weather was not on our side, as it was raining all the time, but what can you do - this was our only chance to visit this national park. In Volcanoes National Park you can drive along the Crater Rim Drive or do some of the numerous short hikes. We did a short walk by ourselves before joining a guided tour down the Kilauea caldera, which was super interesting.

Seuraavat neljä päivää vietimmekin Pahoassa Kirpal Meditation and Ecological Center -joogaleirillä, mikä oli juuri sitä mitä silloin tarvitsimmekin: lepoa, joogaa, rauhaa ja superterveellistä vegaaniruokaa. Joogakeskus sijaitsi lähellä laavavirtoja, jotka olivat vastikään katkaisseet useita teitä matkallaan kohti merta. Kävimme kävelyillä laavavirtojen tienoilla ja vietimme aikaa laavahiekkaisella Punalu'u-biitsillä, jonka valtavat aallot eivät tosin houkutelleet uimaan.

Room with a view at the yoga retreat

We spent the following four days in Pahoa doing a yoga retreat on Kirpal Meditation and Ecological Center which was exactly what we needed at this point of the trip: peace and quiet, yoga and super healthy plant-based food. The yoga centre was located close to a lava flow which had recently cut off several roads on their way to the ocean. We walked around the lava flows and spent some time on the black sand beach of Punalu'u, although the huge waves deterred us from swimming.

So, the road is like closed or something..?

On the Hapuna Beach

Our last haven on Big Island was the tiny village of Hawi in the north of the island. Along the way we enjoyed stopping at the Rainbow Falls in Hilo as well as the Waipio Valley. We had planned to do some hiking in the valley, but as the weather kept going from tropical downpours to sunshine and then back again, we decided to forego the hiking and just admired the scenery from the view point. Our last full day in Hawaii was spent on the most beautiful beach on the island, Hapuna, which was really lovely and definitely one of the best beaches I have ever seen.

Parin päivän päästä Alaska Airlines lähetti meille molemmille omat parin sadan dollarin alennukset seuraavaa lentoa varten ihan pyytämättä ja odottamatta, joten korvaukset olivat ainakin ihan kohdallaan - pitää siis seuraavan vuoden aikana matkata taas USA:an käyttämään niitä alennuksia!

The only open-air airport I have ever seen

Almost two weeks in Hawaii was an amazing experience, and I would gladly return one day. Actually we had the opportunity to enjoy the island extra eight hours, as our flight to Texas was that much delayed. Alaska Airlines gave us a couple of food vouchers each, so we didn't have to go hungry while waiting - the only problem was that Kona airport is a weird open-air sort of an airport, lacking a roof and walls and therefore lacking air-conditioning. It did get rather hot while waiting around, especially as we were dressed for a plane (I usually find planes freezing cold) and not for lounging around in the hot sun. However, a couple of days later Alaska Airlines sent us a discount code worth a couple of hundreds of dollars each for our next flight, so the compensation was pretty decent - it means we need to travel to US again within the next year to use our discount!
