Trinidad ja kovan onnen Santa Clara - Trinidad and the Miserable Santa Clara
Trinidadin kaupunki on syystäkin useimpien Kuuban turistien listalla. Trinidad on UNESCOn maailmanperintökohde, koska se on hyvin säilynyt esimerkki Espanjan siirtomaavallan aikaisesta kaupungista. Kellot näyttävät pysähtyneen täällä joskus vuoden 1850 tienoilla. Pääaukea Plaza Mayoria ympäröi lukuisia kauniita pastellinvärisiä rakennuksia ja sivukaduilla näkee mielenkiintoista paikallista arkea. Kaupungissa on kieltämättä paljon kaunista nähtävää, mutta turistien suosiolla on kääntöpuolensa.
Valitettavasti me koimme kaupungissa käyskentelyn aika stressaavaksi kokemukseksi, kun taksien ja retkien kauppaajat olivat hellittämättä kimpussa koko ajan kuin sääskiparvi. Ilmeisesti ratsastusretket ovat erityisen in, sillä niitä kaupattiin koko ajan. Ei se mikään ihme, sillä hevosella kulkeminen joko ratsain tai vankkureilla on myös paikallisille näköjään hyvin tavallinen kulkuneuvo. Me olimme käyneet ratsastusretkellä Viñalesissa, joten täällä päätimme kaupungilla käppäilyn lisäksi käydä junailemassa läheisessä Valle de los Ingeniosissa.
The city of Trinidad is on the bucket list of most tourists in Cuba, and for a good reason. Trinidad is an UNESCO World Heritage site due its well-preserved Spanish colonial architecture. It seems that the clocks have stopped here sometime around 1850. The main square Plaza Mayor is surrounded by lots of charming colourful buildings, whereas on the side streets you see interesting glimpses of the local life. There is no shortage of pretty sights in the town, however there is a downside to it being the tourist favourite.
Unfortunately we felt it was pretty stressing trying to stroll around the town, while being constantly harassed by a herd of very persistent people selling tours, offering taxi rides etc. Apparently the horseback riding trips are very in, as they were being offered at all times. No wonder, as you can quickly see that travelling either on horseback or with a horse cart is a perfectly normal way of getting around for many locals. We had already done horseback riding in Viñales so we decided to go on a train ride Valle de los Ingenios instead.
Junamatka (10 CUC per henkilö) on täysin turistinen, mutta ihan kiva tapa viettää puoli päivää ja nähdä sokeriruokoviljelmiä, jotka aikoinaan tuottivat tälle alueelle niin paljon rikkauksia. Kyseessä on vanha junalinja, jota käytettiin sokeriruokotuotteiden kuljettamiseen, mutta joka on nykyään vain turistien käytössä. Tätä markkinoidaan höyryjunana, mutta käsittääkseni kyseessä on kyllä ihan diesel-moottori, jonka katkut leijailivat huomattavan vahvoina junaan sisälle - monet matkustajat istuivat huivi kasvojensa peittona yrittäen välttää pahimipia katkuja. Juna menee päivittäin klo 9.30 ja palaa takaisin Trinidadiin klo 14 tienoilla kulkien hyvin hitaasti kauniiden maisemien läpi ja pysähtyy matkalla kahdessa paikassa; Manacassa, jossa voidaan käydä haciendalla ja kiivetä näköalatorniin 1 CUC:n maksua vastaan, sekä junan päätepisteessä, jossa oli tarjolla jonkinlainen museo. Meistä museo ei vaikuttanut ollenkaan mielenkiintoiselta eikä siellä ollut mitään muuta tekemistä, joten hengailimme vain odotellen takaisin junaan pääsyä. Manacassa oli kuitenkin ihan kiva kiivetä Pedro Iznagan näköalatorniin ja juoda juuri puristettua sokeriruokomehua.
The train ride (10 CUC per person) is completely touristy but a pretty pleasant way to spend half a day seeing the sugar cane mills that used to bring so much wealth to this area. This train line used to haul sugar cane from the valley to the town but nowadays it is used for tourists only. It is marketed as a steam train but I think it had a diesel engine with very noticeable fumes making their way into the train itself - many passengers were covering their faces with scarves, trying to escape the worst of the strong fumes. The train departs daily at 9.30am and returns to Trinidad around 2pm, winding its way extremely slowly through the beautiful scenery. There are two stops along the way: Manaca, where you can visit a hacienda and climb up to a watchtower for an extra fee of 1 CUC per person, and the final stop where there was some sort of a museum. We didn't find the museum the least bit interesting and there wasn't really anything else to do, so we ended up just hanging out, waiting to get back on the train. However, Manaca was a nice stop with cool views from the watch tower and an opportunity to drink some freshly squeezed sugar cane juice.
Trinidadista jatkoimme matkaa kohti Santa Claraa, joka osoittautui Kuuban reissumme turhimmaksi pysähdyspaikaksi. Suurin syy, miksi halusin siellä käydä, oli Che Guevaran mausoleumi ja monumentti, jossa oli myös museo. Syystä, joka jäi meille täysin tuntemattomaksi, kyseinen käyntikohde oli kiinni. Paikalla oli äärimmäisen luotaantyöntävä vartija konekivääreineen, joka osoitti meille sangen selvästi, että sisälle ei ole tulemista eikä kannata kysellä miksi ei, tai milloin paikka voisi mahdollisesti olla auki. Lisäksi molempina päivinämme tässä kaupungissa satoi vettä kaatamalla, pari muuta mahdollista käyntikohdetta joita etsin opaskirjasta päiviämme täyttämään olivat myös kiinni selittämättömistä syistä ja kaikki löytämämme ruoka oli kieltämättä todella halpaa, mutta laatu ei vastannut sitäkään hintaa. En siis valitettavasti voi kertoa Santa Clarasta mitään hyvää.
From Trinidad we continued our journey to Santa Clara, which turned out to be the most pointless stop on our trip in Cuba. The main reason why I wanted to stop there was to visit Che Guevara mausoleum and monument, where there would also be a museum. For reasons that were left totally unclear to us, the place was closed. There was an extremely unpleasant security guard with a machine gun indicating rather clearly that we could not enter and he didn't exactly offer explanation why it was closed, or any information when it might be open. Apart from that, both days that we had in the town, it was pouring down rain all day, the couple of other sights I had looked up in the hopes of filling our days with something meaningful to do were also closed for no reason, and finally whatever food we managed to find was undeniably cheap, but still not even worth that much money. All in all, unfortunately I cannot say anything good about our time in Santa Clara.
Kuuban reissustamme oli jäljellä enää yksi varsinainen kohde - hartaasti odottamamme Varadero. Siellä sitten saa viimein rentoutua ja nauttia hermolomasta, niinhän?
We only had one actual destination left in Cuba - the long-awaited Varadero. Surely, there we can finally relax and enjoy ourselves, right?
