Kypros Osa 2: Akamasin niemimaa Cyprus Part 2: Akamas Peninsula
Pafos oli hyvä alku Kyproksen-lomallemme, mutta pari yötä siellä
riitti kyllä ihan hyvin. Sieltä ajoimme vuoristokylien läpi kohti
Akamasin niemimaata, jossa on luonnonsuojelualue useine
patikointireitteineen. Matka oli vain noin 45 kilometriä ja tiet
enimmäkseen hyvät, tosin vuoristotiethän ovat aina jossain määrin
mutkittelevia ja välillä tielle oli vuorenjyrkänteeltä pudonneita
valtavia kiviä, joten varovaisuus oli valttia vuoristoteillä. Tämän reissun voi siis helposti halutessaan tehdä päiväretkenä Pafosista.
Paphos was a good start for our Cyprus holiday but a couple of nights there was quite enough. From there we drove through mountain villages towards Akamas peninsula where you find a national park with its many hiking routes. The journey was only about 45 kilometres and for the most part the roads were fine, although the mountain roads will of course always be narrow and windy and in places there were humongous rocks fallen on the road from the side of the mountain so you need to drive carefully. Akamas Peninsula can easily be visited from Paphos as a day trip, if desired.
Useimmat patikointireitit alkavat Baths of Aphrodite-nimiseltä paikalta, jossa jumalatar legendan mukaan kävi kylpemässä. Oletettavasti Afroditen aikaan vesi oli houkuttelevamman näköistä eikä ruskeaa liejua kuten nyt... joka tapauksesta, täältä voi valita parista reitistä, yksi on yllättävää kyllä nimeltään Afroditen polku ja toinen Adoniksen polku. Patikoidessa näkee upeita merimaisemia ja nousee pikkuhiljaa mäntypeitteisiä jyrkänteitä pitkin aina korkeammalle ja korkeammalle. Polku oli suurimman osan aikaa hyvin merkitty, vaikka totta kai me onnistuimme välillä jotenkin poikkeamaan polulta ja meiltä jäi näkemättä polun varrella ollut Pyrgos Tis Rigainas-rauniot. Joka tapauksessa, perille päästiin ja oli ihanaa päästä pitkästä aikaa metsän siimekseen - Maltallahan ei tähän ole mahdollisuutta.
Most hiking routes in the area start from Baths of Aphrodite where the goddess, according to the legend, liked to bathe. Presumably in the times of Aphrodite the water looked more tempting than now that is it pretty much brown sludge... However, you can choose from a couple of routes starting here, one of them unsurprisingly named Aphrodite trail while the other one is called Adonis trail. While hiking you will be amazed by the magnificent views over the sea while climbing higher and higher among the pine trees. Most of the time the trail was well-marked, although it wouldn't be us if we didn't manage to miss the trail at some point... so we ended up not seeing the ruins of Pyrgos Tis Rigainas which was meant to be along the route. Oh well, we found our way back to the parking lot in any case and thoroughly enjoyed the hike in the forest - it's one of the things we miss doing in Malta.
Patikoinnin jälkeen vietimme yön Polis-nimisessä pienessä kaupungissa, josta ei ole paljon raportoitavaa. Nähdäkseni ainoa syy pysähtyä siellä on sen läheisyys Akamasin patikointireiteille. Seuraavana päivänä lähdimme ajamaan kohti Kyproksen jaettua pääkaupunkia, Nicosiaa (tai Lefkosiaa, kuten se kreikaksi tunnetaan!) Ajoimme jälleen vuoristokylien läpi ja pysähdyimme Sterna-nimiselle viinitilalle Kathikaksen kylässä. Siellä maisteltiin (kuski vähemmän kuin apukuski) muutamia hyviä viinejä oliivien ja loukoumin kera ja ostettiin matkaevääksikin pari pulloa.

After the hiking we spent the night in a small town called Polis. Not much to report from there - as far as I can see the only reason to stop there is its proximity to the hiking routes in Akamas Peninsula. The following day we drove to our next stop, the divided capital of Cyprus: Nicosia (or Lefkosia as it is known in Greek)! On the way through the mountain villages we stopped at Sterna Winery in the village of Kathikas. We enjoyed a wine tasting (the driver less so than the co-pilot) with olives and loukoumi and ended up buying a couple of nice wines to go as well.
