Matkasuunnitelma Osa 3: Manitoba Travel Plan Part 3: Manitoba

Kuten edellisessä postauksessa mainitsinkin, Torontosta eteenpäin saammekin nauttia junailun huumasta koko rahan edestä - matka Winnipegiin kun kestää rapeat 36 tuntia. Lepuutamme junassa puutuneita takamuksiamme muutaman päivän ajan Manitoban pääkaupungissa Winnipegissä, jonka nimen jääkiekkofanit tunnistanevat NHL-liigasta. Mehän emme lukeudu lätkäfanien joukkoon, mutta kaupunkia kehutaan yllättävän kiinnostavaksi metropoliksi keskellä preeriaa.

As mentioned in the previous post, from Toronto onwards we get to enjoy the delight of travelling by train to the max, as the journey to Winnipeg takes about 36 hours. We will be resting our weary bodies for a few days in the capital of Manitoba, the name of which should be familiar at least to ice hockey fans. While we are no ice hockey enthusiasts, Winnipeg is deemed to be a surprisingly interesting metropolis in the middle of the prairie where I am sure we will find fascinating things to see and do.

Winnipeg

Just cannot get enough of the train...

Hopefully we will not be fed up with the train yet at this stage as our next train journey will take all of 48 hours - we are heading to the northernmost point you can reach by train, the town of Churchill by Hudson Bay. It wouldn't even be possible to reach the town by car as there are no roads built to reach it so the only options are the train or a flight. Sure, flying there from Winnipeg would have saved us a lot of time compared to the tediously slow train, but checking the flight prices quickly brought us back down to earth - we are sticking with the train. As previously mentioned, I will come back to the topic of travelling by train in Canada and why we ended up with this plan in a later post.

Polar bear in the summer

Belugas watching the tourists

One might be wondering, why on earth are we heading to this remote corner of the world in the first place? The answer: polar bears! Churchill markets itself as the polar bear capital of the world as it is one of the few places in the world where it is possible to see polar bears relatively close to human habitation. Granted, summer is not the ideal season to see them, as polar bears gather by the Hudson Bay in the late autumn, while waiting for the bay to freeze over. However, even in the summer time polar bears are often seen on day trips on the tundra. Apart from polar bears there are other magnificent animals that gather in Hudson Bay in the summer time: beluga whales! Whether or not you see polar bears is up to your luck, but as far as I understand you cannot miss the belugas this time of the year. There are many activities getting you close to the whales, such as kayaking or snorkelling. There is no chance of us getting into the freezing water with the whales (even in mid-summer you can hardly wish for temperatures exceeding 18C in Churchill) but we are certainly taking a boat trip to see them. After spending four days in Churchill it is time to go back to where we came from - yes, another 48 hours on the train to return to Winnipeg!

Tundra Buggy that will take us safely to see wildlife on the tundra!

Our journey continues towards west. On the way we will stop for a few days in Saskatoon, the largest city of Saskatchewan province. I am not sure if the nick name "Paris of the Prairies" is ironic or not, however at least according to Lonely Planet the city is full of hidden treasures. In any case for us the main reason to stop there is to take a break from the train and just chill a few days, but maybe Saskatoon will surprise us! Afterwards we are anyway headed to one of the sure highlights of the trip: The Rocky Mountains and the national parks of Banff and Jasper!

  1. Kuulostaapa aika reissulta!
