Varadero - paratiisi vai pettymys? Varadero - a paradise or a disappointment?
Viimeinen varsinainen kohteemme Kuubassa oli kuuluisa Varaderon paratiisiranta. Aina, kun tien päällä oli vaikeaa ja turhauttavaa (eli usein), hoimme toisillemme "mutta sitten Varaderossa tulee olemaan ihanaa, siellä voidaan vain rentoutua ja nauttia, vielä jaksaa kun sitten päästään Varaderoon..." Mainittakoon vielä muuten pohjustukseksi, että koko aikamme Kuubassa oli ollut tukahduttavan kuuma ja odotimme innolla rantakohteeseen pääsyä. Säiden jumalat kuitenkin nauroivat meille päin naamaa, sillä juuri kun saavuimme Varaderoon, Kuuban ylle iski aivan harvinaisen kylmä rintama.
Our last actual destination in Cuba was the famous paradise beach: Varadero. Whenever things were getting tough and frustrating on the road (which was often), we were telling each other "but in Varadero it will be lovely, there we can just relax and enjoy ourselves, once we get through this we will be in Varadero..." I would also like to mention that the whole entire time we had spent in Cuba, it had been suffocatingly hot and we were really looking forward to being on the beach. However, the gods of weather were laughing in our faces - just as we arrived in Varadero, a highly unusual cold front hit Cuba.
Joissain osissa maata vettä tuli ihan kaatamalla aiheuttaen tulvia, myrskyt aiheuttivat tuhoja ja niin edes päin, joten siinä mielessä Varaderossa ei ollut mitenkään hirvittävän huono ilma. Se oli kuitenkin riittävän kylmä, että uutistenlukija vaikutti järkyttyneeltä hokiessaan "temperaturas muy, muy bajas" - eli lämpötilat olivat jossain 20 asteen tietämillä ja kovan tuulen ansiosta se tuntui kieltämättä aika kylmältä. Ranta oli kieltämättä kaunis ja turkoosi meri näytti kovan aallokonkin kanssa hienolta. Myrskytuulet olivat kuitenkin heittäneet rannalle runsaasti kaikenlaista roskaa merikasvillisuudesta muoviroskaan eikä auringonpalvojia juuri sotkuisella rannalla näkynyt. Menimme toki rannalle, koska mitä siellä Varaderossa muutakaan tekisi, mutta harrastimme kerrospukeutumista - bikinit alle, farkut ja toppi päälle ja takki sekä huivi koko komeuden päälle. Välillä, jos aurinko paistoi tarpeeksi lämpimästi eikä sillä hetkellä tuullut, tarkeni ottaa vähän kerroksia pois. Hetkellisesti ehti paistattelemaan jopa bikineissä!
In some parts of the country it was pouring down rain causing floods, the storms caused a lot of damage and so on, so in fairness Varadero was not hit very badly in terms of weather. However, it was cold enough for the newsreader to act shocked, talking about "temperaturas muy, muy bajas" - which meant temperatures of around 20 degrees Celsius coupled with strong wind, which did feel rather cool. The beach was undeniably beautiful and the turquoise sea looked gorgeous even with huge waves. Nonetheless, the strong winds had brought up a lot of debris on the beach, both sea vegetation and plastic garbage, and unsurprisingly the beach was rather vacant of sun-worshipers. We did go to the beach, as I don't know what else you would do in Varadero, but dressing in layers was the key. Bikinis, then jeans and a top, covered by a jacket and a scarf. At times, when the sun was beating down stronger and it wasn't so windy just at that point, we could peel off some layers. For short periods of time we could even sun-bathe in a bikini!
Ilmojen lisäksi Varadero yllätti myös muulla tapaa. Olin kuvitellut sen olevan enemmän kuten mikä tahansa turistien suosima rantakohde missä tahansa päin maailmaa, ja vähemmän "kuubalainen". Oletin myös, että tarjolla olisi muita paikkoja enemmän esimerkiksi erilaisia etnisiä ravintoloita tms. Tunnelma oli kuitenkin melko samanlainen, kuin muissakin käyntikohteissamme, paitsi että kaikkialla oli paljon vähemmän ihmisiä. Osittain johtui tietenkin ilmoista, että paikka vaikutti yllättävän hiljaiselta, mutta toisaalta varmaan useimmat turistit olisivat varanneet matkansa paljon ennen tämän omituisen säärintaman ilmestymistä. En siis tiedä, mistä syystä Varaderossa oli niin kuolemanhiljaista.
Apart from the weather, Varadero also surprised us in other ways. I had imagined beforehand it being more like any touristy beach destination anywhere in the world and less "Cuban" somehow. I had assumed there would be more facilities than in other places in Cuba, such as ethnic restaurants and the like. However, the atmosphere was pretty similar to the other places we had been to in Cuba, except that there were much less people everywhere. For sure the less-than-great weather had something to do with how surprisingly quiet the place appeared, but on the other hand probably most tourists would have booked their trips much before the strange weather front reached Cuba. So I have no idea how come it was so deathly quiet in Varadero.
Parempien säiden aikana kyseessä on varmasti kaunis rantakohde - meille Kuuban matkan huipentuma oli varsinainen antikliimaksi. En ole missään nimessä negatiivinen ihminen ja pyrin aina näkemään lasin puolitäytenä. Tässä vaiheessa oli kuitenkin pakko sanoa, että positiivisin juttu oli se, että olimme piakkoin lähdössä pois Kuubasta. Kuuba ottaa koville ja tässä vaiheessa olin hyvin valmis lähtemään ihan muualle - tässä tapauksessa siis Floridaan!
With better weather this would undoubtedly be a beautiful beach destination - for us the highlight of our Cuban trip turned out to be a total anti-climax. I am definitely not a negative person and I always aim at seeing the glass half-full. Nonetheless, at this stage I had to say that looking at the bright side of life meant the fact that we were soon leaving Cuba. Cuba can be a tough place to be and by this point I was really very ready to move on - in this case to Florida!

Meillä osui aika samanlaiset säät Varaderoon viime Tammikuussa! Ihmeen nätiltä ranta tosiaan näytti synkälläkin säällä, vaikka olisihan se ollut kiva päästä aurinkoa ottamaan. Ja yllätyttiin myös paikan rauhallisuudesta, syynä saattoi tosin olla se, ettei asuttiin vähän syrjässä varsinaiselta resorttialueelta. :)
ReplyDeleteMe oltiin siellä siis joulukuussa (postaukset tulee erittäin myöhässä...), käsitin että tämä oli todella harvinainen sääilmiö tälle ajalle. Ehkäpä viime talvi oli kokonaisuudessaan omituista sääilmiötä Varaderossa :D
