Everglades & Key West

From Miami Beach we started our journey towards Everglads and Key West. We had decided to cut the journey so that we stayed in a cheap motel very close to the National Park entrance, got an early start, and after touring Everglades drove straight to Key West. This worked out pretty well, as due to terrible traffic the mere 70 km distance from Miami Beach seemed to take absolute forever. However, from our motel it was only about 15 minutes' drive to the Ernest F. Coe Visitor Centre of the national park, so we could start exploring the park early. From the centre there was a free shuttle bus to certain locations around the park. We decided to get off at Anhiga hiking trail, which is a very short (a bit more than a kilometre) boardwalk around the wetlands. It was promised that around this route one can see a lot of wildlife and that turned out to be true - we had barely started the hike before we spotted the first alligator lounging around right next to the boardwalk. Later on we saw three more alligators, all of whom were taking it very easy - none of them seemed to move a muscle as we were watching. We also saw many kinds of birds along the walk. Later we took another, even shorter hike called Gumbo Limbo trail, but didn't happen to see any wildlife along that one.

Our airboat

Parrots at the Alligator farm

After this little bit of hiking we headed to the imaginatively named Everglades Alligator Farm where we wanted to do an airboat ride. Airboats are those iconic vehicles that are probably featured in every single movie or series taking place in Florida. That was an absolute blast, probably one of the most fun experiences of the whole trip! The boat was travelling at amazing speed and doing stomach-lurching turns, splashing water all over the place. Apart from the boat ride, there were obviously also alligators on the farm (as we had just seen them in nature, it was a bit less exhilarating - especially since I learnt they are bred for meat), snakes and many sorts of parrots.

On the airboat

Valitettavasti Key West on kuuluisan kallis eikä siellä pienen budjetin matkailija siellä kauaa kestä. Kävimme kuitenkin katsomassa Yhdysvaltain eteläisimmän kohdan sekä eteläisimmän biitsin, jossa hengailimme jonkin aikaa. Hemingwayn taloa silmäiltiin vain ulkopuolelta.

Cute houses a la Key West

The closest to Hemingway's house I got

The 3-hour drive to Key West along Overseas Highway is an experience in itself. The 44 bridges connecting the tiny islands to one another really make you feel like you are driving on the sea. It was surprising to see that although we were there in December 2017, the damages done by hurricane Irma back in September were still visible. There were enormous mounts of debris gathered by the road - I have no idea what was going to happen to all that. However, Key West had such a lovely care-free atmosphere that it was really hard to imagine the threat the residents live under every hurricane season. The gorgeous little wooden houses create such a charming little-town feel that was completely different from many other US cities I had visited. Key West is a lovely place to stay, if you have the budget for it - unfortunately it is infamously expensive, and a low-budget traveller will soon feel the sting. We just stayed the two nights and checked out the southernmost point of US, as well as the southernmost beach where we hung out for a while. We opted not to visit the Hemingway house, but just saw it from outside.

They are really into this "southern-most" thing....

Driving back from the Keys

Reminders of the hurricane

Key West was the last destination for us on this six-months trip. After this all we had to look forward to was driving back to Miami, where we had, very untypically of us, dedicated an entire day for shopping at the gigantic Sawgrass Mills Mall - eight hours of frantic shopping wasn't even enough for that enormous place. However, in the evening we were flying to Finland (by the way, I definitely do not recommend flying from US to Finland in the middle of the darkest winter - jetlag was an absolute nightmare and it was impossible to re-set the body clock with no daylight!) and then back to reality. This, for us, meant going back to Malta and looking for new jobs.
