Toinen päivä Petrassa - Petra, Day 2

Getting to the Monastery

As I mentioned in my previous post, we saw the most famous sight of Petra, the Treasury, at the beginning of our visit. However, the Treasury is by no means the only incredible sight of Petra, as a considerably longer walk from the main entrance would take you to the wonder that is known as the Monastery. On our second day in Wadi Musa we took the advice of our hotel's owner and got a transport (15 dinars per car) to the back entrance of Petra, from where it would be a lot shorter of a walk until the Monastery and also you avoid walking back and forth through the whole of Petra. Although we did find the price a bit steep, after the exhausting walk the previous day we figured that it was worth it. The owner himself got in his jeep and drove us there, with part of the way going through such terrain that I wouldn't have thought any sort of a car could handle it. According to him, the walk from the back entrance of Petra would take about 45 minutes until the Monastery - well, it took us about an hour and a half, although we did take a slight detour at one point and obviously stopped to take loads and loads of pictures. In the early morning the temperature was rather bearable, but soon it started to get blisteringly hot again. We encountered herds of sheep and goats with their shepherds, but hardly any other hikers. Once we got to the Monastery, the sight was truly breath-taking - as amazing and intricate as the Treasury but in even bigger scale. We sat for a good while there just admiring this incredible sight - it was blissfully quiet and hassle-free.

The Great Temple

As we continued our journey through Petra we were ever so grateful for the ride offered by the hotel - the tourists we encountered were without fail exhausted, sweaty and red-faced, and whoever met us always asked "how much further is it?" We also saw the Great Temple along the way, which was absolutely awe-inspiring in its own right. Once reaching the area that we had already seen the day before we concluded we had seen everything we wanted to see, the mid-day heat was getting truly unbearable and four hours of hiking had really done us in, so we headed out of Petra to Wadi Musa to have lunch, after which we returned gladly to our hotel and the lovely air-conditioned room. Petra is an absolutely amazing and unforgettable place, but man, it is exhausting!
