Islannin budjettireissu - Iceland on a Budget

Obviously what you need to take into consideration when planning your Iceland trip is that Iceland is horribly expensive. It probably feels expensive compared to most countries in Europe but especially since we are coming from, erm, almost Africa, the prices seem horrendous. We are fighting this by meticulous advance planning - in fact we booked all accommodation more than six months in advance which is unusually early even for us. When travelling to Iceland in June I cannot recommend spontaneous travel style - accommodation, car hire and different tours and programmes might be already booked out and if anything is still available, the price tag will be sky-high. Below you can see some example of the prices we are paying.

Lennot

Koska aloitamme matkamme Unkarin tukikohdastamme, saimme ainakin varattua sangen kohtuuhintaiset suorat lennot Budapestista Reykjavikiin Wizzairin kautta, 165€ per henkilö matkatavaroineen päivineen. Reykjavikista on myös hyvä lentää Kanadaan (mikä on yksi syy, miksi aloitamme varsinaisen turneemme Islannista) ja saimme erittäin halvat lennot suoraan Halifaxiin Icelandairilta, 180€ per henkilö matkatavaroiden kanssa. Lentoaikakaan ei ole paha, 4,5 tuntia.

Flights

As we are starting off from our base in Hungary, we managed to book very reasonably priced flights directly from Budapest to Reykjavik with Wizzair, 165€ per person including luggage and all. You can also book very good flights from Reykjavik to Canada (which is one reason why we decided to start the tournee from Iceland) so we are flying with Icelandair direct from Reykjavik to Halifax for 180€ per person including luggage. The flight is only 4,5 hours which is great.

Majoitus

Accommodation

By booking well more than six months in advance we were still able to find accommodation with a range of 70€ - 100€ per night in rooms usually described as "basic", "small", "budget" or something similar. These rooms typically come with shared bathroom and in one place even sheets are not included in the price but you need to sleep in your sleeping bag. And yes, these were pretty much the cheapest options we could find. There are loads of Airbnb options available but with the service charges and cleaning costs they ended up costing more than 100€ per night so we went with hostels. Couchsurfing would be an option of course but there is always an element of insecurity about it as it is possible that the host might cancel last minute and then we would be really screwed. Naturally in Iceland there is a huge demand for couches as there are so many tourists and the prices are so high, so the hosts are super busy and the chances of finding last minute emergency couch are slim. Most likely we will stick to the hostels we have already booked to be on the safe side.

Autonvuokraus

Lisävakuutuksesta maksamalla omavastuu pienenee, mutta me ostamme aina lisävakuutuksen erikseen netistä, mikä tulee paljon halvemmaksi. Jos jokin menee pieleen, vakuutus kattaa kuitenkin kaikki vahingot. Kirjanpitäjäni arvioi bensoihin menevän suunnilleen 200€ vielä tuohon päälle.

Car Hire

Car hire is another big expense in Iceland but actually it doesn't work out more expensive than buses (as also the bus tickets cost a fortune) and while I am in general a fan of the public transport, it is not really a convenient way to get around in Iceland. Hitch-hiking is apparently very popular but we don't want to risk not getting where we want when we want, as we have limited time in Iceland. Different car-sharing platforms are popular so probably we will take on other people to share petrol costs, if we have matching travel plans.

We have booked the most affordable option through Hasso Car for 10 days at the price of 450€. The low price correlates with high liability and they will pre-authorize our credit card for the sum of 3000€ which will be released afterwards provided that there are no problems. You can reduce the liability when paying more for over-the-counter insurance but we always book a separate car hire insurance online which works out much cheaper. Should something go wrong (fingers crossed it won't!) we are anyway covered by the insurance. My accountant estimated that we would spend around 200€ on petrol.

Ruokailu

Ravintolahintoja katsellessa ja muiden kokemuksia kuunnellessa oikein naurattaa. Jostain kasvisrisotosta saisi maksaa 30€ pintaan, pizzasta joutuu pulittamaan 20€ luokkaa ja kotimainen oluttuoppi maksaisi 10€ pintaan. Näin ollen mitä todennäköisimmin emme edes tule näkemään ravintolan sisäpuolta Islannissa. Islannin kulinaristisista antimista nauttimisen sijaan aikomuksena on täyttää matkalaukku Unkarissa hyvin säilyvällä ruoalla ja alkoholipitoisilla juomilla. Kuppinuudeleita ja säilykkeitä kehiin, kyllä niillä 10 päivää pärjää! Siihen lisäksi ostetaan paikallisista ruokakaupoista tuoretavaraa tarpeen mukaan.

Food

When checking the restaurant prices and hearing other people's experiences of the food costs in Iceland I can hardly contain my amusement. A vegetarian risotto goes for about 30€, a pizza around 20€ and a pint of local beer costs around 10€. As a result we are not likely to be seen inside a restaurant in Iceland. Instead of indulging in the delights of the local cuisine, we are planning to fill a suitcase in Hungary with food and alcoholic beverages. Bring on cup noodles and canned food, we can managed 10 days with them! To supplement on that we can always buy fresh stuff at the grocery stores as required.

Sights and Tours

Moving on to the most important thing on any trip! Thankfully most of the sights in Iceland are just purely natural sights that nobody needs to pay to see or experience. As all the other necessities are so expensive, it is a great relief that you can enjoy hiking in the spectacular scenery, seeing the waterfalls, the glaciers and the puffins without any costs. Here you can see the few things that we are actually paying for.

Zodiac boat tour on Fjallsárlón glacier lagoon 54€ per person: this glacier lagoon is a bit further away, a bit less known and therefore a lot cheaper to visit than the famous Jokullsárlón glacier lagoon, where similar boat trip would have cost 79€ per person.

Entrance ticket to the Blue Lagoon Spa 50€ per person: to get the ticket with this price you had to book online months in advance. Needless to say this is the cheapest possible ticket - there a plenty of more luxurious options including for example drinks, treatments and/or meals.

Apart from these we might still do a couple of hours' horseback riding trip (around 80€ per person) and possibly visit a museum or two but we haven't made any decisions yet. Most of the time we will be just enjoying the beautiful nature which doesn't cost a thing!
