Osa Seitsemänkymmentäkaksi – Part Seventy-Two: Sihanoukville & Koh Rong Sanloem

Evening swim at our hotel in Sihanouville

Sihanoukville is Cambodia’s main, if not quite only, beach destination, which is also very popular among well-to-do Cambodians. We were not really sure about what to expect, since we heard and read completely opposite opinions from different sources. Some people said it’s a lovely paradise with unspoilt white beaches. Others called it tourism development nightmare where a beautiful area has been completely ruined by excessive building of hotels and for the lack of proper waste management, sewage is being pumped directly into the sea amongst the tourists frolicking in the water. In any case, we were going there mainly to attend a yoga and meditation course, so the beach or the town itself was not really all that important for us. We did have one evening in town before hiding away for the course and we went to the Serendipity Beach for dinner. The beach was packed with restaurants serving up BBQ menus of seafood and other stuff. It was really lovely to sit in a comfy easy chair on the beach enjoying a beer and a great dinner. The only nuisance was the constant stream of hawkers and beggars. Within about seven minutes we were offered island trips, bracelets, foot massage, some sort of fire work things, sunglasses and other random items, apart from which a couple of women carrying little babies came asking for money. I suppose you would never get a relaxing lie-in on this beach since probably the day time is even busier than the evenings.

Vagabond Temple

Preparing for a yoga session

The following morning we got up bright and early at 6:15 to get to the Vagabond Temple where we spent the next week doing yoga. We had normally two yoga sessions per day, about two hours at a time, so it was pretty tough going. We woke up at 6am every morning into silence that was supposed to be kept until breakfast. The idea was that you can reflect on your own thoughts rather than fill your head with chit-chat. From 6:30 to 7am everybody could do any form of self-practise they wished – it could be meditation, reading some spiritual material, writing a journal or alternatively doing something physical like going for a walk or a run. Whatever you chose to do it was meant to be something to encourage spiritual growth. The morning yoga session started at 7am and went on until breakfast time at 9am. I usually had a banana in the morning before yoga and surprisingly enough that kept me going until breakfast, even though I was afraid beforehand that I might just faint doing 2 hours of yoga before eating anything. At 11am we had karma yoga which doesn’t mean physical postures, but doing something selfless to benefit other people. For instance once we went to the nearby beach to clean up the incredible amount of rubbish that accumulates there. Mid-day there would normally be some philosophical talks but during our week there was only one. Other times it was replaced either by reiki healing or a certain project we didn’t want to participate in (American-style “envision your goals and make an action plan on how to get there” type of thing), so we didn’t get much out of the philosophy talks. I had expected a little more Buddhist teachings (like we had on the Nepalese retreat) but this centre just has a different emphasis, more on yoga and meditation, and that’s fine of course. The afternoon yoga session started at 4:30pm and went on until dinner time at 6pm, the last programme of the day was meditation at 7pm. Other times you had free time to do as you please, go to the beach (which we did almost every day) or hang out wherever you like to while reading a book or chilling.

We really enjoyed the course, it was lovely and relaxing to stay put for a whole week without worrying about anything. Even though the days had quite a lot of programmes, on the other hand we had plenty of time to read, write and chat about things. Plenty of yoga, breathing exercises and super-healthy vegan food without any caffeine or alcohol was also very conducive to our physical well-being. I am an absolute beginner in meditating though and I usually cannot really focus longer than a few seconds at a time, but I guess practise makes perfect also on this front. It was actually pretty amusing to see what random paths my thoughts took when I was trying hard not to think about anything. Now we are determined to integrate yoga and meditation also to our normal lives (as soon as we get some of that “normal life” stuff).

Yoga attempts in the water

Kurssin jälkeen olimme päättäneet mennä jollekin saarelle nauttimaan rantaelämästä, mielellään jotain rauhallisempaa kuin Sihanoukvillen kiireiset rannat. Yhden kurssilaisen suosituksesta päädyimme sitten pienelle Koh Rong Sanloem-saarelle.

On the boat on the way to the island

After the course we had decided to go to an island to enjoy some beach time, preferably to a quieter place than the busy (and dirty) beaches of Sihanoukville. Based on a recommendation from one of our course mates we ended up on the small island of Koh Rong Sanloem. We booked a luxury tent from Sun Eco Village that we believed to be more bug-proof than the bamboo huts. The tent was perfectly comfortable with a proper king size mattress and solar-powered light and fan (which we finally didn’t even need, the temperature was perfectly pleasant). The resort organized the return boat trip (25 USD per person) which included a pick-up from the hotel in Sihanoukville, buffet lunch and a stop for snorkelling (which we didn’t do this time). The island made it straight to the top of my favourite places ever: absolutely stunning piece of paradise. There is no permanent inhabitation and therefore no roads, no traffic, not many people; there were a few little resorts along the beach with their bungalows, a couple of restaurants and that’s it. Otherwise there was practically nothing, no services and nothing to shop. What you had in shedloads, however, was gorgeous white sand beaches (spectacularly free of rubbish, hallelujah!), crystal clear water, jungle in the middle of the island and peace and quiet. We spent time lying on the beach, reading books, going for walks along the beach or through the jungle to the other side of the island, swam in the sea, played cards and relaxed. Incredibly gorgeous place, we can only hope that it stays like this and will not be ruined by further tourism development.

Entertainment on the island

The only thing overshadowing our time on the island paradise was that I had a wound on my ankle (it was a mosquito bite that I had scratched until it bled) that started to get infected. In the tropics this happens pretty quickly and at that point disinfecting is not enough. As the whole foot started to swell up I had to face it that a trip to the doctor’s was required. We had to leave the island a couple of hours earlier than planned to get to the doctor in Sihanoukville. With the antibiotics I will hopefully soon be back in action!
