Upea Red Canyon ja Punainenmeri - Amazing Red Canyon and Red Sea

Heräsimme Eilatissa sohvasurffaushostiemme luona tapojemme mukaisesti varhain, jotta ehdimme bussiasemalle klo 8 bussiin kohti Red Canyon -kanjonia.

It's a pretty deserted desert all right...

We woke up in Eilat at our couchsurfing hosts' place early as usual, so that we could make it to the bus station in time to catch the 8am bus towards the Red Canyon. It is only about a 20 kilometre journey from Eilat to Red Canyon, but from the bus stop along the road it is another 2 kilometre walk until the start of the actual hiking route. However, we didn't need to walk for long until a minibus filled with a friendly Israeli family stopped next to us and the driver offered us a ride until the start of the hiking route, which we accepted gratefully.

Spot the rock hyrax in the picture!

The hiking route through the canyon itself was only little more than a kilometre, but we took the longer route through Wadi Shani, so it took us altogether a couple of hours to walk it. We saw right at the beginning of the hike a rock hyrax, a little marmot-like creature, which was unfortunately way too busy to pose for a picture. We did manage to take a quick pic though - can you spot him in the above picture? Apart from that and lizards, we didn't see any other animals along the walk. We did, however, see absolutely breath-taking rock formations all over the place! The canyon walls, carved by erosion, totally reminded us of The Antelope Canyon in the USA, where we visited last year. The masses of people that plague The Antelope Canyon were completely absent, though - we hardly met any other hikers. The stark beauty of the desert and the mountains was just stunning.

Coral Beach Nature Reserve

As we headed out in the morning, it was surprisingly chilly, but it didn't take long until the mercury started to get close to the by-now familiar 37 C. As it was getting to noon, we decided that was enough of hiking for today and it was time to head to the beach. We had no idea about the bus time tables and there seemed to be very little traffic on the road leading to Eilat. Regardless of that, it didn't take many minutes until we were offered a ride by a national park employee, who happened to be headed towards Coral Beach. That's what I call a great coincidence! As the name Coral Beach suggests, there is a coral reef that offers a great opportunity for snorkling nearby. First we checked out the public beach that is free to enter, but it was absolutely packed and offered no shade unless you paid for a sun chair. Therefore we opted for the Coral Beach Nature Reserve, where you get a chair in a shady place, as well as access to toilets and showers by paying the 35 shekel entrance free per person. There is also a little shop on the premises for snacks, drinks and hiring snorkling and diving gear. Luckily we had borrowed a snorkling mask from our hosts, so we didn't need to hire anything.

We spent an absolutely lovely afternoon snorkling in the crystal clear water, that was filled with colourful fish and the coral reef itself was spectacular. This was quite possibly the best of all of my snorkling experiences, as it was so convenient not having to take a boat trip in order to see fantastic sights and the water temperature was perfect as well. At the end of the lovely day we had a delicious falafel with Isolde and Assaf. This was the end of our time in Israel for now, as the following day it was time for new adventures in Jordan!
